You can run a prerecorded nature stream from a spare computer without OBS by using another encoder to play the video, encode it, and send it to YouTube. The computer still has to stay powered on, awake, and connected to the internet. What “without OBS” means
Replacing OBS does not remove the work OBS would have done. A local setup still needs software to read the video, encode it in a format YouTube accepts, and continuously upload it. Your spare computer, its power supply, and your home internet connection remain part of the stream.

YouTube’s workflow is to create or select a live stream, copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder, start sending the feed, and check the preview in Live Control Room. Set up the spare computer and YouTube stream
1. Check channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to livestream. Confirm that live streaming is available for your channel before configuring the encoder.

2. Create or select a live stream
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. The stream key is a credential used by the encoder to send your feed: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
3. Choose and configure a non-OBS encoder
Use an encoder that can read your video source and connect to YouTube using the server URL and key. Follow that encoder’s current documentation for selecting the file, output format, resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, and reconnection behavior. These settings vary by encoder and source; there is no verified universal command or preset to copy here. Check the encoder’s output against YouTube’s current technical guidance rather than guessing values.

4. Start the feed and verify the preview
Start the encoder, then watch the Live Control Room preview to confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and sound before you take the broadcast live. Check from another device after launch as well, so you can catch a frozen picture, missing audio, or a stream that stopped uploading.
5. Prepare for unattended operation
Prevent the spare computer from sleeping while the encoder is running, keep it on stable power, and use a reliable network connection. Disable or schedule disruptive restarts and updates where your operating system allows it, then check the stream periodically. A UPS for the computer and router may help ride through some power interruptions, but actual runtime depends on the equipment and battery capacity.

What a local 24/7 stream depends on
- Power: If the computer shuts down, playback and encoding stop.
- Computer uptime: Sleep, crashes, restarts, or encoder failures can interrupt the feed.
- Home internet: The computer must keep uploading the stream; a home connection outage interrupts delivery.
- Encoder control: You choose and maintain the software and its source, output, and recovery settings.
A spare computer can make sense if you need local control or plan to use inputs and scene changes supported by your chosen encoder. A prerecorded-file loop, by contrast, does not provide a live camera feed or real-time scene switching.
YouTube archives, copyright, and monetization
Do not rely on a 24/7 broadcast as a complete replay
YouTube Help, checked October 3, 2026, says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a separate recording or use shorter segments, and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior before relying on it. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the platform’s limits.

Clear rights for both video and audio
You need the necessary rights for livestreaming footage and audio, and for any later archive. YouTube’s livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that You have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Ambient recordings and background music are not automatically cleared just because they suit a nature stream. Read the YouTube livestream terms and confirm the permissions for each element you use.
A loop does not guarantee monetization eligibility
YouTube’s monetization policy says “inauthentic content,” including repetitive or mass-produced material, is ineligible for monetization and that the policy applies to live streams. A continuous loop is not automatically eligible; make the channel’s programming original and useful, and do not treat runtime alone as evidence of eligibility. Troubleshoot a local stream
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder is running, its server URL and stream key match the selected stream, and the computer is online. If you reset the key, replace the saved key in the encoder.
- The feed stops after a while: Check the computer’s sleep and restart settings, power, network connection, and encoder status. Local streaming depends on all of them remaining available.
- The preview has the wrong picture or no sound: Confirm the selected source and audio tracks in the encoder, then verify the output in Live Control Room before going live.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a separate recording or plan shorter broadcasts if an archive is important.
