You can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream from a VPS by putting FFmpeg in a Docker container, connecting it to YouTube with the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and keeping the container running. Use RTMPS for the connection, choose deliberately whether the video should play once or repeat, and monitor YouTube’s preview and stream health. Docker provides a way to package and run the encoder; YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal Dockerfile, FFmpeg command, or VPS size, so the example below is a starting point to validate with your media and FFmpeg build.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- A VPS with Docker installed, enough sustained outbound bandwidth for your chosen stream, and an outbound firewall path to YouTube.
- A prerecorded video whose codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio you have checked.
- A stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio, with its server URL and stream key available.
Do not publish the stream key or place it in a public repository, container image, screenshot, shell history, or logs. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Prepare the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. If you have not enabled live streaming on the channel before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create a stream or schedule a broadcast. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keep Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview, stream health, and audio after the encoder connects.
For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube’s documented sequence is to start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear, then select Go live in Live Control Room. Connecting the encoder does not by itself mean you have completed that step.
Choose output settings before building the container
The correct FFmpeg approach depends on the file. If its encoded video and audio already meet YouTube’s settings, stream-copying avoids an unnecessary transcode. If they do not, transcode to a supported format and bitrate. A single command cannot safely cover every combination of codecs, frame rates, audio presence, and looping requirements.

YouTube encoder settings to check
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, with constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. AAC or MP3 audio is supported; 5.1 audio is supported only as AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s advanced recommendations include 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps and Rec. 709 for SDR. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular input file or installed FFmpeg build meets them. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Published video bitrate recommendations
The figures below are YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026. They are video bitrate recommendations, not a complete network allowance: leave additional capacity for audio, protocol overhead, and network variation.
| Output | Codec | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p, 60 fps | H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | H.264 | 1 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 1 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
These values help estimate sustained VPS egress, but they do not establish a universal CPU, RAM, or hosting plan. Transcoding can require substantially different compute resources from stream-copying; source format, chosen output, and provider networking also matter. Measure the actual deployment under its intended workload rather than treating a bitrate table as a VPS sizing rule.

Why RTMPS is the default
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary encoder ingest. It carries RTMP through an SSL connection; YouTube’s developer guide says the connection needs a valid RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and the correct server hostname for SNI authentication. A typo in the endpoint or an incorrect TLS/SNI setup can prevent connection. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
YouTube also documents RTMP, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMP is unencrypted and supports H.264; RTMPS is encrypted and supports H.264; HLS supports H.264 and HEVC; DASH supports H.264 and VP9. HLS and DASH are encrypted and can suit some higher-resolution workflows, but segment-based delivery generally has more latency than RTMP/RTMPS. For a straightforward VPS encoder feed, use RTMPS unless your codec or workflow requires another protocol. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
Put the video and credentials in place
- Create a directory on the VPS for the video, for example
/srv/youtube-live/media, and place the file there. Mount the directory read-only into the container where practical so the encoder can read the media without modifying it. - Choose a Docker image that includes the FFmpeg build and codecs your input and output need. Pin a known image version rather than silently pulling a changing tag on every restart.
- Provide the RTMPS destination and stream key at runtime using a secrets mechanism supported by your deployment, or another access-controlled environment mechanism. Do not commit credentials to a Compose file in a public repository or bake them into the image.
- Confirm that the VPS can make outbound connections to the RTMPS endpoint on port 443 and that no firewall or network policy blocks the connection.
These are operational practices for a Docker deployment; YouTube’s encoder documentation describes the destination-side URL, key, and settings, not a Docker configuration.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
The following shell pattern shows the moving parts: mount media read-only, pass the destination and key at runtime, and have FFmpeg read the file. It is not a universal ready-made recipe. Replace the example paths and values, use an image that contains FFmpeg, and adapt the codec and mapping options to the actual file and selected YouTube output. Validate the command with a short private or scheduled test before relying on it.
docker run --rm
--mount type=bind,src=/srv/youtube-live/media,dst=/media,readonly
-e YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL'
-e YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY='YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
ffmpeg -re -i /media/video.mp4
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
In this illustration, -re reads the file at its natural playback rate, and -c:v copy -c:a copy asks FFmpeg to pass through the existing encoded tracks. Stream-copying is appropriate only if the source tracks, output format, timing, and audio are acceptable to YouTube. The exact RTMPS URL structure depends on the server URL YouTube issued; follow that endpoint’s format rather than assuming every account or stream uses the same path. Check how your chosen image and shell expand environment variables in the final argument: some container entrypoints or command wrappers handle this differently. Avoid printing the fully expanded destination if it contains the key.
If the file needs conversion, replace the copy options with an encoding configuration appropriate to the target resolution and frame rate, including CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and audio mapping/encoding if audio is present. For example, an H.264 output generally needs a bitrate set for its selected resolution and frame rate; this changes CPU demand and can require testing for dropped frames. The correct FFmpeg options vary by build and input, so inspect FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s preview rather than assuming that a syntactically valid command produces a healthy stream.

