Run Bitcoin Core on a current Linux VPS with fast persistent storage, a dedicated unprivileged account, enough disk for your chosen storage mode, and a firewall that exposes only the services you actually need. An unpruned node requires substantially more than 740 GB during initial synchronization; pruning can reduce steady-state data to about 7 GB, but removes historical data and several features.

This guide covers capacity planning, installation, headless operation, port 8333, synchronization, pruning decisions, security, monitoring, backups, and recovery.

Start with the storage decision

Storage mode determines the VPS you need. Bitcoin.org’s current download guidance puts the initial blockchain download at over 740 GB. Its requirements page recommends a 750 GB disk as a baseline, but an unpruned node should not be deployed on a volume that is already nearly full: the chain database grows, and initial validation needs working space for temporary files and indexes.

A pruned node validates the chain while discarding older raw block and undo data. The same guidance says pruning can reduce steady-state usage to about 7 GB. That is a dramatically smaller operating footprint, but it is not an archival copy of Bitcoin’s history.

Mode Typical purpose Storage planning Important limitations
Unpruned Historical queries, archival applications, rescans, transaction indexing, or serving old blocks At least the published 750 GB baseline, plus growth and synchronization headroom Higher cost, longer initial sync, and more disk monitoring
Pruned Independent validation, wallet use, current-chain data, and a lower-cost VPS Bitcoin.org reports about 7 GB steady-state; leave expansion room and account for temporary sync usage Incompatible with txindex, rescan, and importwallet; old raw blocks are discarded

Decide this before selecting a VPS plan. Increasing a volume later may be possible, but moving a nearly full node under pressure is riskier than provisioning sensible headroom at the start.

VPS requirements and budget

The published Bitcoin.org requirements recommend 2 GB of RAM, 500 MB per day of download, and 5 GB per day of upload, in addition to the one-time initial download of more than 740 GB. A full-node guide notes that high-speed nodes commonly upload 200 GB or more per month. These are planning figures, not guarantees: peer demand, connection speed, software versions, and provider policies change the actual traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resource Planning figure How to interpret it on a VPS
Disk 750 GB recommended baseline for an unpruned node Use a larger volume for growth and synchronization working space; a pruned node needs far less steady-state capacity
Initial download Over 740 GB One-time transfer during initial synchronization; verify that the provider’s allowance and transfer policy can absorb it
Memory 2 GB recommended Published minimum recommendation; additional RAM can improve comfort during validation, but no current target is specified
Download traffic 500 MB/day recommended Recurring peer traffic after setup, separate from the initial chain download
Upload traffic 5 GB/day recommended Budget carefully; high-speed nodes may exceed 200 GB/month
CPU and storage performance No official VPS IOPS target stated Prefer SSD or NVMe-backed storage and a provider with predictable performance because validation is database-intensive

Check the provider before ordering

  • Confirm the initial transfer allowance, recurring egress quota, overage price, and whether sustained peer traffic can trigger throttling or termination.
  • Verify that the volume can be expanded and that snapshots or backups are available.
  • Require public reachability, or a documented exception, for inbound TCP 8333 if you intend to serve peers.
  • Check how the provider handles IPv4, IPv6, security groups, and filtered ports.
  • Make sure its acceptable-use policy permits a Bitcoin full node.
  • Prefer a console or rescue environment so you can recover a misconfigured firewall without SSH access.

Prepare a secure Linux VPS

Use a current, supported Linux distribution. Create a dedicated account such as bitcoin; do not run the daemon as root. Keep administration in a separate account with sudo rights and SSH keys.

  1. Create the VPS and attach the persistent data volume.
  2. Create the bitcoin user with a non-login or restricted shell policy appropriate to your administration model.
  3. Install security updates and enable automatic security updates where your distribution supports them.
  4. Install your SSH public key, disable password authentication when practical, and restrict SSH to known source addresses.
  5. Apply a default-deny firewall policy. Permit SSH only from your management addresses, permit outbound connections, and reserve TCP 8333 for peer access if you need inbound peers.
  6. Check the mounted volume before installing:
df -h
findmnt

Put the Bitcoin data directory on the persistent volume, not on a small root partition. If the volume is mounted at /srv/bitcoin, either set the service account’s home there or use an explicit -datadir path consistently in every command and service file.

Download and install Bitcoin Core

Obtain Bitcoin Core from the official Bitcoin download page. When practical, verify the release signature and checksum before extracting it; Bitcoin.org describes signature verification as an optional security step that helps detect a tampered download. Use the release’s documented Unix binaries rather than copying an executable from an untrusted mirror.

The Bitcoin Core repository documents these Unix programs:

  • bin/bitcoind — the headless daemon
  • bin/bitcoin-cli — the command-line control client
  • bin/bitcoin-qt — the graphical client, which is normally unnecessary on a VPS
  • bin/bitcoin — the command-line utility included by the project

Install the binaries in a directory such as /usr/local/bin, make them executable, and confirm the dedicated account can run them:

sudo -u bitcoin bitcoind --version
sudo -u bitcoin bitcoin-cli --version

If your distribution or release package uses another path, substitute that path in the commands and the systemd unit below.

