Those options repeat and pace the file; they do not keep FFmpeg, your computer, or your internet connection running, or guarantee that a dropped broadcast resumes without interruption.
What you need before starting
- A rain video file containing the intended video and audio, or separate audio and video files you have prepared to play together.
- Rights to use the recording and visuals on YouTube, including in a live broadcast.
- A computer with an FFmpeg build that supports the codecs and RTMPS protocol you plan to use.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the selected output bitrate, plus access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
For this guide, the example assumes a local MP4 with both rain visuals and audio. Test the media before broadcasting: listen for a distracting audio seam and watch for an obvious repeated visual. These production checks are recommendations, not a claim that a particular rain file has been tested.
Check your FFmpeg build
Run ffmpeg -version to see the installed version and build configuration. Run ffmpeg -encoders to inspect the available encoders. Confirm that your build has the encoders and RTMPS support required by your intended command; a command can fail if a named encoder or protocol is unavailable in that build.
Set up YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live and configure the stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key provided there. Use the URL exactly as YouTube supplies it and keep the key private: it authorizes publishing to your channel. Do not include a real key in a public script, article, screenshot, or support post.
- Test the upload connection and encoder settings before the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video representative of the actual stream and monitoring stream health during the event.
- For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Use the Live Control Room’s go-live action when the preview is ready.
YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Its developer documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS and documents the valid endpoint on port 443. Use an RTMPS endpoint that YouTube provides and that your FFmpeg build supports.

Choose settings that fit your source and connection
YouTube’s published live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Select the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using YouTube’s current settings guidance and a test of your upload capacity. The host must also be able to encode continuously at the chosen settings.
- Keyframes: Set the GOP to about twice the frame rate to target a two-second interval. For example, at 30 fps,
-g 60is a two-second GOP. At another frame rate, adjust the value rather than copying 60 unchanged. - Bitrate: The example below uses 4500 kbps video as an illustrative value, not as a YouTube recommendation. Check YouTube’s current resolution-and-codec guidance and test that your connection can sustain the output.
- CBR: The example sets
-b:vand-maxrateto the same value as a straightforward starting point. Confirm the resulting stream’s behavior with the encoder and Live Control Room rather than assuming a command alone proves compliance. - Audio: The example encodes AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Check that the output includes the intended audio and that the loop does not introduce a disruptive seam.
Run a looping FFmpeg stream
Replace the example ingest address and key with the server URL and stream key from your Live Control Room. Keep the real key out of files or logs that other people can access.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "rain-loop.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative template, not a tested command or a universal bitrate prescription. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping and -re as reading input at its native frame rate. Together they can make prerecorded media repeat at a live-like pace while the process runs. They do not restart a crashed process or repair a network failure.
Adapt the command safely
- Use the RTMPS server URL exactly as supplied by YouTube, with the stream key appended in the form required by that endpoint. Do not copy the placeholder address literally.
- Change
-g 60if the output is not 30 fps: use approximately two times the chosen frame rate to target YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe interval. - Choose bitrate and resolution for the actual source, encoder capacity, and tested upload connection. The example’s 4500 kbps video value was selected for illustration, not published by YouTube as the correct value for every stream.
- Make sure your FFmpeg build has the
libx264encoder and RTMPS support. If it does not, use an available compatible encoder or install a build with the required support.
When stream copying may help
If the file already uses compatible video and audio codecs and satisfies the ingest requirements, FFmpeg stream copying with -c copy can avoid re-encoding and reduce CPU work. It offers less control over output settings and is not compatible with every source. FFmpeg defines -c copy as copying rather than re-encoding streams; verify your media and the resulting ingest rather than assuming the input will work unchanged.

When audio and video are separate files
Use separate inputs and deliberately arrange their pacing and looping so neither stream ends before the other. Different loop lengths can drift or create audible seams. Another approach is to prepare and test one muxed file containing both tracks before sending it. These are implementation options based on FFmpeg’s input and loop controls, not guarantees about a particular set of files.
Keep the broadcast running and know its limits
The loop continues only while FFmpeg and the host process remain alive and the connection can send data. For unattended operation, use an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor with a restart policy, and monitor FFmpeg logs as well as YouTube’s stream health. A restart can interrupt the broadcast; verify that the new preview and live session are in the expected state.

YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is archive guidance, not a stated maximum ingest duration and not a promise that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be archived automatically. If keeping a recording matters, plan separate local recording or deliberately scheduled shorter broadcasts, and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive.

| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that an encoder or protocol is unavailable | The installed build may not include libx264 or RTMPS support. |
Check ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. Use an available compatible encoder or an FFmpeg build that supports the required encoder and protocol. |
| YouTube does not receive a preview | Check the server URL, key, and RTMPS support. | Copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, use them in the expected format, and confirm that the build supports the RTMPS endpoint. Keep the key private. |
| The stream stops after a while | The FFmpeg process, host, or upload connection may have failed; an input may also have ended or failed. | Inspect FFmpeg logs and the host’s status. Check the input and connection, and configure a supervisor restart policy if unattended operation is needed. After a restart, check the preview and session state rather than assuming continuity. |
| Live Control Room reports poor stream health | The connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the host may not encode reliably at the chosen settings. | Test upload speed and representative media. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the host and connection can sustain, then test again and monitor health. |
| Audio or video is missing, drifts, or loops awkwardly | The input may lack a track, separate inputs may not be paced together, or loop points may be noticeable. | Check the source’s audio and video streams, inspect both output tracks, and test the loop. For separate files, adjust their looping and pacing or prepare a tested muxed file. |
Copyright and monetization considerations
Use rain audio and visuals you created or are authorized to use, and keep records of the source and license. YouTube says copyright restrictions can affect an active live stream. Advertising suitability and paid product placement rules also apply to live broadcasts, so follow any sponsorship disclosure requirements relevant to your stream.

Permission to use a recording and eligibility for YouTube monetization are separate questions. YouTube’s monetization guidance expects original, authentic work and flags content that is generic, repetitive, mass-produced, or reused. Its reused-content review applies channel-wide; permission alone does not settle monetization eligibility. For an ambience stream, consider creating an identifiable original soundscape or presentation rather than republishing minimally changed material. No format guarantees monetization approval.
