Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to list podcast episode files in the order you want them played. That text playlist controls sequence—not endless playback or stream recovery—so a 24/7 setup also needs a repeat strategy, a running encoder, and a plan for interruptions. This guide shows how to prepare the list, check compatibility, connect an encoder to YouTube, and keep rights and operational limits in view.

What the text playlist does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of media paths and presents the files one after another as a virtual concatenated input. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts where the previous one ends. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

The list establishes episode order. It does not, on its own, loop the sequence forever, keep FFmpeg running after a crash, reconnect to YouTube, or manage the viewer-facing broadcast. Treat those as separate jobs: playlist, repeat logic, process supervision, ingest connection, and broadcast lifecycle.

Prepare compatible episode files

The concat demuxer expects the listed files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Episodes with different audio/video stream layouts or incompatible encoding may not concatenate cleanly. Standardize them first if needed; the appropriate conversion settings depend on the source files and YouTube’s current encoder requirements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Duration metadata matters too. Incorrect duration information can cause timestamp problems or artifacts. If a file’s stored duration is known to be wrong, FFmpeg’s concat format supports a duration directive to override it. Consult the format documentation before adding one, and use a reliable duration value.

Create the episode list

  1. Put the episodes you want to stream in a stable directory on the machine that will run FFmpeg. Decide their order before editing the playlist.

  2. Create a plain-text file named, for example, episodes.ffconcat. Make its first line exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading spaces and no byte-order mark. This marker lets FFmpeg recognize the format automatically.

  3. Add one file directive per episode, in playback order. For example:

    ffconcat version 1.0

    file '/media/podcast/episode-002.mp4'
    file '/media/podcast/episode-003.mp4'
  4. Quote or escape paths that contain spaces or special characters. Keep the list’s paths valid from the working environment where FFmpeg will read them.

  5. Check the safe option before using absolute paths or unusual path forms. It defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths. If your workflow requires unsafe paths, FFmpeg has an option to permit them, but do so only when you understand the security implications and trust the playlist and referenced files.

  6. Test the playlist locally with your installed FFmpeg version and inspect the resulting playback before using it as a live input. This is particularly important after changing episode files, their order, or duration information.

Make the sequence repeat and send it to YouTube

A concat playlist is a finite sequence. To keep a channel running continuously, the encoder workflow must repeat that sequence and remain connected to YouTube’s ingest. There is no single universally reliable loop command for arbitrary podcast files: media compatibility, timestamps, FFmpeg version, and output settings can change what works. Validate any command against your actual files and installed build rather than assuming a copied recipe will be seamless.

For a long-running DIY setup, run the encoder on a machine that can stay online, supervise the process so it can be restarted after an exit, and monitor both the process and YouTube’s Live Control Room. A community example uses an Ubuntu VPS, separate text lists, FFmpeg output to YouTube RTMP ingest, and a system service configured to restart; it is an implementation example, not an official YouTube recommendation or a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime: GitHub implementation notes.

Connect the encoder to an eligible YouTube channel

YouTube’s current encoder-streaming help says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Content must also comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check the current eligibility details and channel-specific options in the YouTube live-streaming setup guidance and Live Control Room before configuring the encoder; ingest settings and availability can change.

Use the stream key and ingest information shown for your channel in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a playlist, public script, or shared screenshot. Keep the encoder’s output configuration aligned with YouTube’s current requirements for your channel; the sources here do not establish one bitrate, resolution, or keyframe interval that suits every episode and setup.

Understand stream versus broadcast

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream resource—the incoming stream sent to YouTube—from a liveBroadcast resource—the viewer-facing event. Its documentation describes a 24/7-feed example in which a broadcast can be completed without stopping the continuing feed. This distinction can matter when managing continuous ingest alongside separate events, but it does not mean every channel must create multiple broadcasts. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

Protect episode rights before going live

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent interruption: YouTube says even licensed third-party content can be affected if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg does not recognize the playlist automatically The format marker is not exactly on line one, or the file has leading spaces or a byte-order mark. Make ffconcat version 1.0 the exact first line and save the file as plain text without a byte-order mark.
FFmpeg rejects a listed path A path is invalid, improperly quoted, or rejected by the default safe-path policy. Check spelling, quoting, and the file’s location. The default safe value is 1; only allow unsafe paths if you understand the security implications.
Playback glitches or timestamps jump between episodes Files have mismatched stream structure, incompatible codecs or time bases, or inaccurate duration metadata. Compare the files’ streams, standardize incompatible episodes, and correct known-wrong durations using the concat demuxer’s documented duration support.
The feed stops when an episode list ends or FFmpeg exits The playlist is finite, or no outer repeat and process-restart behavior is in place. Test the repeat workflow with your media and FFmpeg version; supervise the encoder separately and check its logs and YouTube connection.
YouTube interrupts or replaces the live stream A third-party match may have been detected, or the channel or stream may not meet current requirements. Check Live Control Room and YouTube notices, confirm channel eligibility, and review rights and Content ID allowlisting for all episode elements.

Choose between a local encoder, a VPS, and a hosted service

A local computer gives you direct access to files on that machine, but the stream depends on that computer and its network remaining available. A VPS can keep an encoder running while your personal computer is off, but you take on server setup, file transfer, monitoring, and process maintenance. The cited VPS example demonstrates one possible pattern, not a neutral performance comparison or guarantee.

A hosted service moves the always-on process out of your home setup. Compare options based on where your media must be stored, how you will handle restarts and disconnects, the quality and format you need, and the recurring cost. No uptime or performance comparison is established here, so assess the operational fit rather than assuming any approach cannot fail.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free first day.