Create the configuration

As the bitcoin user, create $HOME/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf. A minimal pruned configuration is:

server=1
daemon=1
prune=10000

prune=10000 requests a roughly 10,000-MB pruning target; actual disk use is not an exact promise because indexes, metadata, and operating-system overhead remain. Choose a value appropriate for your available volume rather than treating the example as a universal minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an unpruned node, omit the prune line. Add txindex=1 only when you have unpruned storage and a real application need. The official full-node guidance says pruning is incompatible with txindex, rescan, and importwallet. A pruned node therefore cannot be converted into an archival, transaction-indexed service simply by adding that option later; plan a new synchronization or migration.

Keep credentials and RPC settings private. Do not add a public RPC bind address to a basic node. If an application needs RPC, bind it to localhost or a private management network and enforce authentication and source restrictions.

Start the daemon headlessly

The repository documents bitcoind for Unix, and Bitcoin.org’s full-node guide shows the daemon form:

sudo -u bitcoin bitcoind -daemon

Stop it cleanly with:

sudo -u bitcoin bitcoin-cli stop

Do not rely on an interactive SSH session for a production node. Use systemd so the process starts after the data volume and network are available, restarts after an unexpected failure, and can be inspected with standard service tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create /etc/systemd/system/bitcoind.service with paths matching your installation:

[Unit]
Description=Bitcoin Core daemon
After=network-online.target local-fs.target
Wants=network-online.target
RequiresMountsFor=/home/bitcoin/.bitcoin

[Service]
Type=forking
User=bitcoin
Group=bitcoin
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/bitcoind -daemon -pid=/home/bitcoin/.bitcoin/bitcoind.pid
ExecStop=/usr/local/bin/bitcoin-cli stop
PIDFile=/home/bitcoin/.bitcoin/bitcoind.pid
Restart=on-failure
PrivateTmp=true

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Reload and enable the service:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now bitcoind
sudo systemctl status bitcoind

If you use a separate mount such as /srv/bitcoin, change RequiresMountsFor, -pid, and any configuration paths accordingly. A service that starts before its volume is mounted can create a new data directory on the root disk, consuming space and leaving you with two apparent nodes.

Configure peer networking and port 8333

Bitcoin.org states: “To support the Bitcoin network, you also need to allow incoming connections.” Bitcoin’s standard peer-to-peer port is TCP 8333. In a VPS environment there is usually no home-router forwarding layer, but two independent firewalls still matter:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Allow TCP 8333 in the provider’s security group or network firewall.
  2. Allow TCP 8333 in the Linux host firewall.
  3. Keep outbound peer traffic permitted.
  4. Reload the firewall and verify that the rule applies to the correct IPv4 and IPv6 interfaces.

If you use a port-forwarding scenario elsewhere, Bitcoin.org’s guide says the external and internal Bitcoin ports should both be 8333. A VPS normally maps the public address directly to the instance, so the provider rule and host rule are the relevant controls.

Inbound connectivity is useful when you want to contribute relay capacity. A node can still make outbound connections when inbound access is unavailable, but a private or filtered VPS will serve fewer peers. Never expose RPC on 8333 or on a second public port; peer traffic and administrative RPC are different services.

Track initial synchronization

A running process is not proof that the node is synchronized. Query the daemon:

sudo -u bitcoin bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo

Inspect at least:

  • initialblockdownload: while true, the node is still performing initial synchronization.
  • blocks: the validated local height.
  • headers: the best header height known to the node.
  • verificationprogress: a progress estimate, not a completion guarantee.
  • pruned: confirms whether the running node is operating in pruned mode.
  • size_on_disk: the current data footprint.

Compare the local height with a trusted independent source, allowing for normal propagation delay. Inspect the daemon’s debug log in the Bitcoin data directory when progress stalls. During initial validation, high disk activity and sustained CPU use are normal; a full volume, memory pressure, repeated crashes, or a provider-imposed bandwidth cap are not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful health checks

sudo systemctl is-active bitcoind
sudo -u bitcoin bitcoin-cli getnetworkinfo
sudo -u bitcoin bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo
df -h /home/bitcoin/.bitcoin
journalctl -u bitcoind --since "1 hour ago"

Set alerts before synchronization begins. At minimum, monitor free disk space and inode use, memory pressure, process state, upload and download totals, and whether RPC responds locally. Alert on a falling free-space trend rather than waiting for a “disk full” error.

Choose pruning deliberately

When pruning is the right fit

Pruning suits a VPS whose primary jobs are independent validation, wallet use, and access to current chain data. It keeps validation behavior while deleting older raw blocks and undo data, making a small instance practical. Keep expansion capacity anyway: the target is a policy setting, not a guarantee that every file will remain below a particular number.

