How to Run a 24/7 Rain Sounds Stream on YouTube with FFmpeg on Windows

A practical Windows guide to looping rain media with FFmpeg, sending it to YouTube Live, and understanding the testing, rights, archive, and reliability limits of a 24/7 stream.

You can loop rain video and audio files with FFmpeg on a Windows PC, then send the encoded stream to YouTube Live. The basic command is straightforward; keeping a broadcast running around the clock also requires a suitable YouTube channel, media you have rights to use, a stable computer and internet connection, and active monitoring. The example below is a starting point to adapt and test—not a verified, guaranteed 24/7 setup.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  • Rain media you are allowed to use. Use recordings and visuals you made or have permission to stream, archive, and monetize as applicable.
  • A Windows PC with FFmpeg. You will need an FFmpeg build with the encoder and network protocol you intend to use. The command below uses the software H.264 encoder libx264; its availability and performance depend on your build and computer.
  • A stable upstream connection. The stream must be uploaded continuously. Choose settings your connection can sustain with room for ordinary fluctuations.
  • A stream created in YouTube Studio. Studio provides the server URL and stream key used by your encoder.

YouTube recommends preparing the encoder before the event, previewing the stream in Live Control Room, testing the broadcast, and monitoring audio and video quality. Its encoder setup instructions explain how to create a stream and obtain its connection details.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream, then open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values shown in Studio rather than copying an endpoint from an old tutorial.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, tutorial, or source repository.
  4. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the value used by FFmpeg. See YouTube’s live-stream settings help.
  5. Set the broadcast privacy to unlisted while testing if you do not want the test publicly visible. Confirm your title, description, audience settings, and other stream options in Studio before going public.

Prepare the rain files

The example command expects two local files: a video file providing the picture and an audio file providing the rain sound. They can be separate so you can repeat each input independently. If your picture file already contains the intended audio, use a single-input command design instead; the two-input mapping below deliberately selects video from the first file and audio from the second.

  • Use filenames and paths you can quote reliably, such as C:Rain Streamrain-video.mp4.
  • Check both files play correctly before streaming. Listen for abrupt cuts and inspect the visual loop point; -stream_loop -1 repeats a file but does not make its beginning and end seamless.
  • Confirm the audio and picture are yours or that the applicable license permits YouTube livestreaming and any planned replay or monetization. A YouTube rights-management setting does not grant permission to use someone else’s recording.
  • If the two files have different lengths, test several loop transitions in an unlisted stream. Container duration and timestamp behavior can vary, so do not assume separate inputs will loop cleanly together without checking.

Use an FFmpeg loop command

Download or install an FFmpeg build appropriate for your Windows system, and confirm that the executable can be run from Command Prompt or PowerShell. The command below is illustrative. Replace the two media paths and the final output URL with your actual values from YouTube Studio; choose and test the bitrate and encoder for your system and connection.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "rain-video.mp4" -re -stream_loop -1 -i "rain-audio.wav" -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv "rtmp://SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY"

In Windows, you can save an adapted command in a .bat file or paste it into a terminal. Do not put a real stream key in a file you share or expose in a screenshot. The example output is written in the usual RTMP-style shape; use the exact server URL and key provided by Studio, and use RTMPS if your endpoint and FFmpeg build support it.

What the important options do

  • -re reads an input at its native rate, useful when pacing media for a live stream. It is an input option, so it appears before each relevant -i.
  • -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop that input indefinitely. It must also precede the corresponding -i.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 explicitly selects the first video stream from input 0 and the first audio stream from input 1. Change the mapping if your files have different stream contents.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes H.264 video in software. A supported hardware encoder is another option, but its availability, CPU/GPU load, quality, and stability must be evaluated on the actual PC.
  • -r 30 requests 30 frames per second. -g 60 sets a 60-frame keyframe interval, which at 30 fps is two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video rate-control values. The sample’s 4500 kbps is only an example, not a YouTube recommendation or tested setting.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes AAC audio at the sample bitrate and sample rate. YouTube lists 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz as recommended advanced settings for stereo audio.
  • -f flv selects the output container commonly used with RTMP ingest.

Choose settings that match YouTube and your connection

YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt data between the encoder and YouTube. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol and endpoint you select.

Setting Practical choice or YouTube guidance
Protocol Use the endpoint provided in YouTube Studio; prefer RTMPS where supported by the endpoint and your FFmpeg build.
Video codec H.264 is used in the example. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 as supported encoder video codecs.
Frame rate and keyframes The example uses 30 fps and a two-second GOP. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds.
Bitrate YouTube lists 14 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. That is a reference for that resolution and frame rate, not a requirement for every rain scene. Select a setting you can sustain and test the resulting picture and ingest health.
Stereo audio YouTube’s advanced settings guidance recommends 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Verify that your source is actually stereo if that is the intended output.
Rate control YouTube specifies CBR in its encoder guidance. The sample includes maximum-rate and buffer values, but you should confirm behavior with your encoder and test stream rather than assume the sample is optimal.

