For most press conferences, the right streaming setup depends on whether reporters need to ask questions live and how much production control the event needs. Zoom can send a meeting or webinar to YouTube or another supported destination; for a more controlled video chain, a production encoder such as OBS can feed an RTMP stream into eligible Zoom Events or Zoom Webinars Plus configurations. Those are different workflows with different account requirements. If the broadcast itself is one-way, arrange a separate way for reporters to ask questions.
Choose the workflow around the press conference
Decide how reporters will participate before choosing software. Zoom’s documented production broadcast setup is one-way: attendees cannot communicate back through that configuration. Zoom-to-YouTube viewers can comment on YouTube, but they do not interact directly with webinar attendees. If questions are part of the event, plan a moderator-managed chat, a separate call-in line, or another return channel.
| Workflow | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom meeting or webinar streamed to YouTube | An event organized in Zoom where YouTube is the public viewing destination. | Check account and host eligibility, enable YouTube livestreaming, and account for Zoom’s approximately 20-second delay for this workflow. Zoom’s YouTube streaming guidance |
| Zoom meeting or webinar sent to a custom streaming destination | A destination that accepts a stream URL and key, such as a compatible website or platform. | Enable the relevant Zoom feature and configure the destination URL, stream key, and public page URL. Requirements depend on the account and host. Zoom’s custom-platform guidance |
| Encoder feed into Zoom Events or Zoom Webinars Plus | A production team using a camera or switcher and a separate encoder, with the event hosted in an eligible Zoom product. | The incoming RTMP feature described by Zoom supports up to 1920×1080 at 30 fps. Confirm current product eligibility and feature requirements before the event. Zoom’s incoming RTMP guidance |
| OBS or another encoder directly to YouTube | A production team that wants to send its program feed directly to YouTube rather than route it through Zoom. | You need an encoder, a YouTube stream key, a suitable computer, and a separate plan for audience questions if the stream is one-way. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers supported protocols, codecs, and bitrate choices. YouTube’s live encoder settings |
Check eligibility and destination before event day
Zoom-to-YouTube or custom destination
Zoom’s streaming routes depend on account settings, host permissions, product license, and the destination. Confirm the exact meeting or webinar host account can use the feature, enable livestreaming in advance, and verify that YouTube Live is activated for the channel if you plan to use YouTube. For a custom platform, obtain its ingest URL and stream key and enter the public page URL Zoom should share.
Incoming RTMP to Zoom Events or Webinars Plus
Zoom’s incoming RTMP instructions apply to the Zoom Events and Zoom Webinars Plus configurations described in its support page; this is not a universal setting for every Zoom meeting or webinar. Zoom recommends a wired internet connection where possible, a pre-event test, and a backup connection or method. It also cautions against running the RTMP software encoder on the same device used to connect to the webinar. Verify current account and product requirements with Zoom’s RTMP instructions.

OBS and computer capacity
OBS publishes operating-system and graphics requirements, but meeting those compatibility requirements does not guarantee that a computer can encode a particular scene at the selected resolution and frame rate. The load varies with the encoder, output settings, and scene complexity. Its published requirements page is dated August 25, 2021, so check the current guidance and test your actual setup: OBS system requirements.
Build and connect the production signal chain
Match capture hardware to the camera or switcher
If the production source is a camera or switcher rather than a webcam, identify its output connector first. Zoom’s example setup uses HDMI or SDI capture into a streaming computer, with a separate monitoring computer and headphones. These are examples, not universal requirements: choose a capture device compatible with the actual output and production chain. An HDMI source calls for an HDMI capture device; an SDI source needs an SDI-compatible path. See Zoom’s production broadcast guidance.

Keep the program feed and interaction path clear
Decide where microphones, slides, cameras, and remote speakers enter the program, and how a producer will monitor the outgoing picture and sound. If the public stream cannot carry two-way interaction, appoint someone to collect questions from the separate channel, screen them, and relay them to the moderator or speaker. Avoid assuming comments on the public destination automatically appear inside the Zoom event.
Configure an encoder stream to YouTube
- Enable YouTube Live ahead of time. Confirm the channel is eligible and live streaming is activated before the press conference; do not make the first activation attempt on event day.
- Create the livestream in YouTube Studio. Use the scheduled event’s stream settings to get its stream key and ingest information. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screen shares.
- Set the encoder’s output. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264 among supported options, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. Prefer RTMPS where available. Choose bitrate for the selected resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current table rather than a remembered value: YouTube encoder settings.
- Send the intended program. In OBS or the chosen encoder, select the correct video source, audio inputs, resolution, and frame rate; enter the stream key through the service’s stream settings, then start the encoder. Exact menu labels can change between application versions.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm the expected video and audio reach YouTube before making the event public. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event and monitoring stream health during transmission.
- Run a complete rehearsal. Reproduce the actual signal chain, speakers, slides, motion, and question workflow. Confirm the public destination, delay expectations, moderation roles, and backup connection or method.
Test the event, not just the software
A successful connection test only proves that a signal can arrive; it does not prove the event will be intelligible or manageable. Rehearse with the actual audio sources, speakers, camera movement, slides, and network path. Check for clipped or missing microphones, echo from competing audio routes, unreadable slides, incorrect framing, and a mismatch between what the moderator sees and what the public receives. YouTube specifically recommends realistic audio-and-motion tests and ongoing stream-health monitoring.

For Zoom’s production broadcast requirements, the cited support page gives 1.8 Mbps up/down for 1080p in that configuration. Treat that number as specific to Zoom’s stated setup, not a universal bandwidth target for every encoder or stream. Prefer a wired connection for production, and have a backup method ready for an internet or encoder failure.
Troubleshoot common press-conference stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The livestream option is missing in Zoom. | The account, host license, administrator setting, or selected Zoom product may not meet the feature requirements. | Check the specific Zoom route’s account and host requirements, enable the feature in account settings, and confirm the correct host is using it. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. | Live streaming may not be activated, the stream key or destination details may be incorrect, or the encoder output may not match supported settings. | Verify YouTube Live activation, recheck the stream key and ingest configuration, and compare output settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| The public broadcast appears behind the Zoom event. | Some delay is part of the Zoom-to-YouTube workflow. | Zoom describes an approximate 20-second delay for its YouTube livestream route. Do not use that figure as a latency guarantee for other configurations; account for it when planning questions and cues. |
| Video stutters, drops, or the encoder struggles. | Network instability or insufficient computer capacity for the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene can overload the path. | Test the real scene and settings, prefer wired networking, reduce output demands if needed, and prepare a backup connection or method. OBS notes that compatibility alone does not ensure a system can stream a particular workload. |
| Reporters can watch but cannot ask questions. | The chosen production broadcast path may be one-way, or public-platform comments may not feed into the Zoom event. | Use a planned separate call-in, moderated question channel, or other return route; assign someone to relay selected questions. |
| Audio or image quality fails only during the rehearsal or live event. | A basic connection test did not include the event’s real movement, microphone mix, or operating conditions. | Repeat the test with representative speakers, camera movement, and audio, then monitor stream health throughout the event. |

Protect the event and its recording
Use material you are authorized to stream, and check that music, footage, slides, and other assets are cleared for the intended live and replay use. A press conference can still include third-party material in its opening, background, or presentation. Keep the stream key private, limit who can access the production accounts, and decide in advance who can end the stream or switch to a backup feed. YouTube’s stream-health and encoder guidance is at YouTube Help.
