You can run a YouTube livestream from an old Windows laptop, but only if it can encode your particular video or scene reliably and stay awake, powered, and connected. Start with a low-workload setup, test it under the conditions you intend to use, and plan for interruptions; basic software compatibility is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules.
- Live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the process.
- An encoder such as OBS, a stable internet connection with upload headroom, and the YouTube stream URL and private stream key.
- A power adapter and Windows power settings configured to prevent the laptop from sleeping during the stream.
OBS supports Windows 10 and 11 and lists a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements. OBS cautions that meeting its minimum requirements does not guarantee that a particular workload will run well. A laptop described only as “old” cannot be judged without knowing its hardware and condition. OBS system requirements.
Set up the stream on your laptop
1. Keep the production light
Install OBS or another compatible encoder and create the simplest scene that meets your needs. On a limited machine, avoid unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, extra cameras, and high output resolution or frame rate. These choices reduce workload, but they cannot guarantee a particular laptop will manage a long session. OBS identifies encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors in performance. See OBS encoding performance troubleshooting.
2. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create or select the live event and choose the encoder option.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into the matching fields in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview to appear. Check that the intended picture and sound are present before making the event live. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a stream with an encoder.
3. Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion with H.264, H.265, and AV1. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Set the encoder to a codec YouTube accepts, and consult the codec-specific bitrate table rather than applying H.264 figures to H.265 or AV1.

For H.264, YouTube’s documented bitrate table gives these values:

These are encoder-ingest figures, not a guarantee that your internet plan or Wi-Fi can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. Test at the location and over the connection you will actually use, and leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate. 4. Keep Windows awake while plugged in
Connect the power adapter and check Windows sleep timers as well as the action for closing the lid. Many laptops sleep when the lid closes; plugging in does not necessarily disable that behavior. In Windows 11, review the sleep timeout under Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Set the plugged-in sleep behavior deliberately, and confirm what happens when the lid is closed before leaving the stream unattended. Windows settings can vary by device. Test before leaving the stream unattended
A short successful start does not prove an old laptop can run overnight. Test the actual content, settings, power arrangement, and network connection you intend to use, and monitor the encoder and YouTube’s stream health during the test.

- Play representative motion and sound. Confirm that movement is smooth enough for your content and that audio is present, correctly balanced, and not clipping.
- Watch OBS for encoding or rendering warnings and YouTube’s Live Control Room for stream-health alerts. If the encoder cannot keep up, simplify the scene or lower output settings.
- Open the public watch page on another device or in a separate browser session. Confirm the stream is visible and that viewers can hear it.
- If recording a local archive, check that the file is being created and growing. YouTube also recommends checking access through channel or watch pages and mobile.
- Supervise a representative test before trusting the setup overnight. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preparation, monitoring, and testing.
Plan for interruptions and archives
A laptop stream depends on the machine, power, network, encoder, and YouTube session all continuing to work. Windows updates, sleep, a power interruption, network loss, or an encoder failure can end the broadcast. The sources cited here support testing and monitoring; they do not establish that one broadcast can remain uninterrupted indefinitely.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule is not a statement that 12 hours is the universal maximum session length, nor does it establish that a single 24-hour session will work for every account. For a schedule that needs to keep running, plan how you will notice a failure and restart or divide the broadcast into segments. Confirm the current behavior for your event in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshooting an old-laptop stream

Costs and the alternative to keeping a laptop running
A do-it-yourself setup uses hardware you already own, but it requires the laptop to remain powered, awake, connected, and capable of encoding the chosen scene. Power use and the cost of replacing or maintaining an old machine vary, so there is no single meaningful cost estimate for every reader.
