How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Study Music Stream with FFmpeg on a VPS

A practical guide to looping study music from FFmpeg on a VPS, connecting to YouTube Live over RTMPS, choosing encoder settings, and monitoring a continuous broadcast.

You can run a continuous study-music stream by sending a looping media file from FFmpeg on a VPS to a YouTube Live ingest endpoint. The VPS keeps the encoder online when your own computer is off, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: the process, host network, YouTube ingest, broadcast setup, and media can all fail independently. The practical workflow is to clear the music rights, configure YouTube Live, choose settings the VPS can sustain, run FFmpeg at real-time pace, supervise it, and monitor YouTube’s received-stream health.

Before you start: media, rights, and infrastructure

Prepare a source that can loop cleanly

Use a video file that already contains the intended audio and visuals, or prepare synchronized audio and video inputs and test their loop behavior before relying on them. Check that every file decodes, that the audio does not have an unintended gap or abrupt level change at the loop point, and that the visual does not reveal a jarring transition. FFmpeg input-loop behavior and options can vary by input type and installed build, so verify the syntax against the documentation for your version.

Confirm permission for the whole use

Make sure the music license explicitly covers livestreaming on YouTube and, if you plan to leave the stream archive available or monetize it, those uses too. Buying a track or providing attribution does not by itself establish those rights. This guide does not verify any particular music catalog or license. Keep your permission records with the source files.

Choose a VPS for sustained work, not a headline specification

There is no established universal minimum VPS plan for this workflow. Compare sustained CPU capacity for your chosen encoder and quality, outbound bandwidth and traffic limits, network reliability, region, support, and total cost. Run a speed test from the VPS and test at the intended settings: a provider’s advertised plan does not prove that its real upstream can sustain your stream.

Configure the YouTube broadcast and protect the key

  1. Set up the live event. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure or schedule the broadcast and make sure the channel’s live setup is ready. An encoder connection and a public broadcast are separate parts of the workflow; do not assume reconnecting FFmpeg creates or resumes the broadcast you intend.
  2. Copy the ingest details from the account. Get the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Choose RTMPS when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted delivery. The account’s current values are authoritative; avoid hardcoding an ingest address copied from an old tutorial.
  3. Keep the key secret. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, repository, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  4. Check URL and key format for your encoder. Some workflows accept the URL and key separately; others use a combined destination in the form STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the exact format expected by your FFmpeg output and the values provided by YouTube.

YouTube’s Live API distinguishes an encoder-facing liveStream configuration from liveBroadcast events. That separation matters for a 24/7 feed: verify the event’s lifecycle and how your channel is configured for continuous operation rather than treating an encoder process as the broadcast itself.

Choose FFmpeg settings that match the stream and VPS

Pick a protocol and compatible codecs

For a standard SDR study stream, RTMPS is the straightforward choice when supported by the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current ingest details. YouTube’s encoder guidance identifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance also notes that HLS can be considered for HDR or capabilities not supported over RTMP(S); protocol and codec compatibility should be checked for the specific workflow. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into viewer formats.

Set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes together

  • Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s current resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate guidance rather than reusing one target for every quality. Select a target that the VPS can sustain over its real outbound connection.
  • Audio bitrate and sample rate: For stereo, YouTube’s current guidance lists 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; for 5.1, it lists 384 kbps and 48 kHz. Use the values appropriate to your audio layout.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Calculate the GOP length from the frame rate: for example, a two-second interval means twice the chosen frames per second, not a fixed GOP number for every stream.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. A static or gently animated study visual may not need a high frame rate; choose based on the content and the current bitrate guidance.

Resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, audio bitrate, encoder load, and available upload capacity are a single trade-off. Reduce the target quality if the VPS cannot sustain the selected output, then test again. The correct settings are not established by a generic VPS size or by a single universal command.

