Create a YouTube encoder stream, use its RTMPS address and private stream key, set a real-time output profile, and test the stream before making it public. Whether a particular Pi can sustain your chosen encode depends on the board, source, and settings: measure your own setup rather than assuming.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, plus a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio.
- A Raspberry Pi single-board computer, stable power and network, and the media stored locally or otherwise accessible to the Pi.
- An FFmpeg build that supports the input formats, codecs, and RTMPS output you plan to use. Check its available options with
ffmpeg -h full; package versions and build features can differ. - Stable upload capacity with headroom above the combined audio and video bitrate.
- Permission to stream every recording, composition, image, animation, and video segment in the program.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If your schedule may run longer, check the current YouTube guidance and plan separately for continuity and archiving: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Can I livestream devotional songs I found online?
Not just because they are devotional, publicly available, or commonly shared. The religious subject matter does not grant music, recording, performance, or visual rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require the streamer to hold the necessary rights, including applicable music licensing rights, for worldwide use on Google services: Livestream terms and conditions.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may replace the live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if identified content remains. Even a licensed third-party stream can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. See Copyright issues with live streams.

Use original material or obtain permission that covers the intended live broadcast, territory, and platform. Check rights for the specific recording as well as the underlying composition; permission for one does not automatically establish permission for the other.
Prepare the YouTube stream and keep its key private
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open Live Control Room.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS. If the normal URL is displayed, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS endpoint where available. Follow the current instructions in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not publish it in a script repository, paste it into a public post, or leave it in shell history on a shared system. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- Confirm that your FFmpeg build can connect to the endpoint and that the URL uses the correct host, path, protocol, and port. Copy the current values rather than guessing their format.
Choose the right source layout and loop it
One file with both video and audio
If an MP4 or similar file already contains the visual and devotional audio, use it as a single input and loop that input. Confirm that its codecs and container work with your chosen output method.
A still image with audio files
For a still image accompanied by one or more audio tracks, provide separate visual and audio inputs and explicitly map the intended video and audio streams. The mapping and looping arrangement depend on the formats and whether the audio is one file or a sequence; inspect the inputs rather than assuming FFmpeg will select the intended streams.

A playlist or mixed media
Build and verify the playlist or concatenated source before going live. Arbitrary files with different formats, stream layouts, or durations do not necessarily loop seamlessly. Check transitions, audio continuity, and the resulting output for a representative run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. In common builds, -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping; put it before the input it applies to. For file playback intended to behave as a live stream, -re reads at native rate instead of sending the file as quickly as the machine can process it. Confirm option behavior in your installed build with ffmpeg -h full and consult the FFmpeg documentation.
Set an output profile YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For 720p at 30 fps, YouTube lists 2–6 Mbps video bitrate. Stereo AAC is listed at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For a 30 fps output, a GOP of 60 frames corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval. Treat the 720p30 range as platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular Pi can encode it or that every source benefits from the same setting. Resolution, frame rate, source codecs, installed encoders, CPU load, and available upload all matter. Re-encoding gives you control over a target profile but uses CPU; stream-copy avoids re-encoding but only makes sense when the source streams and container are compatible with YouTube ingest.
YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health. A low-motion devotional image may be visually acceptable at a lower bitrate than fast-moving footage, but that is an encoding judgment, not a guarantee of ingest acceptance.
Example FFmpeg command for a combined video file
This is an illustrative pattern for one file containing both picture and sound, not a tested Raspberry Pi command or a platform-certified profile. Replace the RTMPS placeholder with the current endpoint and key from Live Control Room; adapt the codecs, dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, and mapping to your file and measured hardware capacity.

The example’s 2.5 Mbps video setting is one illustrative point within YouTube’s stated 720p30 range, not a universal recommendation. The command assumes an FFmpeg build with the named encoders and a source that can be handled as shown. For separate audio and visual inputs, add the appropriate input options and explicit stream mapping instead of reusing this command unchanged. Protect credentials in a restricted configuration or environment rather than a shared script or public shell history.
Test before making the stream public
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the picture is correct and that the devotional audio is present, intelligible, and not clipping. Listen for silence, unexpected tracks, and loop-boundary gaps.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm playback on the intended watch page before using the final go-live control or public visibility setting.
- Measure upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth 20% above the total streaming bitrate. Include audio and account for connection variability; a 2.5 Mbps video stream therefore requires materially more than 2.5 Mbps of stable upload.
- Run the exact source and settings for a representative duration. Watch local CPU load, temperature, dropped frames, storage availability, remote playback, and network stability. Decide how you will restart FFmpeg after a power or connection failure.
These are practical checks for your own system, not official Raspberry Pi hardware requirements or a promise of uptime. The available Pi example is a community report from around 2022 and does not establish current model capability. No particular Pi generation should be assumed to sustain a given encode profile without measurement.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming stream in Live Control Room | Wrong endpoint, stream key, protocol, port, or an unavailable RTMPS connection | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room; verify the host and path and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the required connection. |
| Video arrives but audio is missing or wrong | The source layout or automatic stream selection does not match the file | Inspect the inputs and explicitly map the intended audio and video streams. Test the exact combination before going live. |
| Playback stutters or stream health degrades | Upload lacks headroom, or the board cannot sustain the selected encode workload | Check stable upload capacity against total output bitrate, reduce the output demands, or use compatible pre-encoded media with stream-copy. Measure CPU load and dropped frames. |
| The loop does not repeat as expected | -stream_loop is in the wrong position, applies to a different input, or the playlist contains incompatible media |
Place the option before its input, confirm installed FFmpeg behavior, and validate the assembled source and transitions locally. |
| The stream is interrupted after starting | YouTube detected third-party content or another ingest/connection problem occurred | Review Live Control Room messages and the rights status of every asset. Licensed content may still need channel allowlisting through Content ID; contact the relevant rights owner. |
| The stream stops after a restart or power/network loss | The process has no supervision or recovery plan | Plan and test how FFmpeg will be restarted and how the stream will reconnect. Verify recovery in a controlled test before relying on continuous operation. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Raspberry Pi for a YouTube live stream?
A Raspberry Pi is a plausible host, but the available community example does not establish capability for current boards or any particular encode profile. Test the exact media, FFmpeg build, settings, and duration on your own hardware.
How do I loop a video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg?
For a local file, use FFmpeg’s input loop option, commonly -stream_loop -1 before the applicable -i, and pace file playback with -re. Confirm behavior in your installed build and test before going public.