A mostly static rain scene may look acceptable at a lower video bitrate than a detailed, fast-moving scene, but that is a quality trade-off to evaluate on your own files. Higher resolution and bitrate require more sustained upload bandwidth. Do not select settings solely from a nominal internet plan speed; leave capacity for connection variation and other network use.

Test before making the stream public

  1. Run the adapted command and check that FFmpeg opens both files, finds the mapped streams, and begins sending output without errors.
  2. Wait for the stream preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected video and audio and that the ingest status is healthy.
  3. Open the unlisted watch page on another device or browser. Check that playback starts, the rain audio is audible at a suitable level, the picture appears as intended, and there is no unexpected silence or black screen.
  4. Watch through at least one video and audio loop transition. If the files have different lengths, test enough of the run to establish whether their repeated timing remains acceptable.
  5. After the test, stop the stream cleanly and review any warnings in Live Control Room. Make adjustments before switching to public visibility.

What “24/7” requires on Windows

The loop option repeats media only while FFmpeg remains running. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore an internet connection, prevent Windows from sleeping or restarting for updates, or confirm that YouTube is still receiving a healthy stream. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality; an unattended loop command by itself is not an uptime plan.

  • Configure Windows power settings so the PC does not sleep while plugged in and streaming. Check the behavior of the display separately; turning off a monitor should not be confused with putting the computer to sleep.
  • Where practical, use a reliable wired network connection and make sure the PC has stable power.
  • Plan how you will notice a failed process, lost connection, or YouTube ingest problem. Check Live Control Room regularly; a remote alert or process supervisor may help, but only after you test that specific Windows setup.
  • Test any scheduled restart or watchdog approach before relying on it. The available official guidance does not establish a particular Windows supervisor configuration or guarantee recovery.
  • Keep Windows updates and maintenance in mind. An update or reboot can interrupt a broadcast, so schedule and verify maintenance rather than assuming the PC will run indefinitely.

Copyright, archives, and monetization

Rights to a sound or image depend on the actual recording and license. Confirm that the permission covers live streaming on YouTube and, if relevant, the stream archive, territories, duration, and monetization. Do not infer permission from a file being publicly downloadable or from a rights-management control in YouTube Studio.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its stated automatic-archive guidance applies to streams below that duration; it does not establish that a longer stream will never be archived. If a complete archive matters, plan sessions under 12 hours and confirm current Studio behavior rather than relying on a 24-hour broadcast to produce one full replay.

YouTube’s encoder guide says channels in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a livestream. That does not mean every channel qualifies or that a rain ambience stream will earn advertising revenue. Eligibility and monetization depend on the channel’s status and YouTube’s applicable policies.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg cannot open a file Incorrect path, quoting, file access, or unsupported input Confirm the file exists, quote paths containing spaces, and play each input locally. Check FFmpeg’s error output for the input that failed.
No picture or no sound in YouTube’s preview The input lacks the expected stream or the mapping selects the wrong stream Inspect which streams each file contains and adjust -map. Test the output in Live Control Room before going public.
Connection is refused or the stream does not appear in Studio Wrong or stale server URL/key, endpoint mismatch, unsupported protocol, or network blocking Copy the current connection details from Studio, confirm the chosen protocol is supported by your FFmpeg build, and check local firewall or network restrictions. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
Buffering, dropped frames, or poor ingest health Upload instability, bitrate too high for the connection, or PC resource pressure Check Live Control Room health, reduce output demands if necessary, and test the connection and machine load over time. Avoid assuming a brief successful start proves sustained capacity.
Audio pops, silence, or a noticeable seam Source-file loop point, incompatible timing, or a discontinuity at the repeat Listen to the original loop points and test transitions in an unlisted stream. Replace or edit the source if the discontinuity is in the recording.
The stream stops after hours FFmpeg closed, Windows slept or restarted, network failed, or YouTube ended ingest Check the PC and FFmpeg output, Windows power/update history, network, and Live Control Room. Add a tested monitoring or recovery process; the loop option alone does not restart a failed stream.
There is no complete 24-hour replay The broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition Check Studio’s current archive behavior. If a guaranteed archive is important, use shorter sessions under 12 hours rather than assuming one 24-hour stream will be saved in full.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Windows PC and home connection to carry the stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live.
