An embedded playlist is usually simpler if people should watch on demand; a VPS encoder is for a scheduled or ongoing live broadcast. AWS Lightsail can run that encoder, but it does not remove the need to configure YouTube Live, check broadcast rights, and monitor recovery.
Choose between an embedded playlist and a live broadcast
| Question | Embedded YouTube playlist | Continuous live stream |
|---|---|---|
| How playback starts | Each visitor starts playback on the church website; it is not synchronized across viewers. | Viewers join the same live broadcast timeline. |
| What runs the video | YouTube’s player; a VPS is only needed if you are also hosting the church website. | An encoder process on Lightsail sends video to YouTube Live. |
| Best fit | Visitors should choose when to watch previously uploaded sermons. | You want a live channel experience, potentially with live notifications or chat. |
| Operational burden | Embed the playlist and maintain the website. | Maintain the VPS, media source, encoder process, stream configuration, and monitoring. |
| Interruption handling | Visitors can reload the player or choose another video. | You need a tested encoder restart and YouTube reconnection plan. |
YouTube’s player parameters support playlist looping. To loop a single video, enable loop and set the playlist parameter to that video’s ID as well. Autoplay may be restricted by a visitor’s browser, so do not make it essential to the page’s function. See YouTube’s embedded player parameters and use YouTube’s share/embed workflow to obtain the player code.
Check the channel and content before configuring Lightsail
Confirm live-stream eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the first service or scheduled launch. YouTube’s encoder flow uses a server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio; keep the key private and never publish it in website source, screenshots, or a public script. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Confirm rights to every sermon and music track
Before rebroadcasting, make sure the church has permission for the sermon recording and any music, images, or other material included in it. Owning a recording or having performed a song in a service does not by itself establish online rebroadcast rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate from AWS hosting; resolve rights with the relevant rights holders and consult YouTube’s copyright guidance.

Plan the Lightsail instance for the actual workload
A Lightsail instance is cloud compute, not a dedicated streaming appliance. In this design it runs an encoder and sends the resulting stream to YouTube; viewers receive the broadcast from YouTube, not directly from the VPS. Select a Linux/Unix bundle after accounting for encoder CPU and memory needs, the source video format and resolution, local media and log storage, and expected data transfer. AWS publishes vCPU, memory, storage, transfer allowance, and pricing by bundle, and these options can change. There is no universally established minimum size for an unspecified encoder and workload; test the chosen configuration before relying on it. Compare current bundles at AWS Lightsail pricing.
If a domain name or another service must reach the instance at a stable address, attach a static IPv4. AWS documents that the default dynamic public IPv4 changes when the instance is stopped and restarted; an attached static IP remains stable. A stable address is not required just because the encoder sends outbound video to YouTube. See Lightsail static IP documentation.

