How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Mac mini With the Display Off

Use macOS display and Energy settings to turn off a Mac mini’s screen while its YouTube encoder keeps streaming. Includes a temporary Terminal option, setup checks, and archive caveats.

On a desktop Mac mini, set a display-off timer in System Settings > Lock Screen, then enable System Settings > Energy > Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. The display can turn off while the Mac and its encoder continue running. Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power use.

Set up YouTube and your encoder first

  1. Enable YouTube Live. Confirm that live streaming is enabled for your channel. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the day you plan to start.
  2. Create or select an encoder stream. With the Mac mini connected to a display, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder, following that encoder’s setup steps. Keep the key private: it allows an encoder to send a feed to your channel. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide and stream settings guidance.
  3. Choose settings for your connection. YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video with RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use a resolution and bitrate that your stable upload connection can sustain; there is no single upload-speed requirement that fits every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Check its encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the rate applicable to your chosen output.
  4. Preview and test before relying on the stream. Start a test broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators, and verify representative audio and video. YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and monitoring stream quality; successful configuration alone does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Turn off the display without putting the Mac to sleep

Use the desktop settings for a persistent setup

  1. Open System Settings > Lock Screen.
  2. Set the preferred interval for Turn display off on power adapter when inactive.
  3. Open System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off.
  4. Leave the encoder running and let the display turn off. Verify in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the broadcast remains live after the screen goes dark.

Display sleep and computer sleep are separate controls on desktop Macs. Menu labels or available options can vary with macOS version and Mac configuration; if you do not see the setting, consult Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide for your installed version. Apple cautions that delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption.

Use a temporary Terminal hold instead

For a one-off stream, open Terminal and run caffeinate -i. Keep that Terminal process running for the duration of the broadcast; stop it when finished. The -i option prevents idle system sleep. Do not add -d if you want the display to turn off, because that option prevents display sleep. This command does not protect against power loss, network failure, encoder crashes, updates, or interruptions from YouTube. See the macOS caffeinate command reference.

Plan for unattended streaming and recordings

  • Check the whole chain. For a long broadcast, have a practical way to check that the Mac, encoder, internet connection, and YouTube stream remain healthy. The sleep settings keep the display from being the reason the Mac sleeps; they do not provide an uptime guarantee.
  • Do not rely on one 24-hour automatic archive. YouTube states that all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish what happens to every stream lasting longer than 12 hours, so do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved in full. If a complete recording matters, plan appropriately segmented broadcasts or independent local capture and storage. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
  • Use material you have rights to stream. A working encoder and valid stream key do not grant rights to music, gameplay footage, or other content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before leaving a broadcast unattended.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What to check
The display turns off and the stream stops. Check that Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off is enabled in System Settings > Energy. If using caffeinate, confirm the Terminal process is still running and that you did not use -d.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. Confirm live streaming is enabled, then check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key. Reset the key if it may have been exposed, and update the encoder if you reset it.
The preview or stream health is poor. Test the connection’s stable upload capacity, then lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the feed is sustainable. Use CBR and a keyframe interval of two seconds where possible; do not exceed four seconds.
The stream stops despite the Mac staying awake. Check the encoder, internet connection, and Live Control Room rather than assuming the display setting caused it. Neither the Energy setting nor caffeinate recovers a crashed app, lost connection, or power outage.
A full-length recording is missing. Do not assume YouTube automatically archives a broadcast of 12 hours or more. Use shorter segments or a separate recording plan if preserving the complete stream is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
