You can reduce the chance that Windows Update interrupts a YouTube stream, but no Windows setting guarantees a local encoder will stay online through a restart. Set active hours around your broadcast, install and restart for pending updates before you go live, and schedule any necessary restart outside the stream. If prerecorded or looped video must keep running while the Windows PC is unavailable, use a separately tested backup path or move playback to the cloud.
What Windows settings can—and cannot—do
Windows active hours are intended to help prevent inconvenient restarts; they are not a lock against every update restart. A scheduled restart can help you choose when an update finishes, but if the computer restarts while a local encoder is sending video, that encoder stops until the PC and streaming software recover. Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance also makes clear that updates cannot be stopped permanently: updates eventually need to be installed.
For a continuous channel, distinguish reducing restart risk from maintaining continuity through a restart. The first can be handled with Windows scheduling. The second requires a feed path that does not depend on the Windows PC, or a tested backup encoder that can take over.
Prepare Windows before the broadcast
Install pending updates and restart ahead of time
- Open Settings > Windows Update and review whether updates are pending.
- When practical, install updates and restart the PC before the broadcast window.
- After the restart, open your encoder, confirm its stream configuration, and verify that the scheduled stream works. This catches startup or sign-in issues before they affect viewers.
Updates that require a restart still need that restart; the useful safeguard is to complete it at a time you choose rather than assume it will never happen during a stream.

Set active hours to match the actual stream schedule
- Windows 11: Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose automatic adjustment or set the hours manually.
- Windows 10: Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.
For a 24/7 stream, set manual active hours to cover as much of the broadcast period as Windows permits, or use automatic adjustment if that better matches your usage. Active hours lower the chance of a restart at an inconvenient time; they do not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Use Pause updates only as a temporary buffer
Windows 11 provides a date-based Pause updates control. Microsoft’s current guidance says updates can be paused for up to 35 days; they resume after the pause expires. Use this for a planned event when necessary, then return to updating and restart at a convenient time. A pause delays updates—it is not a permanent way to turn them off. Check the YouTube stream before leaving it unattended
- Set up early. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before a stream and starting at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Connect the encoder using the stream URL and stream key configured for the event. Keep the key secure; YouTube documents how to reset it if necessary: manage live stream settings.
- Check the preview. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the incoming video appears in the preview before the event begins.
- Verify viewer-facing playback. Check the watch page and monitor audio, picture, and stream health rather than assuming that a connected encoder means viewers can see a healthy feed.
- Keep recovery access available. Make sure whoever is responsible for the stream can access the encoder configuration and Live Control Room if the PC or feed needs attention.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes both software and standalone hardware encoders and recommends preparing a backup encoder for failover. Hardware is an optional architecture choice, not a fix for Windows Update or a guarantee of uptime.
Plan and test a backup encoder
A backup helps only if it can send a usable feed when the primary path stops. Compare the backup’s power, video source, encoder, and network dependencies with the primary: if both rely on the same Windows PC, power supply, capture source, or constrained upload connection, a single failure may affect both.

- Configure the backup feed and establish how it will connect to the YouTube event.
- Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then check whether the YouTube player rolls over to the backup. This is YouTube’s suggested encoder failover test; it does not establish that every setup switches seamlessly.
- Separately test the failure you actually need to survive: arrange a controlled Windows restart and confirm that the backup starts and the viewer-facing playback continues. A cable-loss test alone does not prove restart recovery.
- Restore the primary configuration and confirm that the intended encoder is active before relying on the setup.
Allow enough upload bandwidth
YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For a primary and backup encoder competing on the same connection, its capacity guidance is: primary bitrate + backup bitrate + 20%. A backup using the same limited upstream connection may not provide useful redundancy if both feeds cannot fit within available upload bandwidth. Choose the continuity method that fits the stream

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If your stream PC still runs Windows 10, check its support and security situation and plan an upgrade or another supported arrangement; do not assume it continues receiving free Windows Update security fixes.

Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 documentation describes a “one restart a month” behavior for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, beginning with updates released on and after July 28, 2026. The rollout is gradual; some critical or expedited updates may still install promptly, and Microsoft says updates will not be held indefinitely. Check whether the behavior has reached your device and keep restart planning in place rather than treating it as a promise that the PC will restart only once a month. A continuous live feed, its archive, and its rewind window are separate things. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Its encoder help also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume one 24/7 live event will create an unlimited rewind window or a complete automatic archive. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I stop Windows updates altogether so a stream never restarts?
No. Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely; they can be delayed temporarily, but updates eventually need to be installed.
Does a backup encoder test with the Ethernet cable prove Windows-restart failover?
No. It checks a connection-loss scenario. Test a controlled Windows restart separately and verify that the backup starts and playback continues.
