You can loop a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an AWS GPU instance with FFmpeg, but a reliable 4K60 broadcast requires more than adding a loop flag: the encoder must sustain real-time output, the stream must match YouTube’s ingest settings, and reconnects and monitoring need to be tested. This guide walks through the setup and the checks to make before leaving it unattended.
What you need before you start
- An AWS account and an instance type available in your chosen region that supports the encoder path you plan to use.
- A 3840×2160, 60 fps source video stored on the instance or reachable through a dependable input path.
- FFmpeg with the appropriate hardware-encoding support, plus the matching NVIDIA driver if you plan to use NVENC on a G-series instance.
- A YouTube Live event configured in Live Control Room, with its ingest endpoint and stream key.
- Enough sustained upload capacity from the instance to carry the selected bitrate, plus room for audio and network overhead.
Do not assume a GPU model or an AWS benchmark guarantees a particular 4K60 output. Source codec, filters, encoder settings, driver, and instance size all affect the result; validate your exact workload.
Choose an AWS instance approach
| Option | What AWS documents | What to verify for this stream |
|---|---|---|
| VT1 | AWS positions VT1 for video transcoding and live-streaming workloads, with stated support for streams up to 4K UHD at 60 fps. Its announcement also claims up to 64 simultaneous 1080p60 streams in real time. | Confirm current regional availability, suitable instance capacity, and that your FFmpeg setup supports the relevant Video SDK path. The 1080p60 capacity claim is not evidence that a specific configuration will run your 4K60 YouTube output. |
| G6 | AWS describes G6 as powered by NVIDIA L4 GPUs, with two video encoders per L4 GPU, AV1 hardware encoding, and NVENC library support. | Choose an instance size and driver that expose the encoder you need, then test your own source and output settings. The capability description does not certify a 24/7 YouTube playout configuration. |
AWS’s published FFmpeg benchmark, dated January 4, 2024, used 4K60 source clips but its live-stream scenario encoded five lower-resolution outputs: 1080p, 720p, 480p, 360p, and 160p. The tested G4dn setup sustained up to four such parallel encodings. That is a multi-rendition result, not a direct measurement of one 4K60 output stream. AWS advises testing your own workload. See AWS’s FFmpeg benchmark.
For VT1, AWS’s 2023 announcement listed US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo). That list is dated; check current availability before planning deployment. See AWS’s VT1 announcement.

Set the YouTube output parameters
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, specifies 3840×2160 progressive video at up to 60 fps and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For 4K/2160p at 60 fps, its recommended bitrate is 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for H.265 or AV1; listed minimums are 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for H.265 or AV1. Treat the recommendation as a target, not proof your instance or network can sustain it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio. Its advanced settings recommend stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Ingest: Use RTMPS where available. YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP. Its guidance says 4K streams do not offer the low-latency optimization option and use normal latency.
Encoder option names and support vary by FFmpeg build, codec, GPU, and driver. Confirm the options available in your installed build rather than assuming a flag from another system will work. Configure the YouTube Live event and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live event and stream. Copy the ingest endpoint and the corresponding stream key.
- Keep the key private. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or log. Use a restricted configuration file or a secret-management method appropriate to your AWS environment, and limit access to it.
- Check the event’s resolution and stream-health feedback once FFmpeg begins publishing. If the stream key is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the publishing configuration.
A stream key authorizes publishing to the associated YouTube stream; it is not a substitute for checking that the selected event, endpoint, and output format match. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion like the real broadcast and monitoring its stream-health messages. See YouTube’s setup and testing guidance.
Run FFmpeg as a real-time loop
The core pattern is to read the file at real-time speed, repeat it indefinitely, encode the output, and publish to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL. AWS’s FFmpeg example demonstrates -re -stream_loop -1 for a recorded MP4, but its published settings target AWS IVS at 30 fps and 3 Mbps—not YouTube 4K60. Use it to understand the loop mechanism, not as a ready-to-run YouTube command. See AWS’s FFmpeg streaming example.

