Concerts and sports streams in the 1990s demonstrated what was possible; video platforms and lifecasting broadened access in the 2000s; and gaming and social platforms made live video interactive and commonplace in the 2010s.
What counts as live streaming?
Live streaming sends audio or video over the internet as it happens, so viewers can watch without waiting for a complete file to download. The term covers several different milestones: experimental internet video, a live event carried online, a platform adding a live feature, and ordinary users gaining the ability to broadcast. Those are not interchangeable definitions of “the first livestream.”
For video-game audiences, the history matters because live streaming grew into more than a way to transmit gameplay. Platforms and audiences made it a social format: viewers could follow a broadcaster in real time, talk in chat, and build communities around recurring streams.
When did live streaming start?
There is no single uncontested start date. IBM traces the medium to early internet experiments in the early 1990s, when limited bandwidth and video quality made live web broadcasts difficult. It identifies a 1993 Severe Tire Damage concert as one of the earliest successful internet live streams—not definitively the first ever.

IBM also records a 1995 RealNetworks broadcast of a live baseball game using RealPlayer as an early sports-streaming milestone. These examples show why a “first” depends on what is being counted: an experiment, a successful concert broadcast, a sports event, or a service open to users.
Live streaming milestones
| Year | Milestone | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Early 1990s | Early internet streaming experiments; Severe Tire Damage concert in 1993 | Demonstrated that live audio and video could be sent over the internet despite bandwidth and quality limits. IBM describes the concert as one of the earliest successful internet live streams. |
| 1995 | RealNetworks used RealPlayer to broadcast a live baseball game | An early example of live sports reaching audiences over the internet, according to IBM. |
| 2007 | Justin.tv launched as a lifecasting service | It made a person’s ongoing life the broadcast. A University of Edinburgh thesis describes the service as a new form of reality TV. |
| 2008 | YouTube hosted a high-profile global live event featuring creators and performers including will.i.am, Esmée Denters, and Bo Burnham | It showed the platform could host a major live event, before YouTube introduced livestreaming as a user feature. |
| 2011 | YouTube introduced livestreaming as a user feature; Twitch launched as a gaming-focused offshoot of Justin.tv | These were distinct developments: broader user access on YouTube and a service direction centered on gaming at Twitch. |
| October 2012 | Felix Baumgartner’s skydive streamed on YouTube Live | Wowza’s infographic reports 8 million viewers for the event. That is the infographic’s reported figure; it does not name an underlying measurement organization. |
| 2015–2017 | Twitter acquired Periscope in 2015; Facebook Live launched in 2016; Instagram Live arrived in 2017 | Live broadcasting moved further into mobile-first social platforms and everyday social use. |
| 2019–2020 | Apple announced Low-Latency HLS in 2019; Flash support ended in December 2020 | The period reflects continued work on reducing delay and a shift away from a once-important web-video technology. |
Wowza also reported that live-streaming events increased 300% during May–August 2020. This is a vendor infographic’s figure for that reporting period; it does not identify a primary dataset or precise denominator, so it should not be read as a universal measure of audience growth or as a current trend.

How live video delivery changed
From specialist playback to broad device support
Early streams faced tight bandwidth limits, uneven video quality, and device-compatibility problems. Flash and RTMP were important in an earlier phase of web video. Modern delivery commonly uses protocols such as HLS and DASH, which make it practical to deliver live video to a wider range of devices and networks.
Segments, CDNs, and adaptive quality
Rather than waiting for a complete video file, a viewer’s device receives successive pieces of the stream and plays them as they arrive. Content delivery networks (CDNs) distribute those pieces through servers nearer to viewers, helping deliver the same broadcast across large and geographically spread audiences.

Adaptive-bitrate playback can raise or lower video quality as a viewer’s connection changes. This helps smooth playback, but it is not the same goal as minimizing delay. A stream can reach a large audience reliably while still having a noticeable lag; reducing that lag is a separate engineering challenge. Work on low-latency delivery, including Apple’s 2019 Low-Latency HLS announcement, reflects that distinction.
How gaming and social platforms changed the experience
Platforms helped turn live video from a one-way transmission into a participatory format. Chat, reactions, and notifications gave viewers ways to respond while a broadcast was happening. Chat could also connect viewers with one another, not just with the broadcaster—an important part of the community experience that later became closely associated with game streaming.

Justin.tv’s lifecasting and Twitch’s gaming focus illustrate how distinct communities and uses developed around the same underlying medium. Meanwhile, YouTube’s 2008 live event and its 2011 user-livestreaming feature mark different steps: platform-hosted programming first, then a feature for users to broadcast.
Platforms also shaped what happened after a broadcast. Depending on the service and its settings, a stream might disappear, remain available briefly, or be archived. Live streaming’s history is therefore not only a story of video transport; it is also a story about interfaces, participation, and how audiences gathered.

A present-day way to keep a YouTube channel live
For creators who want a pre-recorded video or playlist to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos after the creator adds a YouTube stream key. It is separate from the history above, but reflects one contemporary use of internet live video: keeping a channel on air without leaving a home computer running.
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once, then go live.
- StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It streams uploaded videos to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; there is one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
