You can use AzuraCast to automate a continuous online radio station, but the AzuraCast documentation cited here does not provide a complete recipe for relaying that station to YouTube. The practical plan is to set up AzuraCast AutoDJ, confirm your YouTube channel can livestream, secure the necessary music rights, and configure a separately verified audio-to-video relay. Do not treat the relay as solved just because the station plays correctly.
What AzuraCast can—and cannot—do for this setup
AzuraCast is free, server-based radio software that can run on a VPS, dedicated server, or another computer. Its AutoDJ schedules media assigned to playlists and can broadcast continuously; files that are present in the media directory but not assigned to a playlist will not be played automatically. AzuraCast also supports live DJ input through compatible Icecast or Shoutcast broadcast software, with Liquidsoap combining station media, playlists, and live input into the station output. These capabilities are described in AzuraCast’s rolling documentation, including “Install AzuraCast,” “Media Management,” “Station Management,” “Streamers & DJs,” and “Streaming Software” (accessed 2026-10-03).
That describes the radio station, not the full YouTube broadcast. AzuraCast’s mount points can expose station audio in different formats and bitrates, but that does not establish that YouTube accepts a particular mount URL or that a video stream has been created. The cited documentation does not specify an end-to-end AzuraCast-to-YouTube relay, audio encoder settings, video composition, or reconnect configuration. You will need a separately verified relay or encoder for those functions; do not assume a mount URL alone is a YouTube-ready live stream.
Check eligibility and music rights before configuring the broadcast
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” page says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. The same page lists limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. These are YouTube’s published operational limits, not estimates of the capacity of your AzuraCast server. The page does not show a publication year, so check its current requirements before launch; eligibility and platform limits can change.

Clear the catalogue for worldwide livestream use
YouTube’s Livestream terms require the creator to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. For every track, establish that the permissions cover the actual composition and sound recording, the territories where the stream will be available, livestream use, and any archive or replay you intend to retain. Which Indian licences apply depends on the catalogue, rights chain, territories, and your specific use; the sources cited here do not determine the licences required for an individual operator.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; continued use can result in interruption or termination. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Keep records of permissions and coordinate allowlisting where applicable.

- Buying a track or having a personal streaming subscription does not, by itself, establish permission for a public 24/7 broadcast.
- A “free” or “royalty-free” label is not proof that a track is cleared for this use or will avoid Content ID matching.
- YouTube describes its Audio Library as a copyright-safe source, but check the individual track’s terms against your planned livestream and archive use.
- YouTube says Creator Music licensed and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. Its cited page reports availability to US creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion beyond the US pending. Recheck current terms and availability; do not rely on Creator Music as a blanket solution for this channel.
Build the AzuraCast station
- Choose where it will run. Install AzuraCast on a VPS, dedicated server, or another suitable computer by following its “Install AzuraCast” documentation. The software itself is free, but that does not make server hosting, storage, maintenance, backups, or a relay free. AzuraCast’s documentation establishes installation on these server types; it does not establish a recommended server size or cost for your catalogue and audience.
- Upload and organize the music. Use AzuraCast’s media management tools to add your files, then create or select playlists and assign the files to them. Confirm the tracks you expect AutoDJ to play are actually assigned to a playlist. Uploading a file to the media directory alone does not schedule it.
- Configure AutoDJ and station output. Set up the station’s playlists and AutoDJ so the station has a continuous programme. AzuraCast’s AutoDJ is designed for 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week broadcasting; that is a software capability, not a guarantee that a particular server, network connection, or YouTube stream will never fail.
- Decide whether DJs will join live. If you want a live presenter to take over from AutoDJ, create a streamer account and connect compatible Icecast or Shoutcast broadcast software to Liquidsoap. AzuraCast’s streaming-software guide recommends Icecast mode for Mixxx. Test the handoff between live input and AutoDJ before relying on it for a scheduled show.
- Check network reachability. If AzuraCast sits behind a reverse proxy, verify that the broadcaster ports required by your chosen DJ software can be reached. AzuraCast warns that some proxy services prevent direct broadcaster connections. A working web dashboard does not prove those separate connections are reachable.
- Test the station independently of YouTube. Confirm playlist playback, transitions, live DJ input if used, and the station output you intend the relay to receive. AzuraCast mount points can serve different formats and bitrates, but the existence of a mount point is not proof that your chosen relay can ingest it.
Plan the separate YouTube relay
Before connecting anything, identify a relay or encoder that can receive your AzuraCast station audio, create a video stream acceptable to YouTube, present the visual you want viewers to see, and recover appropriately after a dropped connection. The AzuraCast material cited above does not identify a particular relay or establish its settings, so verify the full path with the documentation for the relay you choose and YouTube’s current ingest instructions.
- Audio input: verify that the relay can receive the specific station output or mount you have configured. Do not assume every mount format is supported.
- Video: decide what viewers will see, such as a static image or a separately built visual. AzuraCast’s API can provide now-playing and station information that may help power an overlay, but its API documentation is not a guide to producing or encoding video.
- Connection and recovery: test what happens when AzuraCast, the relay, the server network, or YouTube ingest disconnects. The sources cited here do not prescribe reconnect settings or guarantee recovery behavior.
- Monitoring: arrange a way to notice silent audio, a stalled image, or a disconnected stream. Do not infer successful YouTube delivery merely from AutoDJ continuing to play.
Once the relay’s capabilities and current YouTube ingest requirements are confirmed, use YouTube’s encoder workflow, channel verification, and a stream key as directed in YouTube Help. Keep the stream key private, and test the entire chain—including audio, image, metadata, and recovery—before announcing a continuous broadcast. No exact bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or AzuraCast-to-YouTube command can be responsibly specified from the available AzuraCast and YouTube documentation cited here.

Choose a hosting and operating model
A VPS and a dedicated machine can both host AzuraCast, but neither removes the need to operate and protect the system. Compare them on monthly cost, who handles maintenance, backup arrangements, server security, and your ability to monitor service continuity. The sources cited here provide no benchmark values for server sizing, audience capacity, uptime, or hosting prices, so choose based on your actual catalogue, relay, and operational requirements rather than an assumed universal specification.
