For a live camera and on-site audio, the practical setup is a camera and audio source feeding a software or hardware encoder, which sends the stream to YouTube Live over a stable internet connection. Before leaving it unattended, test the real stream, clear rights and permissions, and decide who will respond to failures. YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation or specify a complete redundancy plan.
Decide what “24/7” means for the temple
A continuous broadcast can mean two different things, and the distinction matters to viewers as well as to the setup:
- Live darshan: a camera sends what is happening at the temple now, with live audio if used. This requires a camera, an encoder, a working uplink, and an operator or a tested unattended operating plan.
- Looped programming: previously recorded video is played repeatedly as a live stream. It is not a live view of the temple. Label it honestly so viewers do not mistake a recording for a current ceremony or darshan.
If you record or replay ceremonies, confirm that the temple permits the recording and broadcast, that the people shown may be filmed and streamed, and that the recording can be used in this way. The rules and permissions can depend on the site, activity, people, and content; a general YouTube setup guide cannot determine which India-specific or temple-specific permissions apply.
What you need for an encoder-based temple broadcast
An encoder workflow suits a fixed production that uses external camera or audio equipment. The signal path is:

Camera and audio source → software or hardware encoder → secure YouTube ingest → YouTube Live.
- Video source: a camera positioned for the approved view. Check the image in the actual lighting conditions, including at night or during aarti if those are part of the broadcast.
- Audio source: a microphone or audio feed appropriate to the space. Check speech, devotional music, and ambient sound at the receiving end; do not rely on the camera’s local monitor alone.
- Encoder: software on a computer or a hardware encoder that accepts the chosen video and audio inputs and can send a YouTube-compatible stream. YouTube documents both encoder workflows and external production hardware; it does not endorse a particular model.
- Network and power: a reliable upload connection and power for the camera, encoder, router, and any audio equipment. A backup plan is a separate operational decision, not something YouTube’s setup procedure supplies automatically.
How do I set up a 24/7 live stream on YouTube?
1. Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility early
Use a verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s eligibility and setup guidance, so do not leave activation until the intended launch. YouTube supports several ways to go live, including mobile, webcam, encoder, and console; for an external temple camera-and-audio setup, choose the encoder workflow.
2. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the live-streaming setup in Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream you plan to use. If the stream is scheduled, check that the schedule, title, visibility, and intended audience are correct before the test.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s corresponding ingest and key fields.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes it as the encoder’s stream password/address: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
Studio labels and layout can change. Confirm that the encoder is connected to the intended channel and stream before starting a public broadcast.

3. Choose the encoder output and secure ingest
YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP, for ingest. Use the codec and bitrate appropriate to the output quality you select and to the tested upload connection. YouTube transcodes live streams into playback formats, so the encoder’s output settings should follow YouTube’s current encoder recommendations rather than an assumed universal bitrate.
Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm that the encoder is sending both the intended video and audio sources, and that its output resolution and frame rate match what the equipment and connection can sustain. Higher output settings are not useful if they cause dropped frames or unstable delivery.
How to test the connection before going public
Measure upload capacity and leave room for variation
Measure outbound upload speed at the temple rather than treating download speed as proof that streaming will work. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom. For example, if the encoder’s total video-plus-audio bitrate is B, plan for available upload capacity of roughly B ÷ 0.8 or more, not merely B. Shared connections can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, so test at the location and under the network conditions expected during operation.

Run a representative test stream
- Set up the encoder well before the intended launch. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting it up at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Use an unlisted test if appropriate for the channel, and test the actual camera, audio, encoder, network path, and planned output settings.
- Include representative movement and sound. A static, silent test may not reveal trouble that appears during a moving procession, busy ceremony, or louder audio.
- Inspect the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Look and listen for missing audio, poor framing, freezes, buffering, dropped frames, or an unexpected delay.
- Check that the stream appears where intended on the channel and watch pages, then play it on a mobile device as well as the production monitor.
- Only after the test passes should you make the intended stream public or rely on it for a scheduled broadcast.
Clear copyright and permissions before streaming
Do not assume that devotional or temple-related material is automatically cleared for a YouTube broadcast. The channel needs the necessary rights for the actual content and use: the live performance, the recording, and the public broadcast may raise different permissions questions. Check music, recordings, video clips, television feeds, and any other third-party material with the relevant rights holders.
YouTube says that all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including another copyrighted live broadcast. If a match is detected, YouTube may show a placeholder and warn the creator; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also end a stream.

YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary worldwide rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable laws and regulations. Ask the temple administration, rights holders, and relevant local authorities about site-specific requirements, camera placement, processions, and the repertoire. YouTube’s general guidance does not settle which permissions apply to a particular temple in India.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan session length and replays instead of assuming an archive
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement is not a guarantee that one continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will produce a complete replay. Test the channel’s planned session length, scheduling, restart process, and replay workflow in Studio before depending on them.
If a continuous session needs to be stopped and restarted, decide who is responsible, how the encoder reconnects, and how viewers will find the next session. Do not promise viewers a permanent or complete replay until the channel has verified how its own configuration handles the intended session.

Make unattended operation recoverable
A stream that starts successfully is not yet an unattended operating plan. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing encoder failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet connection and confirm that the player switches to the backup. Treat this as a useful check, not proof that every failure will be covered or that the stream cannot be interrupted.
- Test a backup encoder path and document how to switch to it.
- Assign a person to monitor the stream and respond to a lost feed, silent audio, poor picture, or rights warning.
- Decide how the system will be restarted after an encoder, computer, camera, or network failure.
- Separately investigate power continuity and an alternative network connection for the temple. The YouTube guidance described here does not provide a complete 24/7 redundancy architecture or service-level guarantee.
- Keep access to the channel and stream key with authorized operators, and know how to reset the key if it is compromised.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder cannot start a stream. | Live streaming is not enabled, the channel is ineligible, or the stream URL or key is incorrect. | Check channel verification and restrictions, allow for first-time enablement, then copy the current URL and key from the intended Studio stream into the encoder. |
| The preview is absent or the stream does not appear as expected. | The encoder may not be connected to the selected stream, or the stream’s visibility or schedule may not match the plan. | Confirm the selected stream in Studio, verify encoder connection status, and check the visibility and schedule before going public. |
| Playback buffers, freezes, or loses quality. | The total bitrate may exceed available upload capacity; a shared connection may be reducing the encoder’s share. | Measure upload at the site during representative conditions, preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, and lower output settings if the connection cannot sustain them. |
| There is video but no sound, or the sound is distorted. | The wrong input may be selected, audio may not be reaching the encoder, or levels may be unsuitable. | Check the selected audio source and cabling, then repeat a test with representative sound and listen to the Live Control Room preview or receiving playback. |
| The stream is interrupted after third-party music or video appears. | A Content ID match or other rights issue may have triggered a warning or interruption. | Remove uncleared material, contact the rights holder, and request Content ID allowlisting where applicable. Do not assume a licence alone prevents a match-related interruption. |
| The planned continuous broadcast has no complete replay. | The session may have run longer than the under-12-hour automatic-archive guidance covers. | Verify the channel’s intended session and replay workflow in Studio; do not rely on a complete archive for a longer continuous session without testing it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the temple’s plan is to loop uploaded recordings rather than broadcast a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or make a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It is not a live camera service, so it does not provide live darshan from the temple. The stream keeps going without a computer or home connection left on; uploaded quality is streamed as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
