Create a normal, unprivileged Linux account, install the required 32-bit libraries, download the server files with SteamCMD, configure serverDZ.cfg and launch parameters, then expose the selected UDP ports through every firewall and router in the path.

Start with a vanilla server and verify its logs and connectivity before adding Workshop content. That order separates Linux, network and mission problems from mod dependency problems. The commands below use an account named dayz and directories under /home/dayz/servers; substitute your own paths, distribution package names and installed executable or mission directory where they differ.

Choose where the server will run
The software procedure is the same on a home Linux machine, a self-managed virtual private server (VPS) or a dedicated physical host. The practical differences are network reachability, hardware headroom and how much maintenance you accept.

For any option, prefer strong single-thread CPU performance, sufficient RAM headroom and an SSD. Bohemia’s published minimum is a dual-core Intel processor at 2.4 GHz or a dual-core AMD processor at 2.5 GHz, 6 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of storage; that page highly recommends an SSD for installation and logs. Those are minimum requirements, not a promise of a particular player count or mod load. A community setup guide gives 8 GB as a practical minimum and 16 GB as a recommendation, with 20 GB and 40 GB SSD examples respectively. Treat those larger figures as community guidance rather than official requirements.

Create a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account
Do not run the server as root. Bohemia’s warning is explicit: “Do not run the server as root!” A compromised game process running as root could alter or read much more of the operating system than a process confined to its own account.
- Create a normal account (the example uses
dayz) and set a password or an SSH key according to your host’s access policy. - Give that account ownership of its server directory, such as
/home/dayz/servers. - Perform SteamCMD installation, file updates and server launches as that account. Use
sudoonly for operating-system administration, package installation and firewall changes.
Keep configuration, profiles, logs, mission files and persistence under the account’s directory. This makes backups and permission checks straightforward and limits the blast radius of a server-side exploit.

The Linux guide calls for architecture-specific 32-bit libraries. Package names differ between releases, so confirm the names for your distribution before running the command.
Debian or Ubuntu

sudo pacman -Syy glibc lib32-glibc nanoThese examples are distribution-specific starting points, not a guarantee that every release uses the same package names. If your release reports that a package is unavailable, check its multilib or 32-bit repository configuration and use the corresponding package name documented for that release. Install the libraries before launching SteamCMD or the DayZ executable; missing 32-bit dependencies commonly show up as an immediate loader error rather than a useful DayZ log.
Download SteamCMD and install the DayZ server
SteamCMD is the standard Steam tool for downloading and updating dedicated-server files. Bohemia’s Linux flow creates a SteamCMD directory, downloads steamcmd_linux.tar.gz and extracts it. The following commands keep SteamCMD and the DayZ files separate.

Do not paste a password into a shell history or a publicly readable script. Steam Guard or an interactive prompt may require a follow-up login. Re-running the same command is also the normal update path.
Some community instructions show an anonymous form with validate:
~/servers/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/servers/dayz-server/ +login anonymous +app_update 223350 validate +quitAuthentication requirements can differ between the base server files and Workshop mod downloads. If anonymous access fails, use an account authorized for the required content and follow the current SteamCMD authentication prompts. The important installation detail is the DayZ server app ID 223350; do not substitute the client app ID.
Build the configuration and launch command
DayZ’s behavior comes from two places: a serverDZ.cfg configuration file and command-line launch parameters. The configuration holds server settings, while parameters select ports, profiles, missions, logs, mods and storage roots.
Create a minimal configuration
Place serverDZ.cfg in the directory you intend to use and fill it with the settings appropriate for your server. The exact keys and values are defined by the current configuration reference; keep a backup before making edits. The launch command selects the file with -config=serverDZ.cfg.
Launch a vanilla server first
A minimal pattern is:

-config=serverDZ.cfgselects the server configuration file.-port=2302sets the game listen port. It is configurable; 2302 is the commonly documented default example.-profiles=/home/dayz/profilesputs profiles and diagnostic output in a known location.-mission=./mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplusselects the mission directory. Verify that the mission exists in your installation.
For troubleshooting, add the logging switches documented by Bohemia: -doLogs, -adminLog and, when needed, -netLog. Keep diagnostics enabled while validating a new installation, then choose the log level that gives you useful operational history without filling the disk.
Use separate storage when needed
The -storage parameter selects a custom persistence root. A separate path can make backups, migrations and rollback easier, especially when you keep the installed binaries immutable. Make sure the dayz account can read and write the chosen directory and that your backup job includes it.
Open every required network layer
A server can be running correctly and still be invisible if one firewall or NAT rule blocks it. When applicable, allow the selected UDP ports in all three places:
- The Linux host firewall.
- The VPS or dedicated-provider security group or network firewall.
- The home router’s port-forwarding rule from the public interface to the Linux host.
Community setup documentation commonly forwards UDP 2302-2305. Bohemia’s configuration reference uses -port=2302 for the game listener and documents steamQueryPort=2305 as a query-port example. Both are configurable, so if you choose different values, open and forward those values instead.
On a home connection, confirm that the router has a real public address. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent inbound connections even when a forwarding rule looks correct. On a VPS, check the provider’s security group in addition to the operating-system firewall. Do not expose unrelated administrative services just to make DayZ visible.
If the server does not appear in the browser, check the query port, public IP address, firewall state and NAT mapping before changing gameplay settings. A local connection from the same machine or LAN can help distinguish a DayZ configuration problem from an Internet reachability problem, but some routers do not support hairpin NAT, so a local test is not proof that public access works.

