Then use a local looping video, remove unnecessary scene sources and filters, try a supported hardware encoder if x264 is the bottleneck, and lower output resolution or frame rate only if needed. Change one thing at a time and check the result: there is no single setting that guarantees a CPU reduction on every computer.
Find out what is using resources
Before changing settings, note OBS’s CPU use, output resolution and frame rate, selected encoder, and any OBS warning about encoding overload or dropped frames. These symptoms can point to different problems: CPU encoding, GPU rendering, network delivery, or video decoding. A CPU-focused fix will not necessarily help when another part of the system is the bottleneck.
OBS says its requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard can take hardware and network conditions into account. See OBS’s System Requirements and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Use a local looping video when possible
If your fireplace footage is a video file on your computer, add it as an OBS Media Source rather than playing it through a web page. Open the source’s properties, select the video file, and enable Loop. OBS supports common local video formats; its media-source properties also include hardware decoding, which is off by default in the documented settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If playback appears to be contributing to CPU load and your system supports it, test hardware decoding in the Media Source properties. It may shift some decoding work away from the CPU, but the effect depends on the hardware and file. VLC Video is another option for playlists, but it requires VLC to be installed. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
Simplify the scene that is live
Remove sources and filters that the stream does not need. OBS notes that some sources can consume resources even when they are not visible, so hiding a source is not always equivalent to removing it. Keep the active scene collection focused and avoid duplicate full-canvas video layers or unnecessary effects. OBS’s encoding guidance discusses source and scene complexity as performance factors.

Reduce browser-source overhead
A Browser Source is an embedded web browser, not just a lightweight video layer. If the fireplace video is being played from a web page, try using a local Media Source instead. Remove browser overlays you do not need, and keep any retained browser source only as large as its on-screen purpose requires.
This is especially worth checking when the scene has several browser sources or complex overlays. OBS identifies browser sources as potentially resource-intensive; see Browser Source and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

Choose an encoder that fits the bottleneck
If x264 software encoding is driving CPU use, check whether OBS offers a supported hardware encoder for your system. Hardware encoding uses a specialized component in the GPU and is generally recommended by OBS for performance. Availability depends on the operating system, GPU, processor generation, and drivers, so use the encoder choices actually shown in your OBS installation under Settings > Output.
Hardware encoding is not automatically the best choice for every machine or image-quality target. OBS notes that older hardware encoders may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at its default veryfast preset. Compare CPU headroom and the resulting stream quality on your own setup. Details: OBS Hardware Encoding.

Lower output demands only as needed
If simplifying playback and choosing an appropriate encoder are not enough, reduce output resolution or frame rate in small steps and check both resource use and the stream’s appearance. Lower resolution reduces encoder work; if 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS recommends trying 30 fps. A fireplace scene may not need the same motion smoothness as fast gameplay, but the right balance depends on the footage, desired detail, and computer.
Do not treat one resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as universally correct for a fireplace stream. OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide recommends testing output changes rather than assuming one setting fits every system.

Test changes one at a time
- Record a baseline: note CPU use, output resolution and frame rate, encoder, and any OBS overload or dropped-frame indication.
- Change the playback path: use a local Media Source with Loop if the footage is a local file; test hardware decoding only if supported and decoding load appears relevant.
- Trim the scene: remove unneeded sources and filters, including hidden sources that are not part of the intended stream.
- Test the encoder: switch from x264 to an available supported hardware encoder if CPU encoding is the problem, then inspect stream quality.
- Adjust output last: lower resolution or try 30 fps if required, checking the actual stream after each change.
- Compare under the same conditions: let the stream run long enough to assess stability, and compare with the baseline. Do not attribute a change to CPU if the original issue was rendering or network delivery.
Common problems and what to try
- CPU stays high after reducing output resolution: check whether x264 is still selected, and inspect the scene for complex filters, extra sources, or browser overlays.
- OBS reports rendering lag or dropped frames rather than encoding overload: the issue may be GPU rendering or network delivery, not CPU encoding. Check the specific OBS status and troubleshoot that path before changing CPU-related settings.
- Local video playback still appears costly: test the Media Source’s hardware-decoding option if available, then compare with it disabled. Results depend on the computer and the file.
- Hardware encoding looks worse: compare the output quality at the same bitrate. Older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality than x264’s default veryfast preset at that bitrate.
- Lower frame rate or resolution fixes stability but harms the picture: restore the prior setting and try a different single change, such as removing a source or changing the encoder. Keep the best balance that remains stable on your setup.
