Plasmified Zango is an optional Act 3 boss in a secret room in the western Wormways. Entering the room and approaching him starts the fight; the Needle Phial is not required to trigger it or earn the Journal kill. Bring the Phial if you want to extract Plasmified Blood, which permanently reduces his maximum health. Zango does not directly award the Plasmium Gland: that comes from the separate Advanced Alchemy wish.
Plasmified Zango location on map: How to get to it
Look for a secret room in the western Wormways during Act 3. A marked map on the Hollow Knight Wiki shows the encounter location. For rough orientation, a secondary encounter guide places the room southwest in the Wormways, west of Bonegrave’s southern entrance, with the nearest bench north of the region. Treat that as route guidance rather than an official map label.
Zango appears as a corpse in this room during earlier acts. In Act 3, the Plasmium-transformed Wormways cause him to reanimate and become hostile.
How to trigger the Plasmified Zango fight
Enter the room and approach Zango; he shouts and initiates the encounter. The encounter account does not list a Wish or Needolin performance as a trigger, and you do not need a Needle Phial simply to start the fight or earn the Journal kill.

What to bring: Needle Phial or conventional damage
Your choice depends on whether you want Plasmified Blood as well as the kill. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s encounter page reports that Zango has 1,000 HP and regenerates 25 HP every 0.75 seconds when he is not taking damage. Keeping up pressure matters if you fight him conventionally.
| Approach | What you need | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needle Phial extraction | A fully charged Needle Phial stab; the Phial is associated with Zylotol’s relevant wish. | Extracts Plasmified Blood and reduces Zango’s maximum HP by 250 per successful extraction. The reduction persists after leaving and returning. | Players who want samples and are willing to attempt charged stabs. |
| Conventional damage | Enough sustained damage and, if useful, ranged tools. | Defeats him without extracting blood, but inactivity lets him regenerate. | Players focused on the Journal kill or who do not have the Phial. |
The encounter page names Silkshot, Sting Shard, and Tacks among ranged options, and suggests high attack-rate tools. These are guide recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular loadout will suit your build or playstyle.

How the fight changes as Zango loses health
Zango’s attacks and movement escalate as his health falls: Plasmium blob volleys begin below 950 HP, become more frequent and travel farther at lower thresholds, and his walking movement changes below 500 HP. Since a successful Phial extraction cuts his maximum HP rather than merely dealing damage, it is a way to make lasting progress even if you leave and return. Four successful extractions account for 1,000 HP of maximum-health reduction, based on the encounter page’s 250-HP figure per extraction.
What does Plasmified Zango reward?
The encounter table records one direct reward for defeating Zango: a Hunter’s Journal kill entry. The other practical interaction is extracting Plasmified Blood with the Needle Phial. The Plasmium Gland is not a direct boss drop.

Advanced Alchemy and the Plasmium Gland
Advanced Alchemy is a separate Act 3 wish from Zylotol, available after completing Alchemist’s Assistant. It requires delivering ten Plasmified Blood samples and rewards the Plasmium Gland. The Gland allows Plasmium Phial recharge at a bench. In other words, the boss fight can help you gather the quest material, but defeating Zango alone does not grant the Gland.

The encounter page describes him as “Husk of an alchemist’s assistant granted false life by Plasmium.” The in-game Hunter’s Journal text reproduced on the Hollow Knight Wiki reads: “He carelessly seeded these caves with that cursed substance… His final fate seems fair reward for those efforts, yet I feel some sympathy. It is an alluring power.”
