Run FFmpeg on an always-on cloud VM, loop an authorized video file, and send one continuous RTMPS stream to YouTube. On limited bandwidth, choose a modest resolution and bitrate that the VM can reliably sustain, then verify YouTube’s stream health and the provider’s data-transfer charges before leaving it live.
What you need to plan first
A cloud-hosted stream still depends on three things working continuously: the source video, the process that encodes and sends it, and the VM’s outbound network connection. A prerecorded loop can live on the VM; a camera or other real-time source must remain available to the encoder. Use only media you have permission to broadcast.
- Bandwidth: enough sustained outbound capacity for the encoded stream, with headroom for variation and audio/protocol overhead.
- Compute: a VM capable of encoding your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. Pre-encoding can reduce live encoding work, but not the bandwidth needed to upload the stream.
- Operations: persistent process supervision, logs, health checks, alerts and a tested restart or recovery plan. These depend on your operating system and cloud provider; YouTube does not supply them for your VM.
- Cost and policy: VM runtime, storage, outbound transfer and any monitoring charges. Check the provider’s current transfer allowance, overage pricing and rules for sustained network use.
Choose a stream quality that fits the connection
YouTube Help’s H.264 recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03, provide a useful starting point. They are encoder-setting recommendations—not a promise that a particular VM can sustain the rate or that viewers will receive the same playback quality.
| Output | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube lists separate ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; use the guidance for the codec you actually send. On a constrained link, lower resolution or frame rate rather than setting a bitrate at the edge of the connection’s nominal capacity. Test representative footage on the actual VM network.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate monthly transfer before you commit
A planning estimate for decimal gigabytes is daily transfer in GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 10.8. At 3 Mbps, that works out to about 32.4 GB a day or 972 GB over 30 days; at 6 Mbps, about 64.8 GB a day. These are arithmetic estimates before protocol overhead or bitrate variation, not provider quotes. Confirm whether outbound traffic to YouTube counts toward your allowance and what happens when that allowance is exceeded.
Configure YouTube and the cloud VM
- Prepare the VM and source. Choose a cloud VM that can handle the selected encoding workload and place the authorized video where FFmpeg can read it. Install FFmpeg and set up persistent process supervision and monitoring for your chosen environment.
- Get the live ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the stream and retrieve its current ingestion endpoint and stream key. Keep the key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP; see YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Set encoding parameters. Start with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose the codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to fit both YouTube’s guidance and the VM’s reliable outbound capacity. YouTube transcodes an incoming stream into multiple playback formats, but that does not reduce the VM’s upload bandwidth.
- Run a short test. Use a private or unlisted test and check the ingest preview and stream-health indicators before a public continuous broadcast. Include representative motion and audio, and check whether your source’s audio and video durations loop as intended.
- Operate and monitor. Watch for disconnects, encoding overload and unexpected transfer use. Test process restart behavior and alerts in the cloud environment; their setup and reliability are deployment-specific.
Illustrative FFmpeg loop command
FFmpeg documents -re for reading a file at its native rate when output needs live pacing, and its protocol documentation covers RTMP and RTMPS. The following is a conceptual starting shape, not a tested production command. Replace the placeholders with the current YouTube ingest details and adapt it to your file, installed FFmpeg build and required output settings.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-video.mp4
-c:v libx264 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv 'rtmps://<youtube-ingest-endpoint>/<stream-key>'
At 30 fps, -g 60 corresponds to a two-second GOP; change it if your output frame rate differs. The sample does not specify output resolution, frame rate, pixel format or every audio option. Set those to suit the input and current YouTube requirements. Protect the stream key from shell history, logs and public repositories. Validate looping behavior, particularly when audio and video have different durations; a command that works for one file layout may not be safe for another. FFmpeg’s documentation is available at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html and its protocol reference at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-protocols.html. AWS also documents an illustrative FFmpeg file-looping pattern for AWS IVS at Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software; that example’s destination is IVS, not YouTube, so do not copy its destination settings unchanged.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube reports unstable stream health or drops the feed
The outbound rate may exceed what the VM can sustain, or network variation may be consuming your headroom. Reduce the bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then test again. Check provider network policies and monitor the connection during a representative run.

The stream connects but encoding overloads the VM
The VM may not have enough compute capacity for live encoding at the selected settings. Reduce the encoding workload or use a VM capable of handling it. Pre-encoding the source may reduce live compute demands, but the outgoing stream still consumes transfer at its configured bitrate.
The loop has missing, mismatched or cut-off audio
Check the input’s audio and video durations and verify loop behavior in a test broadcast. The correct FFmpeg options depend on the file layout; do not assume the illustrative command handles every source.

The process stops and does not resume
FFmpeg alone does not provide a complete 24/7 operations setup. Configure and test a persistent supervisor, restart behavior, logs and alerts for your VM and operating system. A restart may require checking the YouTube ingest state as well.
Transfer charges exceed expectations
Compare actual outbound usage with the bitrate-based estimate and inspect the provider’s current billing rules, included allowance and overage terms. Transfer accounting and sustained-use policies vary by provider.
