You can loop a prerecorded playlist into a continuous YouTube Live feed with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, provided the clips have matching streams and timestamps. Put the clip paths in a text manifest, pass it to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1, and send the encoded output to the RTMP or RTMPS address from YouTube Live Control Room. If the files differ in codecs, time bases, audio or video layout, normalize them first; the concat demuxer joins packets, it does not make incompatible clips match.

What the concat demuxer does—and when to use it

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text manifest and presents its listed files in order as one input, adjusting timestamps so each follows the preceding file. It is useful when you want to join compatible clips without re-encoding. The files must have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Unequal audio and video lengths or inaccurate duration information can create timestamp gaps or transition artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Choose the workflow based on the source files:

  • Matching files: use the concat demuxer and stream copy where the YouTube ingest format and your source codecs allow it, or encode the joined input to a consistent output profile.
  • Different files: transcode each clip to a common profile before streaming, or use a filter-based concat pipeline that converts the differing properties. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer approach from the filter used when re-encoding is needed.

The command below encodes video and audio to H.264 and AAC. That avoids relying on the source codec being accepted by YouTube, but it does not fix every source inconsistency; inspect the files and test transitions first.

Build the ordered playlist manifest

Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in a working folder and list one clip per line in playback order:

Relative paths are convenient when the manifest and clips are together. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. The demuxer applies safe-path checks by default; -safe 0 allows paths the default rejects, so use it only with a manifest and paths you trust. Keep the playlist and media in a controlled folder, and verify each filename before starting an unattended stream.

Prepare and check your media

Confirm stream compatibility

Use ffprobe to inspect each file’s streams, codecs, time bases, resolution, frame rate, pixel format and audio presence. Compare the results across the playlist, not just the first clip. Files with missing audio, differing stream layouts or incompatible codec parameters may fail or behave badly at transitions. For a fixed playlist, preprocessing the clips to one consistent profile is often easier to diagnose than expecting a live command to compensate at each boundary.

Choose an output profile for YouTube

YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and keyframes every two seconds, with four seconds as the maximum interval. Select resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate together. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps at 1080p30; at 1080p60 it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. At 2160p30 (4K), it lists 14 Mbps minimum and 42 Mbps recommended. These values apply to those specific rows; use YouTube’s current table for other output settings.

Set the GOP length in frames to match the chosen frame rate and a two-second keyframe interval: for example, -g 60 at 30 fps. A 60-frame GOP at 60 fps would instead be one second. The command’s -g 60 is therefore only correct for a 30 fps output.

Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as a password that tells the encoder where to send the feed; do not publish it, share it, or put it in a public script or log. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
  3. Use the ingest URL and key together as FFmpeg’s output destination. If YouTube provides an RTMPS endpoint, prefer it for encrypted transport.
  4. Keep YouTube’s automatic resolution and frame-rate detection unless you deliberately configure a custom stream profile and matching key settings.

Start the continuous FFmpeg stream

On a machine with an FFmpeg build that includes the H.264 and AAC encoders, run this illustrative command from the folder containing playlist.txt:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 5000k -maxrate 5000k -bufsize 10000k
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmp://SERVER/STREAM/KEY'

Replace the final URL with the ingest URL and key from YouTube. Treat the sample bitrate and GOP as examples, not universal recommendations: its 5 Mbps video bitrate corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation, and -g 60 yields two seconds only at 30 fps. Change the bitrate, GOP, resolution and frame rate to match your actual output and YouTube’s current settings. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoders and check ffmpeg -h full if an option is unavailable or behaves differently in your version.

-re reads file input at its native rate, which is appropriate when presenting prerecorded content as a live source. It does not resolve mismatched files or make a process resilient to crashes. The example encodes the playlist as H.264/AAC rather than copying source packets, but all inputs still need to be readable and suitable for the chosen output. The concat demuxer’s timestamp and stream-matching requirements remain in force.

Test the broadcast and plan for interruptions

Run an unlisted test first

Before going public, test the playlist as an unlisted stream. Include both audio and visible movement, check the transitions, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health warnings. Confirm that the correct event is receiving the feed and that the audio remains present after a clip changes.

Check the streaming host’s upload capacity

YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom above the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. Check the actual connection used by the machine running FFmpeg; a nominal internet plan speed does not establish that sustained upload capacity. If upload fluctuates or the stream-health page reports problems, lower the output bitrate or move the process to a more reliable connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use supervision and a local recording where needed

For unattended operation, arrange process supervision outside FFmpeg so a crash or host restart can relaunch the stream. FFmpeg itself does not guarantee that a failed process will restart. Keep a local recording if the content matters; YouTube recommends a backup recording. Streaming continuously and preserving an archive are separate goals.

Decide whether one long event or shorter sessions matter more

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. A continuous feed may suit a channel that prioritizes uninterrupted playback; if an archive is important, plan sessions below that threshold and verify the event setup. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
FFmpeg refuses to open a playlist file Incorrect path, quoting or safe-path rejection. Check filenames and working directory. Use relative paths or properly quoted paths. Only use -safe 0 for a trusted manifest.
Failure or glitches at a clip boundary Different streams, codecs or time bases; unequal audio/video lengths; inaccurate durations. Inspect every file with ffprobe, normalize mismatches, and test transitions locally before broadcasting.
No picture or audio at YouTube Wrong event URL or key, unsupported output profile, encoder issue, or missing media stream. Check the FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health, confirm the key belongs to the selected event, and verify that the output uses the intended H.264/AAC profile.
Stream disconnects or health warnings appear Insufficient or unstable upload capacity, or a process/host interruption. Check sustained upload from the streaming host, preserve headroom, and configure external process supervision for recovery.
The playlist ends instead of looping The loop option is missing or positioned incorrectly. Use -stream_loop -1 as an input option before -i playlist.txt.
