To rotate prerecorded sermons in a YouTube Live stream, create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio, then use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play an ordered playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. OBS sends the playlist to YouTube; the computer must stay awake, the files must remain accessible, and the stream should be monitored. Plan sessions under 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive and DVR rewind.
What you need
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and remain powered on and awake for the broadcast.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed. The VLC installation must match OBS’s architecture: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, or 32-bit VLC with 32-bit OBS.
- Local sermon recordings in an OBS-supported format, such as MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, or WAV. Keep the files available to the computer throughout the stream.
- A YouTube channel with access to create an encoder-based live stream, plus a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity.
- Permission to stream every recording and all embedded material, including music, performances, photographs, and video clips.
Build a looping sermon playlist in OBS
- Install VLC and OBS. Match the VLC and OBS architectures so OBS can use its VLC source.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a source and select VLC Video. Add the sermon files in the order you want them played. The source supports a playlist of media files.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave the playlist loop setting on so playback restarts after the final file. OBS documents the option as controlling whether the source restarts when it runs out of media files; its documentation says the setting defaults to on.
- Set up the scene. Check that the video fits the canvas as intended and that the audio is audible without clipping. If the recordings have different aspect ratios or audio levels, review each one rather than assuming a single setting will suit all of them.
- Preview the full sequence. Play through the playlist before broadcasting. Check the transitions between sermons, any gaps or slate frames, the opening moment, and whether audio continues correctly from one file to the next.
For a single sermon that should repeat, use OBS’s Media Source instead and enable its Loop option. For multiple recordings, VLC Video is the playlist source.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder-based live stream.
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key as required by the selected connection method.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not share it publicly; if it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using the stream again.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the picture and sound in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the correct playlist is playing before starting the live broadcast.
YouTube advises starting an encoder at least 15 minutes before an event and checking the preview. For a continuous stream, use that time to verify that the intended scene, audio, and playlist are reaching YouTube.
Keep the stream stable and plan its duration
Leave upload headroom
YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate so the broadcast does not consume all available upstream capacity. Avoid saturating the connection with other uploads, and monitor stream quality while live.

Keep the local setup running
Because OBS plays files from the computer, keep the computer awake, preserve access to the media files, and monitor the encoder and the stream. A power, computer, file-access, or internet interruption can stop the local feed; the cited guidance does not promise uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery for an OBS setup.
Stay below YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replayable YouTube archive matters, end the broadcast before it passes 12 hours and start a new scheduled stream. Keep a local recording as a backup if the archive is important.

DVR also has a 12-hour constraint: YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond that point. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind, but they cannot seek back to before the live stream began.
Check rights and monetization before going live
Clear every element in each recording
Make sure the church has the necessary rights to stream each sermon and everything embedded in it, especially music, performances, photographs, and video clips. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. It may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or place a claim on an archived stream. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID.

YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world.” Read the YouTube livestream terms and conditions and its copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting.
Do not assume permission means monetization eligibility
If the channel is monetized, YouTube applies its channel monetization policies to live streams. The policy expects original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission, so having permission to rebroadcast a recording does not by itself establish that the channel qualifies for monetization.

Eligible channels may enable live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. If ads are enabled, do not promise viewers an uninterrupted sermon stream.

DIY baseline: OBS on a computer you already own
OBS is a straightforward starting point if someone can operate the computer and monitor the stream. It keeps playlist playback locally controlled, but the church is responsible for the computer, power, internet connection, and recovery if the feed stops.

Dedicated appliance
YouTube’s verified encoder listing includes the AJA HELO Plus, an H.264 hardware encoder with optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduled prerecorded media streamed directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is an optional appliance, not a requirement for rotating sermon recordings. Check current features, compatibility, and availability with the manufacturer before purchase.
Cloud playback
YouTube’s verified encoder listing also includes Gyre, described as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. A hosted service can suit a church that does not want to operate a local encoder, but check current playlist controls, uptime terms, pricing, and rights workflow directly with the provider. Troubleshooting common problems
