Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYou can loop a local video on YouTube Live with OBS: add it as a Media Source, enable Loop, then stream at YouTube’s recommended 4K60 H.264 settings. But OBS opening successfully does not prove a used PC can encode 4K at 60 frames per second. Check the machine under the actual workload and verify sustained upload capacity before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What you need before setting up the loop
- A used desktop that can sustain the chosen encoder, 2160p resolution, 60 fps, and your OBS scene together.
- A local video file to repeat, plus any audio intended to accompany it.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream live, with live streaming activated.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream and recommended headroom.
There is no universal minimum used-PC specification supported by the available guidance. CPU generation, Windows compatibility, or OBS launching are not enough to establish 4K60 capability. OBS says compatible system requirements do not guarantee that a system can stream or record at a desired setting; encoding demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test the exact setup you intend to run.
Activate YouTube Live before the planned stream
- Verify the channel and check its status. YouTube’s live-stream tips say a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- Enable live streaming early. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until broadcast day.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and retrieve its stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Confirm the stream appears in Live Control Room. Preview it there and run a test before the intended long session.
YouTube’s live setup and eligibility guidance is at YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Set YouTube’s 4K60 encoder values
For 2160p60 using H.264, YouTube Help recommends a bitrate of 35 Mbps. Use the following encoder settings as the starting point for a standard SDR stream:

| Setting | Value or guidance |
|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMPS is recommended for encrypted transport; YouTube also supports RTMP. |
| Video codec | H.264 for the 35 Mbps recommendation below. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1, but the cited bitrate range for those codecs is different. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 2160p (4K), 60 fps. |
| Video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 2160p60. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) recommended. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit. |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps; AAC or MP3 is accepted for RTMP/RTMPS. |
Do not apply the 35 Mbps H.264 recommendation to every codec: YouTube lists a 10–40 Mbps minimum-to-maximum range for AV1/HEVC at 2160p60. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different output formats for viewers. At 4K, YouTube does not offer the low-latency option; the stream uses normal latency. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Help: Live encoder settings and audio guidance.
In OBS, add the YouTube server and stream key in the streaming settings, selecting RTMPS when available. Match the output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval to the values above. The exact OBS menu labels can vary by version; use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to help identify suitable settings, then check the resulting output rather than assuming the wizard has validated a long 4K60 run.

Add the video and make it repeat
- In OBS, add a source with + in the Sources panel and choose Media Source.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then browse to the local video file.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. This makes OBS restart the file when playback reaches its end.
- Check the preview for the intended framing and confirm that the clip’s audio behaves as expected at the end and when it restarts.
- Use Use hardware decoding when available if the setting is available and supported by the hardware. It can use the GPU to decode the source video; it is separate from encoding the outgoing stream.
OBS lists common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. A file loading successfully does not demonstrate that the PC can encode and send the complete 4K60 stream without interruption. OBS’s Media Source options are documented at OBS Project: Media Sources.
Check the used PC with the real 4K60 workload
- Inspect the encoder options. Check which video encoders and codecs are actually available in OBS on that computer. Compare the available encoder with the codec you plan to send; do not assume a GPU has a suitable encoder merely because it can display 4K video.
- Configure the intended scene and output. Use the actual clip, audio, overlays, and other sources you plan to keep in the live scene. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoder.
- Run a realistic test. Let the setup run long enough to reveal sustained performance issues, and use footage with motion and audio similar to the planned broadcast. A short desktop preview or an OBS launch test is not an adequate substitute.
- Watch OBS and YouTube together. Check OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection indicator, and check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages.
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion, checking stream health, and monitoring messages. If OBS dropped frames climb while its connection indicator is yellow or red, OBS identifies an unstable connection to the streaming server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. That points to the network path, not necessarily a weak encoder. If the stream instead struggles while the connection remains stable, reassess the PC, encoder, and scene load. OBS’s system guidance is at OBS Project: System Requirements; YouTube’s live setup and health guidance is at YouTube Help: Set up a live stream.

Measure upload capacity at the streaming location
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% room beyond the bitrate of the primary plus backup stream. For a single 35 Mbps H.264 stream with no backup stream, that guidance implies planning for at least 42 Mbps of available upload capacity (35 Mbps × 1.2), before allowing for variation or other devices sharing the connection. If you configure a backup stream, include its bitrate when calculating the recommended headroom.
- Test actual upload speed and stability where and when the desktop will stream; an advertised download speed does not establish outbound capacity.
- Check whether other people or devices use the connection during the planned broadcast. Shared-network use can reduce the capacity available to the PC.
- A wired Ethernet connection is a reasonable option for connecting the desktop to the router, but a cable cannot fix insufficient ISP upload capacity. The benefit depends on the router, ISP, and network conditions.
No India-wide upload-speed figure or ISP plan can establish whether a particular household connection is suitable: availability and performance depend on the location and service. YouTube’s bandwidth guidance is at YouTube Help: Live encoder settings and bandwidth.

Copyright and the suitability of the looped video
Using a video as a loop does not grant permission to broadcast it. Make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other material in the recording, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies before going live. A successful technical test does not establish that the content is permitted or eligible for monetization. Read YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and its YouTube channel monetization policies; policy outcomes depend on the channel and content.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot connect to YouTube | Stream key, server/protocol selection, or live activation. | Confirm the key and server settings in OBS against Live Control Room, check that live streaming is enabled, and make sure you are using the intended stream in YouTube. |
| OBS dropped frames rise and the connection indicator turns yellow or red | Upload capacity or connection stability. | Check measured upload capacity, shared network use, and connection stability; compare capacity with the configured bitrate and YouTube’s headroom guidance. |
| The PC cannot maintain the chosen output despite a stable connection | Encoder or sustained system load. | Test the actual encoder and scene at the target settings. Reduce scene complexity or choose an output the particular machine can sustain; do not infer capability from component age alone. |
| The media file stops at the end | Media Source loop property. | Open that source’s properties and enable Loop, then preview the end-to-start transition. |
| Live streaming is unavailable on a newly enabled channel | Activation delay or channel eligibility. | Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation and check verification and any live-stream restrictions. |
| YouTube reports stream health warnings | Video settings, connection, or stream configuration. | Read the specific Live Control Room message, recheck the encoder settings and network test, and repeat a test using representative motion and audio before the extended run. |
