To scale a video for a YouTube relaxation stream without distorting it, fit the source inside a 16:9 output frame while preserving its display aspect ratio. For variable-aspect-ratio sources, start with scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2. This fits the image within 1920×1080 but may leave empty space; add padding if you need a consistent full-size canvas. Scaling alone does not make an FFmpeg process reliable or unattended for 24/7 streaming.
Choose how the source should fit the frame
First decide whether the whole image must remain visible or whether filling the frame matters more. A standard landscape YouTube frame is 16:9, but the source may have a different display aspect ratio (DAR). Preserving that ratio avoids stretching faces, scenery, or text.
Fit the entire image, then pad to 16:9
For a source that may have varying dimensions or aspect ratios, this filter fits it inside a maximum 1920×1080 box and makes the result dimensions divisible by two:
scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease:force_divisible_by=2

This does not fill any unused area. To create a fixed 1920×1080 canvas with the image centered, append a pad stage:

The pad color is not specified in this example; choose a background that suits the visual. For a verified 16:9 source, scale=1920:1080 may be sufficient. This is a filter configuration pattern, not a command validated against a particular input, encoder, GPU, or FFmpeg build. Check the output before using it live.
Crop only when losing image content is acceptable
A fit-plus-pad result preserves the whole source but can leave bars or background around it. A crop-to-fill approach can remove those empty areas, but it also cuts off part of the visual. Use cropping only when the composition still works after the edges are removed. FFmpeg’s scale filter documentation describes aspect-ratio options including force_original_aspect_ratio and force_divisible_by; behavior can vary with the FFmpeg build installed on your system.

Inspect the source before choosing dimensions
Do not assume that setting 1920×1080 fixes a distorted source. The problem may be aspect-ratio metadata rather than the pixel dimensions themselves. FFmpeg distinguishes display aspect ratio (DAR) from sample aspect ratio (SAR); older or anamorphic media can use non-square pixels. Its FAQ explains that scaling adjusts SAR to preserve DAR, and describes setsar and setdar for intentional metadata correction: FFmpeg FAQ.
- Use
ffprobeto inspect the input’s dimensions, display aspect ratio, sample aspect ratio, and pixel format. - Choose fit-plus-padding if the entire image must remain visible, or a crop-to-fill treatment if cropping is acceptable.
- Render a representative section and check it visually for stretching, unwanted crop, bars, and playback compatibility.
- Use the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation or help output to confirm filter behavior before relying on it for an unattended stream.
Upscaling a smaller image changes its output dimensions; it does not restore detail that the source never contained. Choose an ingest resolution appropriate to the source and available connection rather than treating 1080p as mandatory.

Match output resolution, codec, bitrate, and frame rate
Scaling controls image dimensions, not the entire YouTube ingest configuration. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following recommended bitrates for H.264 live streams; these are recommendations, not guarantees of image quality or universal minimums.

Do not apply these figures to another codec or frame rate without checking the applicable YouTube table: H.265/HEVC and AV1 recommendations differ. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS streaming, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For SDR, it also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709, and 8-bit depth. Select settings your encoder and upload connection can sustain.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to and through Google’s servers. Live Control Room detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes a live stream into formats for viewers on different devices and networks; that does not remove the need to configure and test the outgoing feed. YouTube’s exact guidance is: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.”
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
A correct scale filter cannot guarantee a stable process, upload connection, or recovery after a failure. Before relying on a stream, YouTube recommends a speed test, a preflight test with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health and messages while live.
- Check that the rendered image has the intended framing and aspect ratio.
- Confirm that the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval agree with your encoder settings and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test the actual audio and moving content, not only a still frame; monitor the stream’s health messages during the test.
- Plan separately for the FFmpeg process stopping, the host restarting, or the internet connection failing. Scaling settings do not provide unattended restart or recovery.
- Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the video and audio. A technically valid live stream is not a substitute for copyright compliance or YouTube policy compliance.
