You can send a YouTube live stream from a Synology NAS without leaving a separate computer on, but the right setup depends on what you are streaming. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature sends selected camera feeds; it is not documented as a way to loop arbitrary video files. For prerecorded video, you need a compatible NAS-hosted encoder or container, and you must confirm it works on your particular NAS and DSM version before relying on it around the clock.
Choose the route that matches your video source

Synology’s Live Broadcast instructions describe choosing a camera and stream profile and entering a YouTube RTMP destination and key. They do not claim to loop files or playlists. Do not assume that enabling Live Broadcast will turn media in a NAS folder into a continuous video channel.
Check YouTube and NAS prerequisites first
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also lists 16 as the minimum age for live streaming. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility rules for the account that will host the stream.
Check the NAS before choosing an encoder
For a file loop, verify that your exact NAS model and DSM version currently support the container or encoder you plan to use. Then establish whether it can sustain the intended resolution and frame rate. The sources available for this guide do not establish a model-by-model compatibility list or a validated FFmpeg/container setup. Treat a NAS-hosted encoder as a model-specific project, not a universal Synology feature.

Before depending on it, test sustained CPU load and thermal behavior, container restart behavior, and what happens to the stream after an internet interruption or NAS restart. A successful short test does not by itself demonstrate uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room securely

In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions to locate the stream URL and stream key.

Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the NAS encoder’s private configuration. Do not include a working key in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs that others can access. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.

Use the RTMPS destination when the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; its RTMPS guidance explains the encrypted option.

Test with an unlisted stream before making the broadcast public. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators while the NAS encoder is sending video.
Set stream quality to match your source and connection
Use YouTube’s current resolution- and codec-specific settings rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Its encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Check the live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to send.

These are YouTube-published recommendations, not independent performance measurements. The bitrate needed for another resolution, frame rate, or codec may differ. YouTube also recommends keeping 20% upload headroom; its streaming tips note that network interruptions can break a live stream. Measure the available upload capacity at the NAS’s connection and leave room beyond the stream bitrate.
Configure the NAS for a camera broadcast
For a camera feed, use the Synology Live Broadcast workflow that applies to your installed Surveillance Station version. The exact interface may differ by version, so use Synology’s instructions for your package and confirm the camera profile is compatible before broadcasting.

Open Surveillance Station and enable or open Live Broadcast.

Enter the current YouTube RTMP destination and stream key from Live Control Room. Use RTMPS if the interface and configuration support it.

Select the camera and its stream profile. Synology’s version 8 help page says this feature supports H.264 video; do not infer from that page that arbitrary codecs or prerecorded files are supported.

Start broadcasting, then verify the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before publishing to viewers.

Configure a NAS-hosted file loop
For prerecorded media, the general path is files on NAS storage → a supported NAS-hosted encoder/container configured to loop the media → YouTube Live Control Room. This is an architecture, not a verified click-by-click recipe: no specific Synology model, DSM release, container image, or encoder configuration is established here. Select and validate those components for your own hardware before putting the channel on air.

Confirm the encoder can read the files from the NAS volume and send a continuous live output to YouTube.

Set looping and restart behavior deliberately. Confirm whether a container restart resumes the playlist or requires manual intervention.

Use YouTube’s applicable encoder settings for the selected output codec, resolution, frame rate, and audio format.

Run an unlisted test long enough to observe the NAS’s sustained load and confirm that the YouTube preview remains healthy.

Review the rights for every video and audio track you plan to broadcast. Streaming prerecorded content does not remove copyright obligations; confirm that you have the necessary rights and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright policies.
Plan for a stream that has to keep running
A 24/7 setup needs an operating plan, not just a start button. Decide who will notice and handle a failed connection, NAS restart, encoder/container exit, or stream-key change. Check YouTube’s stream-health status and arrange a way to confirm that the NAS and the broadcast are still operating.
Do not plan around one YouTube event remaining connected indefinitely. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its encoder setup help does not promise that a single event can remain connected forever. Plan how you will end and restart broadcast segments and how you will manage resulting archives.

Troubleshoot common failures
