A wired Ethernet connection can still show YouTube’s “unstable connection” warning: Ethernet avoids some Wi-Fi problems, but it cannot guarantee that your internet connection has enough steady upload capacity for the stream. Start with the exact Live Control Room message, check what your encoder is sending, then test upload speed against the stream’s total bitrate before changing equipment.
First, confirm where the warning appears
This guide is for a creator sending a live feed from an encoder to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, note the exact stream-health message and the time it appeared. YouTube’s health indicator checks the incoming stream and continues to surface an error while the underlying issue remains; the error display distinguishes critical errors in red from moderate ones in yellow. Follow the instructions attached to the specific message rather than treating every warning as a cable fault. YouTube’s stream-health guidance explains the status display.
If you are watching someone else’s stream and the video buffers, that is a playback issue on the viewer’s side—not the creator’s outgoing-stream health warning. The checks below concern the creator’s encoder-to-YouTube connection.
Check the encoder before blaming the network
Look at the encoder’s live preview or output, error indicators, and CPU load while the warning is present. If your encoder can save a local recording or archive, inspect it too. A choppy, damaged, or silent local output points toward the source or encoder rather than proving an internet problem. Check source quality and encoder errors, update the encoder, and test again. If the local output looks and sounds healthy but YouTube still reports instability, trying another encoder can help isolate whether the current software is involved. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps recommend checking the encoder output and its errors.

Measure upload capacity against the full stream bitrate
Test outbound upload, ideally while the network is being used in conditions representative of your stream. A download-speed result or the advertised speed of your internet plan does not establish how much stable upload capacity is available to the encoder. YouTube recommends enough upload bandwidth for the total stream bitrate and 20% headroom: “The total bitrate that you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend running a speed test to check upload bitrate.
Compare the measured upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate. Include any backup stream that uses the same connection: the relevant comparison is with the total bitrate consuming that upload, not just the main feed. Also check whether other people, devices, or active uploads are competing for capacity. A fast headline download speed cannot rule out a constrained or fluctuating upload.

Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its recommendations include these examples; they are encoder settings guidance, not a guarantee that your own connection can sustain them:
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec and setting combinations. Check the table for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying one of these H.264 examples to a different configuration. YouTube’s Help page does not state a publication year for these figures, so check its current table when configuring a stream.

Reduce the load only if the checks point to capacity
If measured upload is insufficient or unstable, lower the configured bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate, using a combination YouTube recommends for your codec. Then repeat the upload and stream-health checks. If upload testing shows a connection problem, contact your internet service provider. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that a particular router, DNS change, firewall toggle, cable category, or ISP plan will fix this warning.
Ethernet remains YouTube’s recommended connection for live streaming from a computer, but it is not a bandwidth guarantee. YouTube’s filming tips for live streams recommend Ethernet. Inspect the cable and its connections; replace it only if it is loose or visibly damaged. Buying a new cable without evidence of cable damage is not a supported fix for inadequate or unstable upload capacity.
