You can loop prerecorded Catholic Mass recordings on YouTube by sending them through an encoder to a YouTube Live event. First confirm the parish has permission to rebroadcast the recordings and ask the relevant diocese whether continuous replay is appropriate. For a dependable archive, use shorter sessions: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Before streaming: confirm permission and liturgical guidance
Technical ability to send a video to YouTube does not establish permission to rebroadcast it or pastoral approval for continuous replay. Check the rights for the recording and the material within it, including music, readings, images, and any identifiable people under the parish’s policies. Keep permission records. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; a stream can be interrupted even when you have a licence unless the rights owner has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. For US parishes, the USCCB says its liturgical-text policy does not cover musical settings or other compositions. Its statement that permission is not required for livestreaming Mass and the Divine Office via social media is not blanket permission to rebroadcast any recording or song. Consult the USCCB copyright guidance and the rights holders for the particular material.
The USCCB’s Guidelines for Televising the Liturgy, approved in 1996 and updated in January 2014, prefer live transmission when possible. They say delayed broadcasts should be recorded as Mass is celebrated in a local worshipping community and broadcast later that same day, recommend telling viewers when a Mass is prerecorded, and say prerecorded music is not appropriate for the liturgy. These are US guidelines; ask your diocesan bishop or liturgy office about the specific plan and applicable local direction. A streaming setup is not liturgical approval.

What you need for a prerecorded YouTube Live stream
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to livestream. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance includes no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days and an age threshold of 16; check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements for current rules.
- An authorized video file and an encoder that can play it as a live feed. YouTube lists OBS Studio and a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded video on its encoder setup page.
- A reliable internet connection for the encoder, a private copy of the source recording, and someone or a service responsible for monitoring the event.
If you mean filming a Mass live rather than replaying a recording, the USCCB’s Live Streaming the Mass guide lists a phone, tripod, and lapel microphone for a basic setup. It recommends horizontal phone orientation for YouTube, stable tripod framing, reliable internet, and checking whether the phone needs a microphone adapter.
Set up a scheduled encoder stream
- Prepare the recording. Confirm that the file plays correctly from beginning to end, that its audio is intelligible, and that the video is authorized for the intended public broadcast. Keep a separate local copy; YouTube’s archive is not a substitute for your source file.
- Create the event in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, go to the Live Control Room, and create or schedule a stream. Choose the event’s visibility and planned start time deliberately, then confirm the watch page is accessible to the intended viewers.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter these in the encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not post it publicly or include it in screenshots.
- Configure the encoder to play the video as its input. Select the authorized prerecorded file or playlist, and set the encoder to send its output to the YouTube stream URL using the key. The exact controls differ between encoders; YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the stream URL/key workflow.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check the picture, sound, stream health, and watch-page visibility before starting the event for viewers. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing and monitoring the feed.
- Monitor the event. Watch for stream-health warnings, audio or video problems, and copyright notices. Keep a separate local recording or source file in case the live event is interrupted.
- End the session intentionally. If you need a YouTube archive, stop and start separate sessions well before 12 hours rather than relying on a single uninterrupted stream. Retain the original recording locally.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will produce an archive. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore conflicts with relying on YouTube as the only copy of the complete stream.
