You can loop recorded church services into a continuous YouTube Live broadcast from an Amazon Lightsail VPS by preparing a video playlist, configuring an encoder such as FFmpeg to send it to YouTube’s ingest URL with a stream key, and keeping that encoder process supervised. The VPS removes dependence on a church computer and its internet connection, but it does not remove the need to test encoding capacity, monitor the stream, budget outbound data, or clear rights to every recording and song.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Start setup well before your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and its encoder setup guide.
- An Amazon Lightsail Linux instance with enough measured CPU, memory, disk space, and monthly transfer for your actual media and output settings.
- Recorded service files that the VPS can read, plus an encoder installed on the server. This guide describes the workflow rather than prescribing an untested FFmpeg command or service configuration.
- The YouTube stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in configuration files, screenshots, or logs. Reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Permission to rebroadcast all content in the recordings, including music, performances, readings, and other third-party material.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
YouTube supplies an ingest destination and key; the encoder running on Lightsail reads your media and pushes the resulting live feed to YouTube. For an encoder workflow, select or create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room, copy its URL and key into the encoder, and start the encoder. Configure the VPS to send outbound traffic only to the services it needs. Lightsail’s instance firewall filters inbound public-IP traffic and allows outbound traffic, so this streaming design does not require opening inbound video ports. For administration, restrict SSH (TCP 22) to your administrator IP range where practical. Review IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately if IPv6 is enabled. See Lightsail firewall behavior and its firewall rule examples.
Configure YouTube and the encoder
- Enable live streaming early. Verify channel eligibility and complete activation; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and key from the stream settings. Keep the key private and insert it into the encoder’s destination settings without exposing it in public logs or shared files.
- Choose output settings for the source footage. YouTube recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 5 Mbps at 1080p30, 6 Mbps at 1080p60, 3 Mbps at 720p30, and 3 Mbps at 480p30. Match the row to the resolution and frame rate you actually select rather than treating one rate as universal. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
- Check real upload capacity and stream health. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and testing with a speed test. For a 5 Mbps video stream plus audio, plan for more than 6 Mbps of stable upload capacity; that is arithmetic applying YouTube’s headroom recommendation, not a separate YouTube benchmark. Monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during a realistic test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test the full recording workflow. Send the intended files at the intended quality and frame rate, verify both audio and picture in YouTube, and watch server CPU, memory, disk use, process restarts, and outgoing network traffic. Do not assume a nominal vCPU count proves that an instance can encode your material reliably.
Loop recordings and keep the process running
Arrange the files in the order you want viewers to see them, then configure the encoder to play that sequence repeatedly and send a continuous output to YouTube. Before relying on it, verify that the playlist reaches its end and starts over cleanly, that audio stays synchronized, and that each file uses settings your encoder can handle. A service manager or other process supervisor can be configured to restart an encoder after it exits, while logs and alerts help an operator detect repeated failures. The exact playlist syntax, restart policy, and monitoring configuration depend on the operating system and encoder; no one command or restart interval is established here as a tested recipe. Validate your chosen configuration with the encoder’s documentation and a sustained test rather than treating a process restart as proof that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
A VPS avoids reliance on the church building’s computer, power, and internet connection, but still needs operational oversight. Confirm in YouTube that the event appears on the channel and watch pages, and check stream health after startup and during service. If the stream disconnects, inspect encoder logs, server resource use, network transfer, and Live Control Room messages before restarting or changing settings.

Choose a Lightsail size and estimate transfer use
Lightsail bundles virtual-server compute, RAM, SSD storage, and a monthly data-transfer allowance; plans are billed hourly up to a monthly price ceiling. AWS’s current Linux/Unix IPv4 bundle listing includes a Nano example at $5 USD per month with 2 vCPUs, 0.5 GB memory, 20 GB storage, and 1 TB transfer. This is an example listing, not evidence that the instance can encode a particular church service. Measure the selected encoder and media workload, and compare regional plan allowances before choosing a size. See Lightsail bundle details and the instance FAQ.
Estimate transfer from the actual total bitrate and time online: bitrate in bits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 gives decimal gigabytes. At 5 Mbps, video alone uses about 54 GB per day (5,000,000 × 86,400 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000). Audio, protocol overhead, restarts, and other server traffic increase the total. AWS counts both inbound and outbound data toward the allowance, but says excess charges apply to outbound transfer; inbound excess is not charged. Allowances and regional details vary, and the allowance resets monthly, so compare your estimate with the current plan and region and check current overage pricing before launch. See Lightsail’s transfer terms.

If you need a stable public address for SSH administration or DNS, a Lightsail static IPv4 stays the same when the instance is stopped and started, unlike its default public IPv4. AWS says there is no charge while a static IP remains attached to an instance. It does not keep the encoder process alive; process supervision is a separate configuration task. See Lightsail static IP guidance.
Decide between one continuous stream and shorter sessions
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish how a single uninterrupted 24/7 session will be archived or organized as a replay. If viewers need dependable replays, validate current YouTube behavior and consider shorter scheduled live sessions or uploading the recordings separately. Shorter sessions also make it easier to organize each service as its own event; a single continuous stream favors an always-on channel format. YouTube recommends checking that the event appears on channel and watch pages and monitoring audio and video quality. See YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive note and its live-stream monitoring tips.

Clear rights before rebroadcasting church recordings
A recording being available to the church does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast every element on YouTube. Review rights for each service and each included song, performance, reading, and recording. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a detected match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continuing matched content can lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed third-party content may require the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. If a stream is archived, it may receive Content ID claims after it ends. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to hold the necessary worldwide rights, including relevant music licensing rights. See YouTube’s live copyright guidance and its livestream terms.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the feed | Live streaming is not activated, the key or ingest URL is wrong, or the key was reset. | Check channel eligibility and activation, then copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room. Replace any exposed key. |
| Unstable stream or poor stream health | Insufficient stable upload capacity, bitrate too close to the available bandwidth, or server resource limits. | Confirm total bitrate, retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, and review Live Control Room messages plus CPU, memory, and network use. |
| Audio or video stops when a file ends | The playlist or loop behavior is not configured as intended, or the next file cannot be read or decoded. | Test the complete sequence and loop with the actual files; inspect encoder logs and verify file access and compatible output settings. |
| The stream ends after an encoder failure | The encoder process exited and no supervisor restarted it, or it repeatedly fails under load. | Review logs and resource use, configure and test process supervision, and verify the feed recovers in Live Control Room. |
| A stream is interrupted after a song or recording | YouTube detected a third-party match or the rights holder’s Content ID settings affected the feed. | Review rights for the matched material and contact the rights owner about the channel’s allowlist status; do not assume a license automatically prevents an interruption. |
| Monthly transfer approaches the plan allowance | Continuous outbound video traffic, audio, overhead, or other instance traffic is higher than estimated. | Recalculate from actual total bitrate and hours streamed, then compare with the plan’s current regional allowance and overage terms. |
