For a typical stereo nature-sounds stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC or MP3, with YouTube’s recommended settings of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery. If you choose HLS instead, follow its separate encoder and media requirements; its audio options and latency differ.
Choose the settings for your ingestion protocol
There is no single “best audio file format” for every live stream. The relevant choice is the live encoder’s audio codec and settings, together with the protocol you use to send the stream to YouTube. A source recording’s file format is a separate matter.
| Protocol | Audio and media requirements | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP or RTMPS | AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo. For 5.1 surround, AAC only; YouTube recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. | Supports normal, low, and ultra-low latency modes. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. YouTube encoder settings and protocol comparison. |
| HLS | The Live Streaming API ingestion specification calls for audio and video muxed in M2TS, with a single AAC audio track. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as encoder audio options. | HLS sends segments and has higher latency than RTMP; it does not support ultra-low latency. Follow the requirements for your specific encoder and HLS workflow. HLS ingestion specification and YouTube HLS setup. |
| DASH | Documented examples include MP4 with H.264/AAC and WebM with VP8 or VP9 plus Vorbis or Opus. | DASH is a distinct ingestion workflow with its own container and segment requirements, and has higher latency than RTMP. Use it only if your encoder workflow supports it. DASH encoding guide and protocol comparison. |
Recommended choice for a stereo ambience stream
For a conventional stereo stream, choose AAC or MP3 in an RTMP/RTMPS-capable encoder and set the audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. The published YouTube settings establish both codecs as supported; they do not state that MP3 is preferred over AAC. If you have no reason to use another protocol, RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended option.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live input to create output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need to send a compatible, healthy input stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When 5.1 surround is appropriate
If the nature recording is mixed and intended for 5.1 playback, RTMP/RTMPS supports 5.1 only with AAC. Use YouTube’s recommended 48 kHz sample rate and 384 Kbps bitrate for that configuration. Do not apply those 5.1 settings to a standard stereo stream, whose recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
When to choose HLS or DASH instead
HLS
HLS may suit a workflow that specifically requires it, but do not carry RTMP/RTMPS codec assumptions over to HLS. The API ingestion specification describes AAC-only, single-track audio in muxed M2TS; YouTube’s encoder setup help also lists AC3 and EAC3 options. These pages describe different levels of the workflow, so check the exact requirements for the encoder and ingestion path you select. Google’s HLS guidance recommends media segments of one to four seconds and caps them at five seconds. HLS’s segmented delivery has higher latency than RTMP.

DASH
DASH also has its own media combinations and segmentation requirements. Google’s documentation gives MP4 containing H.264 and AAC, and WebM containing VP8 or VP9 with Vorbis or Opus, as examples. It is not simply another name for the RTMP/RTMPS setup; use it only when your encoder supports the documented DASH workflow.
Test the actual continuous setup before relying on it
- Set the encoder for the chosen protocol. Apply the stereo or 5.1 recommendations above only where they match your channel layout and ingestion method.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. Include audio and movement similar to the nature stream you plan to leave running; a static test pattern alone may not expose issues in the real setup.
- Listen on the stream itself. Check that the ambience is audible and consistent, and that the selected channel layout and encoder settings produce the intended result.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Monitor the live stream rather than assuming codec compatibility guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
- Confirm the unattended workflow. Verify that the encoder, network connection, and any machine or service running it can remain active for the intended duration. A codec choice by itself does not guarantee nonstop operation.
YouTube’s official encoder guidance recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Run the stream yourself or in the cloud
DIY with an encoder
With a local encoder, configure its audio codec, sample rate, bitrate, channel layout, and ingestion protocol to match YouTube’s requirements. Keep the streaming computer and network connection running, and monitor the broadcast. The exact menu names depend on the encoder; no particular encoder is specified here.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud, so a home computer and connection do not have to stay on. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