When an unpruned node is required

Use unpruned storage when software needs historical raw blocks, a transaction index, archival queries, rescans, or the ability to serve older blocks to peers. Provision beyond today’s reported chain size so growth and synchronization temporary files do not fill the volume. A plan that exactly matches 750 GB can become unsafe as the chain and indexes grow.

Changing modes

Pruning is selected with prune=N in bitcoin.conf or at startup. Because pruning discards data, enabling it is not reversible by simply deleting the line: restoring historical blocks requires obtaining them again and rebuilding the relevant indexes. Likewise, adding txindex=1 to a pruned configuration is unsupported; migrate to an unpruned data directory and allow the index to build.

Security hardening for an internet-facing node

  • Least privilege: run bitcoind as the dedicated unprivileged bitcoin user and keep SSH administration separate.
  • SSH: use keys, disable password login where appropriate, restrict source addresses, and protect the administrative account with a strong local policy.
  • Firewall: expose only SSH from approved networks and TCP 8333 when inbound peers are intended. Keep RPC private.
  • Patch management: keep the operating system and Bitcoin Core release current. Verify downloaded release signatures when feasible.
  • Wallet protection: if the built-in wallet is enabled, encrypt it. Back up the wallet after creation and after passphrase changes; anyone who obtains the wallet or its backups may be able to steal funds.
  • Provider controls: watch transfer quotas and overage rules. Bitcoin.org warns that excessive bandwidth can lead to charges or service termination, and that node users can be targeted by bandwidth-exhaustion attacks.
  • Data safety: stop the daemon cleanly before volume migration or snapshots to reduce corruption risk.

Do not treat a cloud snapshot as a complete disaster-recovery plan. Test restoring configuration and wallet backups on a separate system, and document the exact data-directory and permission layout needed to bring the service back.

Bandwidth and availability planning

The requirements figures of 500 MB/day download and 5 GB/day upload are recurring recommendations, while the more-than-740-GB initial download happens during synchronization. The full-node guide’s estimate of 200 GB or more monthly upload on high-speed connections shows why an “unlimited” label needs closer examination. Read the provider’s fair-use language, measure actual traffic after the node has peers, and configure alerts below the contractual limit.

Bitcoin.org’s full-node guide gives a six-hours-per-day minimum availability figure. For a VPS, continuous operation is usually practical, but maintenance windows still happen. Schedule reboots, patching, and volume work; stop Bitcoin Core cleanly first and verify synchronization after the system returns.

Troubleshooting common failures

The daemon exits immediately

  • Run journalctl -u bitcoind and inspect the Bitcoin debug log for a configuration or permission error.
  • Confirm that the data directory exists, is mounted, and is owned by bitcoin.
  • Check for a stale PID file only after confirming no daemon process is running.
  • Verify that the service’s binary path matches the installed release.

The node is stuck at the same height

  • Check getnetworkinfo for peer count and connection state.
  • Confirm outbound traffic is allowed and that provider filtering is not blocking peer connections.
  • Inspect disk space, inode use, CPU, and memory pressure.
  • Compare local headers and blocks; a large gap can indicate ongoing validation rather than a network failure.

Peers cannot connect inbound

  • Verify TCP 8333 in both the provider security group and the host firewall.
  • Check whether the VPS has a public address and whether IPv4 and IPv6 rules differ.
  • Confirm that the daemon is listening on the intended interface and port.
  • Allow time for peers to discover the endpoint after rules are corrected.

The volume is filling

  • Check size_on_disk and filesystem free space before deleting anything.
  • For an unpruned node, expand the volume before it reaches capacity.
  • For a new deployment that does not need historical data, rebuild or resynchronize in pruned mode rather than deleting database files manually.
  • Do not remove chainstate or block files by hand; an incomplete deletion can force a lengthy reindex or leave an unusable data directory.

Operational checklist

  • Storage mode chosen before the VPS plan.
  • Persistent SSD or NVMe volume mounted and tested.
  • At least the published 750 GB baseline provisioned for unpruned operation, with growth headroom.
  • 2 GB RAM or more, with monitoring for memory pressure.
  • Provider transfer limits and Bitcoin-node policy confirmed.
  • Dedicated bitcoin account and separate SSH administration.
  • Bitcoin Core release downloaded from the official source and signature checked when practical.
  • bitcoin.conf stored with restrictive permissions.
  • systemd service enabled with correct mount dependencies.
  • TCP 8333 opened only when inbound peer service is intended, in both firewall layers.
  • RPC restricted to localhost or a private management network.
  • Synchronization verified through getblockchaininfo, not just process status.
  • Disk, bandwidth, memory, process, and RPC alerts active.
  • Wallet encrypted and backups restored in a test environment if funds are involved.

Bottom line

For a validation-focused VPS, choose fast persistent storage, run a pruned Bitcoin Core daemon under a dedicated Linux account, and expose TCP 8333 only when you can support inbound peers and their bandwidth. For archival queries, rescans, or txindex, choose an unpruned volume substantially larger than 750 GB and budget for continuing growth. In both cases, synchronization checks, private RPC, patching, wallet backups, and bandwidth monitoring are part of operating the node—not optional extras.