- Install an FFmpeg build that supports your chosen encoder and confirm that the expected hardware encoder is available. On NVIDIA systems, verify the driver and NVENC support before configuring the output.
- Place the source file at a stable path and verify it has the intended video and audio streams. Check that its duration and content are suitable for repeating; the loop restarts the file, so the transition from its end to its beginning will be visible or audible if those points do not match.
- Build an FFmpeg command using the input loop and real-time pacing pattern below. Substitute the input path, encoder options, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio settings, and YouTube RTMPS endpoint and key for your configuration. This is a pattern, not a complete universal command: hardware encoder names and option syntax differ by FFmpeg build, and the YouTube ingest URL should not be guessed.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
For the video encoder options, select progressive 3840×2160 output at 60 fps, CBR at the applicable YouTube target, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose H.264, HEVC, or AV1 only if your encoder path supports it and YouTube accepts the resulting stream. Ensure audio is encoded compatibly. Avoid placing a live key directly into a command saved in shell history or a script that others can read; use a protected configuration or secret-injection method.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re paces file reading in real time. They do not by themselves configure a YouTube-compliant encoder, guarantee that the GPU can keep up, or implement recovery if the process or instance stops.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short controlled run using the same source, audio, encoder, and bitrate planned for the live loop.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health, ingest warnings, dropped frames, resolution, and audio. Listen to the beginning and end of the loop and inspect the transition between repeats.
- Confirm the instance can sustain encoding and outbound traffic over an extended test, not just a brief launch. Review FFmpeg output and system metrics for encoder errors, overload, memory pressure, or network interruptions.
- Test what happens if FFmpeg exits and if the connection to YouTube drops. Decide how the process will be restarted, how alerts and logs will be retained, and who will respond. The referenced AWS material does not certify a turnkey fault-tolerant 24/7 design.
- Check disk space and the source file’s availability after reboot or process restart. Confirm that credentials remain protected and that the YouTube event and key stay valid for the intended schedule.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion comparable to the real stream and monitoring stream health and messages. AWS likewise recommends validating benchmark results against your own requirements. A successful short test does not establish long-term availability.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube rejects the connection or never receives video | Wrong event, endpoint, or key; invalid RTMPS destination; unsupported output configuration. | Copy the endpoint and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, verify the destination format, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error without exposing the key. |
| Frames drop or the stream falls behind | The encoder or instance cannot sustain real-time 4K60, or the network cannot carry the selected bitrate. | Check FFmpeg timing and system metrics. Test the exact codec, source, filters, and bitrate; resize or change the encoder path if it cannot keep pace. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate instability, keyframes outside the recommended interval, incompatible codec settings, or insufficient upstream capacity. | Use CBR, target the appropriate YouTube bitrate recommendation, set a two-second keyframe interval, and review the full encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance. |
| Picture works but audio is missing or rejected | The input may lack an audio stream, or output codec, sample rate, or channel layout may not match the expected settings. | Inspect the input streams and encoder output. Use AAC or MP3 and check YouTube’s advanced recommendations for stereo audio. |
| The video stops after one play | The input loop option is missing, misspelled, or placed incorrectly in the command. | Confirm that -stream_loop -1 is applied to the video input and review FFmpeg output for the file reopening at the end. |
| The stream stops after a process or connection failure | Looping the file does not restart FFmpeg or reconnect the publisher. | Test process supervision and reconnect behavior separately, preserve logs, and define an alert and recovery procedure before relying on continuous operation. |

The material cited here does not establish current instance prices, the least expensive instance for this workload, regional capacity, or total network and data charges. Estimate the specific instance’s runtime, storage, and network costs for your region and expected schedule, then validate performance before committing to continuous use. The GPU’s advertised encoder capability is not a cost or capacity estimate for one 4K60 YouTube output.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A technically valid loop is not automatically eligible to stay live or earn revenue. Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use, including music, gameplay footage, and any third-party material. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions depend on the content and channel; repeating a recording does not itself establish that the material is authorized or sufficiently original. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content before streaming.