Verify the first launch before adding mods
Run the server without -mod or -serverMod until the vanilla instance is stable.
- Start the executable from the
dayzaccount and watch for an immediate exit or missing-library message. - Confirm that the process remains running and that the expected profile or RPT logs are being written.
- Connect from the same host or a nearby client using the selected address and game port.
- Test an external connection if the server is intended for the Internet. Check the query port and all firewall layers if it is not listed.
- Stop the process cleanly, inspect the last log entries and restart it once more. Repeatability matters more than a single successful launch.
This sequence isolates executable, mission, permissions and network errors. Introducing Workshop files before it succeeds makes every failure ambiguous.
Add Workshop mods deliberately
Bohemia documents two launch parameters: -mod for mods visible to and generally required by clients, and -serverMod for server-only mods. Use the appropriate parameter and preserve the exact load order expected by the mod authors.
Every mod is an individual compatibility decision. Before enabling one, check:
- Whether clients must install the same mod and which version they need.
- Whether the mod supplies key or signature files that must be present in the server’s key directory.
- Its required load order and dependencies.
- Whether it supports the current DayZ server build and mission.
- Where it stores configuration or persistence data and how large those files may become.
Workshop downloads may require a Steam account even when the base server files can be obtained anonymously. The community automation project DayZ-Linux-server describes a script-based approach for installing or updating the server and configured mods with a Steam account. Treat automation as an option, not a substitute for understanding the paths, credentials and launch parameters it generates.
Keep mod failures distinguishable
Add one mod or one tightly related set at a time, restart, and inspect the logs. If the server stops after a change, remove the newest entry and confirm that the vanilla or previously working set still launches. A client-side missing-mod error, a server-side dependency error and a signature/key error require different fixes; the RPT and profile logs should identify which class you are seeing.

Update without losing the world
Bohemia states that updating uses the same SteamCMD commands as installation, and Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the download and update path for dedicated-server files.

- Back up
serverDZ.cfg, the selected mission and custom mission files, profiles and logs, and the persistence directory selected by-storageor your normal installation layout. - Run the SteamCMD command again with
+app_update 223350. - Review the installed executable, mission folders and mod directories after the update. A changed filename or directory should be corrected in the launch command rather than worked around with stale copies.
- Start without newly changed mods when practical, inspect the logs, and then restore the mod set deliberately.
- Keep a rollback copy when a major server update or mod change is planned. If the new build fails, stop it, restore the known-good files and persistence backup, and investigate from the preserved logs.
Never treat an update as only a binary replacement. Configuration syntax, mission customizations, mod versions and persistence files can interact, so a recoverable backup is part of the update procedure.
Operate the server securely and predictably
Permissions and secrets
- Keep the server process and SteamCMD under the unprivileged account.
- Restrict write permissions on the server directory to that account and administrators who genuinely need access.
- Protect Steam credentials and avoid putting passwords in shell history, public service files or world-readable scripts.
- Expose only the DayZ UDP ports and the administration method you actually use.
Logs and disk space
SSD storage is especially useful for installation and logs according to Bohemia’s requirements page. Monitor the profile and RPT directories so verbose diagnostics do not consume the filesystem. Keep enough history to diagnose a restart or mod regression, then rotate or archive older logs.
Backups
A useful backup set contains serverDZ.cfg, the mission and custom files, the profile directory when it contains administrative evidence, and all persistence data. Test restoring to a separate directory or spare host; a file that was never restored is only an assumption of recoverability.
Vanilla or modded: decide what you are taking on

Troubleshoot by symptom
The process exits immediately
- Check that the required 32-bit libraries for your distribution are installed.
- Confirm the executable path and permissions under the
dayzaccount. - Verify that
serverDZ.cfgand the mission directory named in-configand-missionactually exist. - Read the first error in the profile or RPT log before changing multiple settings.
The server runs but is not listed
- Confirm the game port and query port values in the launch command and configuration.
- Allow the selected UDP ports in the Linux firewall and any VPS security group.
- For a home host, verify router forwarding and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT.
- Check that players are using the current public address and that the query port is not blocked.
Players cannot join after a mod change
- Compare the client’s mod list and versions with the server’s
-modentries. - Check the required load order and dependencies.
- Verify key and signature files for server-enforced content.
- Remove the newest mod, confirm the previous set works, and reintroduce changes one at a time.
The server works locally but not from the Internet
This points first to public addressing, NAT or an upstream firewall rather than a mission setting. Test from a genuinely external network, confirm the router forwards to the correct private address, and check the provider firewall before editing serverDZ.cfg.

A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Use a normal account; never run
DayZServer_x64or SteamCMD as root. - Keep SteamCMD and the DayZ installation in separate, known directories.
- Record the exact launch command, selected ports, mission path, profile path and storage path.
- Back up configuration, mission/custom files, profiles and persistence before updates.
- Check logs after every restart and mod change.
- Keep a rollback copy for major DayZ or Workshop updates.
- Review disk usage, especially when diagnostic logging is enabled.
