The basic design is a Linux system booting on the box, FFmpeg looping a local video file and sending it to YouTube Live, and systemd starting and restarting FFmpeg. This is a device-specific project, not a universal Android TV box modification; first verify Linux support and keep a recovery route before changing the device.
Check Linux support for your exact box before changing it
“Android TV box” does not identify a common boot path. Find the exact model, system-on-chip (SoC), and board revision, then look for a Linux image and boot instructions explicitly supporting that hardware. Do not write a generic image to internal storage just because a similarly named box or another device with the same SoC runs Linux.
Published examples show why this matters. A 2025 Robotica & Management paper documents a TX3 Mini running Linux as a mini-server. A separate H96 Max case report describes trial-and-error booting and inconsistent video acceleration on an RK3328 device. Neither establishes support for your box. If a documented boot-from-microSD or USB option exists, it may be preferable to an internal-storage installation; follow the instructions for your exact revision and retain the manufacturer’s recovery method.
- Confirm the model, SoC, and board revision from the device label or system information.
- Check that the image supports that revision and the required boot method.
- Before relying on it headlessly, confirm Linux detects the network interface, the media storage, and any temperature sensors available on the device.
- Check which FFmpeg build and encoders are available in that distribution. 4K playback support on Android does not prove that Linux can hardware-encode video.
SSH is useful for managing a headless box, and Ethernet is often a practical choice for a fixed streaming host. Neither alone guarantees a stable connection; check that the installed Linux image supports the network hardware and test sustained upload and stream health on the actual network.

Prepare a local loop you have permission to broadcast
Use a video and music file you made or have permission to broadcast publicly, including any intended monetization. Keep the license or permission record with the project. A track being available to watch on YouTube is not permission to rebroadcast it: YouTube’s terms restrict use of others’ content and publicly streaming music from YouTube except where authorized or permitted by the relevant rights holder (YouTube Terms of Service).
A static image or simple visual paired with audio is less demanding to produce than complex animation. Save the finished file on internal storage if there is enough space. If not, an external drive may work, but verify the box’s USB support and power budget, the filesystem, and that it mounts at the same path after reboot. The TX3 Mini paper recommends SSD storage over a memory card for durability and read/write speed; that is the authors’ recommendation for their setup, not a continuous-streaming benchmark or a validated drive recommendation for other boxes.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then use the Stream tab to create or reuse a stream.
- Copy the encoder server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a secret: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to your stream.
- Store the URL and key in a protected configuration readable only by the account that runs FFmpeg. Do not publish a real key in a script repository, screenshot, command example, or log.
- Start sending the feed and check its preview and stream-health information in Live Control Room before selecting Go Live. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes connecting the encoder with the URL and key, checking the preview, and then going live (YouTube: Go live with an encoder).
If a key is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the protected configuration before restarting the service.
Set up FFmpeg to loop the file to YouTube
The FFmpeg command depends on the source file and the FFmpeg build installed on your Linux image. If the file’s codecs and container already suit the YouTube ingest settings you select, stream-copying may avoid unnecessary encoding work. If they do not, re-encode and test the actual encoder available on the box. FFmpeg’s runtime hardware-acceleration options depend on both the installed build and the working driver; a device advertised for high-resolution playback may still lack a usable hardware encoder in Linux (FFmpeg documentation).

Configure the input to loop and read in real time, and send the output to the server URL with the stream key using the protocol and format appropriate to the selected YouTube encoder settings. FFmpeg documents its input, output, and codec options; its protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS (FFmpeg protocols). Keep credentials out of publicly visible command lines and logs: use a protected secret or configuration mechanism supported by the distribution, with restrictive file permissions.
There is no single safe bitrate or encoder profile for every box and video in this setup. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then verify that the box and internet connection sustain the resulting feed. Do not infer upload capacity from a Wi-Fi label or advertised playback resolution. The network interface, router, ISP upload, and observed stream health all matter.

Make the process start at boot and test recovery
Run FFmpeg as a system-level service, such as a systemd unit, so it does not depend on an open SSH session and can start when Linux boots. The exact unit path, user, environment, permissions, and restart policy depend on the distribution and FFmpeg setup. Configure a restart for process exits, then verify the unit rather than assuming a generic example applies to the box. - Start the service and confirm FFmpeg can read the file and send a feed; check the YouTube preview and stream-health panel.
- Let the file complete a loop and confirm playback continues as intended.
- Test a temporary network interruption and confirm what happens when connectivity returns.
- Reboot the box and verify the service starts, the storage is mounted, and the stream returns.
- Inspect the service status and logs after each test, ensuring they do not expose the stream key.
A service manager can restart FFmpeg when the process exits. It cannot repair a missing file, failed storage mount, lost power, broken router or internet connection, invalid key, YouTube broadcast closure, or platform outage. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan for stream-event transitions and confirm the current Live Control Room workflow and archive behavior; a local restart alone does not guarantee one broadcast stays live indefinitely (YouTube encoder guidance).
What published TX3 Mini figures do—and do not—tell you
The 2025 TX3 Mini study reports figures for its own mini-server setup, not a general guarantee for Android TV boxes or a benchmark of continuous video encoding.

The paper’s authors conclude: “Actual power consumption of only 3.5W proves the TX3 Mini is a „green server” device, ideal for 24/7 operation.” That statement describes their TX3 Mini and their reported power figure; it does not show the device’s draw under an encoding workload.
Common problems and what to check
- The box does not boot Linux: Recheck the exact board revision and supported image and boot method. Do not force a similar model’s image onto it; use the documented recovery route if boot is lost.
- FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder or high CPU load: Check the installed FFmpeg build and driver support. Try stream-copying only if the source already matches the selected ingest needs; otherwise test a lower-demand encode the box can sustain.
- The YouTube preview does not appear: Check the server URL, key, output format, network connectivity, and FFmpeg logs. If the key may have been exposed, rotate it rather than continuing to use it.
- The feed stutters or disconnects: Check the stream-health panel, wired or wireless connection, sustained ISP upload, and box load. A nominal network speed does not prove that the route sustains the feed.
- The service starts but cannot find the video: Verify the service user’s file permissions and the media mount path after reboot. Ensure an external drive is mounted before the service starts.
- FFmpeg restarts but the YouTube stream does not resume: Check Live Control Room for the broadcast’s current state. A process restart cannot reopen every ended or closed YouTube event.