Build and test an FFmpeg command

FFmpeg syntax depends on the inputs and build, so treat this as a command structure to adapt and test rather than a guaranteed drop-in configuration. Set the variables from your chosen media files, the bitrate range for the selected quality, the frame rate, the matching GOP calculation, and the exact YouTube ingest details. Keep the key in a protected environment variable or secret store, not directly in a shared script.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "$MEDIA_FILE"
  -c:v libx264 -b:v "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -minrate "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -maxrate "$VIDEO_BITRATE" -bufsize "$VIDEO_BUFFER"
  -r "$FRAME_RATE" -g "$GOP_FRAMES" -keyint_min "$GOP_FRAMES" -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a "$AUDIO_BITRATE" -ar "$AUDIO_SAMPLE_RATE"
  -f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"

This example assumes one looping media file with audio and video, an FFmpeg build with the libx264 encoder, and an ingest destination accepted in combined URL/key form. Confirm the form YouTube and your encoder require; if the build lacks libx264, use a compatible installed encoder and check its settings. The example’s buffer and looping behavior also need validation for your source and build. Do not copy a bitrate or GOP value from a different resolution or frame rate.

  1. Test the inputs locally or on the VPS first. Confirm that FFmpeg reads the file, loops it as intended, and produces continuous audio and video without drift or premature exit.
  2. Run a private or otherwise non-public ingest test where available. Use representative audio and movement, and check the received signal and stream-health messages in Live Control Room before committing to a public continuous broadcast.
  3. Start at a sustainable quality. Increase quality only after confirming the VPS’s sustained upload and encoder capacity can handle it without dropped or unstable output.
  4. Check the stream from the viewer side. A running FFmpeg process only shows that the local process is active; it does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that viewers see the intended broadcast.

YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its page does not state a publication date, so treat the settings as current platform guidance and recheck the official instructions and your Live Control Room before launch.

Keep the encoder running and monitor the broadcast

Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor or service manager configured to start at boot and restart after a process failure. This can recover the encoder process; it cannot repair a host outage, restore a broken network, guarantee YouTube ingest, or ensure the broadcast resumes in the intended state. Keep process supervision and YouTube broadcast monitoring as separate checks.

  • Watch the service or process status for exits and restart loops.
  • Monitor Live Control Room stream health and messages to confirm what YouTube is receiving.
  • Check that the public broadcast remains in the expected state after reconnects.
  • Review logs carefully and avoid logging the destination in a way that exposes the stream key.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
No incoming signal in Live Control Room Wrong URL, protocol, or key; mismatched URL/key format Compare the destination and key with the current Live Control Room values. If intending RTMPS, use the RTMPS address and the format accepted by the FFmpeg output.
TLS or SSL error RTMP/RTMPS protocol or server mismatch Verify that both protocol and server are RTMPS. If the error persists and the URL setup calls for it, follow YouTube’s guidance to specify port 443.
Unstable or degraded stream Target quality exceeds sustained VPS upload or encoding capacity Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate as appropriate to the selected quality, retest with representative content, and inspect YouTube’s health messages.
FFmpeg runs but viewers see a problem Local process health differs from YouTube’s received-stream health Use Live Control Room feedback and a viewer-side check; do not rely on process status alone.
FFmpeg reconnects but the broadcast is wrong or absent Encoder stream and broadcast event lifecycle are configured separately Review the stream settings and the broadcast event state, then confirm the channel’s intended continuous-broadcast setup.
Media stops, drifts, or has a loop gap Input-loop behavior, unsupported media, or source timing issue Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and build, validate the source’s decode and loop behavior, and test the entire loop before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining a VPS and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is for uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts, and it streams to YouTube only.

Costs and operating trade-offs

A VPS workflow combines the hosting plan’s recurring charge, any applicable outbound-traffic costs, and the time spent configuring and monitoring the encoder. No VPS provider or minimum plan is established here, so compare current plan limits and total cost directly with providers before committing. FFmpeg itself is software; the workflow does not require dedicated capture hardware.

StreamNeo charges by slot and term; the stream features are the same across terms, with 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and team support.