Configure an encoder and send it to YouTube Live
The exact encoder, installation method, and command depend on the media and operating system. The following sequence covers the required setup without assuming a particular encoder or claiming a universal command will work for every file. Verify the encoder’s current maintenance status and its CPU, codec, and reconnect behavior for your selected Lightsail bundle before deployment.
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, complete the channel eligibility and activation steps before the planned broadcast. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or select the broadcast: In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a live stream or choose an existing one. Copy its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s documented encoder instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Prepare the media source: Put the prerecorded sermon or playlist where the encoder can read it. Check that the files play through to their end and that the playlist order and transitions are correct. Do not assume a playlist will automatically restart after the last item unless the chosen encoder is configured to do so.
- Install and configure the encoder: On the Lightsail Linux instance, install a maintained encoder suitable for the source material. Configure its input to read the sermon or playlist and its output to use the YouTube server URL and stream key. Store credentials in a file or secret mechanism with access limited to the service account; do not commit them to source control or expose them in web-accessible directories.
- Set a format YouTube and the instance can sustain: Choose output resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate according to the source and encoder documentation, and verify the current YouTube recommendations for the chosen stream type. Avoid upscaling low-resolution footage. Test for sustained CPU use and dropped frames at the intended output; the available sources do not establish one bitrate or instance size that fits every sermon file and encoder.
- Start the encoder, then complete YouTube’s launch step: Start the process on Lightsail and confirm that YouTube Live Control Room receives a healthy preview. Complete the scheduled or live launch action in Studio as required. Confirm the public watch page, audio, video, title, and visibility from a separate device or account.
- Keep the process alive deliberately: Run the encoder under a process manager or service configuration that can be restarted after a process failure or machine reboot. Configure logging and a notification path for failures. A process manager does not itself prove the encoder will reconnect correctly to YouTube; test that behavior with a noncritical broadcast.
Restrict network access and keep an operational recovery plan
Use only the inbound rules you need
In the Lightsail networking/firewall settings, allow SSH only for administration and only from trusted addresses where practical. Add HTTP and HTTPS only if the instance also hosts the church website. An encoder sending video to YouTube is an outbound connection, so do not open an inbound streaming port by default. Lightsail treats IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately; review both if IPv6 is enabled. See Lightsail firewall documentation.

Snapshots help restore a machine, not resume a stream
Enable automatic snapshots for a Linux/Unix instance if you need a point-in-time recovery copy. AWS says Lightsail retains the seven most recent automatic snapshots. A snapshot can help restore instance state, but it does not demonstrate that the encoder restarts, reconnects to YouTube, or resumes the broadcast. Test those behaviors separately and decide who receives alerts. See Lightsail automatic snapshots documentation.
Plan for event duration and maintenance
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a guarantee that one broadcast can remain uninterrupted indefinitely. Schedule maintenance, monitor the Live Control Room and encoder logs, test restart and reconnection behavior, and identify an alternate playback plan for a service if the live process fails. No specific uptime for this application follows from the cited AWS or YouTube documentation.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio does not accept the stream | Live streaming is not enabled yet, or the encoder URL/key is wrong. | Check channel eligibility and activation status; recopy the server URL and stream key from the selected Live Control Room stream. Never paste the key into a public support post. |
| Preview is missing or stays offline | The encoder has not started, cannot read the media, or cannot reach YouTube. | Check the process status and logs, confirm the input path and media playback, and verify outbound connectivity. Inbound streaming firewall rules are generally not needed for this outbound encoder flow. |
| Video stutters or frames drop | The encoder workload exceeds available CPU or memory, or the selected output settings are unsuitable for the media/workload. | Inspect instance resource use and encoder logs, then test a lower output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if appropriate. Re-test on the chosen bundle; a universal minimum is not established. |
| Broadcast stops and does not return | The process exited, the machine restarted, or the encoder did not reconnect successfully. | Inspect service and encoder logs, restart the process, confirm YouTube receives a fresh preview, and complete any Studio relaunch step. Run a planned failure test before depending on automatic recovery. |
| Website or DNS no longer reaches the VPS | The instance’s default public IPv4 changed after a stop/start. | Update the DNS record or attach and use a Lightsail static IP for a stable endpoint. |
| Playlist does not repeat in an embedded player | The embed has looping enabled but lacks the required playlist value for a single video. | For one video, set the playlist parameter to that video’s ID as well as enabling loop; test autoplay expectations in browsers with playback restrictions. |
Costs and operating trade-offs
Lightsail pricing depends on the selected bundle and its included compute, storage, and data transfer allowance; check AWS’s current regional plan table before choosing. The VPS approach also carries operational work: media preparation, encoder maintenance, monitoring, recovery testing, and rights clearance. If you only need visitors to replay sermons individually, an embedded YouTube playlist avoids keeping an encoder running. If you need one shared live timeline, the VPS encoder sends that continuous program to YouTube Live, while YouTube handles viewer playback and distribution.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube sermons, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining an encoder on Lightsail: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded material as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