Choose whether playback ends or repeats
The command above reads one file once and then exits when the file ends. That is suitable for a single scheduled broadcast. For continuous programming, design a deliberate loop or playlist workflow and test transitions, timestamps, audio continuity, and the behavior when a file is missing or corrupt. A container restart policy alone is not a playlist: restarting the same one-file command may create interruptions and may not produce the schedule you intend.
Start the broadcast and monitor it
- Start the container and inspect its output for FFmpeg errors. Confirm it is connecting to the intended RTMPS endpoint without exposing the stream key in logs.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the video preview. For a scheduled stream, select Go live after the preview arrives.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and confirm both moving video and audible audio. Also monitor the container process and VPS network/CPU use for the duration you plan to stream.
- To end a one-time broadcast, stop the encoder deliberately and use the Live Control Room controls as applicable. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when ended; that archive behavior does not choose a Docker restart or repeat policy for you.
The YouTube LiveStreams API documents health issues including low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Its reference is at LiveStreams API.

| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No preview or connection timeout | Verify that the stream key and server URL belong to the intended stream, that the endpoint path is exact, and that outbound network access is allowed. For RTMPS, check port 443 and correct TLS/SNI hostname handling. |
| SSL or certificate error | Confirm you are using a real RTMPS endpoint, not an RTMP URL with the wrong protocol, and preserve the hostname required for SNI. Check that the VPS clock and certificate trust store are current if TLS validation still fails. |
| Video appears but health is poor | Check YouTube’s health status for low bitrate or a frame-rate mismatch. Compare sustained output against the bitrate guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; reduce the output target or investigate VPS/network limits if it cannot hold steady. |
| Video is silent | Check whether the input contains an audio stream, whether FFmpeg maps it, and whether the selected output audio codec is supported. A video-only source cannot provide audio unless you intentionally add an audio track. |
| Container exits at the end of the video | This is expected for a single-file, one-pass command. Decide whether the broadcast should end, repeat the file, or advance through a playlist, then implement and test that policy rather than assuming Docker will loop it. |
| Container stays running but YouTube is not receiving a healthy feed | Container uptime is not proof of a valid stream. Check FFmpeg output, the incoming preview, audio, bitrate, and frame rate; confirm the process is sending to the current stream’s URL and key. |
Costs and alternatives
What a self-hosted VPS costs in practice
There is no single supportable VPS price or CPU/RAM recommendation for this setup. The bill depends on the provider and plan, continuous outbound traffic, whether FFmpeg transcodes, the source and output quality, and how much operational reliability you need. Use YouTube’s bitrate values to estimate egress with audio and overhead included, then check the VPS provider’s bandwidth terms and validate the actual workload.

When not to maintain Docker yourself
YouTube’s encoder directory includes Gyre as a managed option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, and AJA HELO Plus as hardware with scheduled prerecorded-media functionality. These are alternatives to operating your own container, not requirements for this Docker method. Evaluate any alternative for supported formats, looping or scheduling, monitoring, maintenance, and total cost before switching.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube prerecorded stream without maintaining a VPS and Docker process, StreamNeo offers a cloud workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
Copyright and channel policy checks
Using a prerecorded file does not exempt a broadcast from YouTube’s copyright or channel policies. Before scheduling, make sure you have rights to the video, music, and other material in the file, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules for the channel. A valid encoder connection only confirms delivery; it does not establish permission to stream the content or guarantee that a channel complies with YouTube’s reused-content or monetization policies.
