Run Valheim Dedicated Server on a computer or hosted instance that stays powered, connected to the internet, and running the server process. Install it from Steam’s Tools library, copy the supplied Windows start_headless_server.bat or Linux start_server.sh before editing, then launch it with a world name, password, port, and visibility setting. Your friends can then enter the persistent world even when your normal Valheim game client is closed.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
For the Steam backend, forward the configured port and the next port (the defaults are 2456 and 2457) through the router and host firewall. For supported non-Steam players, add -crossplay; the PlayFab relay makes the server reachable without router port forwarding. Keep the world files on a deliberate data path, retain the automatic rolling backups, and copy those files to a separate location so a failed machine does not take every recovery point with it.

What a permanent Valheim server actually is
A dedicated server is a separate Valheim server process, not the multiplayer session created when one player opens the game and acts as host. The process loads a named world, accepts connections, saves that world, and remains available while the host machine is running. Iron Gate describes this as a way to provide “a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.”
That permanence has a practical condition: something must remain powered, connected, and able to restart the process. A desktop in your home, a small always-on computer, or a managed game-server instance can fill that role. If the machine sleeps, loses power, shuts down for updates, or stops the server process, the world is unavailable until service is restored.

Choose a hosting arrangement
| Factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cost | No hosting subscription is established by the official documentation; you provide the hardware, electricity, and internet connection. | A recurring hosting bill is expected, but the official sources do not publish universal prices or endorse a provider. |
| Initial setup | You install the server, edit its launch script, configure the operating system, and, for Steam networking, configure the router and firewall. | The provider normally supplies a control panel or preconfigured instance; exact setup varies by service. |
| Maintenance | You handle operating-system updates, server updates, process restarts, power, security, and backups. | The provider may operate the machine, but the division of responsibility for updates, saves, and restores must be checked in its terms. |
| File and mod control | You have direct access to world files and the server installation. | Access depends on the host’s file tools and policies; the official Valheim sources do not rank or compare hosts. |
| Network exposure | Steam-backend play normally requires forwarding two ports. Crossplay uses a relay and avoids that router-forwarding step. | The host’s network is managed for you, but its support for Steam, crossplay, mods, and custom ports must be verified separately. |
| Backups and recovery | You choose where to copy the world and how to retain an additional offline or separately mounted copy. | Backup frequency, retention, download access, and restore procedures are service-specific and are not established by Iron Gate’s documentation. |
| Crossplay | Use -crossplay for supported non-Steam players. |
Crossplay depends on whether the managed service exposes and supports the same server option. |
Self-hosting gives the clearest control over files and configuration, while a managed service exchanges that control for less machine administration. Neither option is automatically “24/7”: availability still depends on the process, the host’s power and network, and a recovery plan.
Install Valheim Dedicated Server
Steam installation on Windows
- Open Steam and switch to the Library view.
- Use the library filter to show Tools, then install Valheim Dedicated Server.
- Open the installed server folder and locate
start_headless_server.bat. - Make a copy of that file with your own name, such as
start_my_valheim.bat. Edit the copy, not the supplied original. Steam updates can replace or reset the original script. - Keep the copied script in the server folder so its relative paths continue to work, unless you deliberately rewrite those paths.
Steam installation on Linux
- Install Valheim Dedicated Server through Steam’s Tools library or the SteamCMD-based installation you already use for your Linux host.
- Find the supplied
start_server.shscript. - Copy it before making changes, because an update can restore the vendor version.
- Give the copied script execute permission and run that copy from the server directory. The exact permission command depends on your distribution and account policy; the important operational requirement is that the account running it can read the server files and write the save directory.
Microsoft Store installation
Microsoft Store users launch the server from the installed Server folder with StartHeadlessServer.bat. Iron Gate’s crossplay FAQ directs Microsoft Store users to the manual included with that installation. Do not assume the Steam folder layout or script name applies to the Microsoft Store edition.

Build the launch configuration
The supplied scripts provide the executable and baseline flags. Your copy should contain the documented server arguments that describe the instance. A practical configuration uses the following values:
| Argument | Purpose | Example or default |
|---|---|---|
-name |
The name players see when finding the server. | -name "My Realm" |
-port |
The network port assigned to this server. | -port 2456 is the documented default. |
-world |
The world save to load or create. | -world "MyWorld" |
-password |
The password required to enter. | Choose a private value and do not publish it. |
-public |
Controls whether the server appears in the public browser. | -public 1 lists it; -public 0 hides it. |
-crossplay |
Uses the crossplay backend and PlayFab relay. | Add the flag when supported non-Steam platforms must join. |
-savedir |
Moves world and permission data to a chosen directory. | Use a dedicated data or backup volume rather than relying on an overlooked default path. |
-saveinterval |
Sets how often the server saves. | -saveinterval 1800 means 1,800 seconds, or 30 minutes. |
-backups |
Sets the number of automatic backups retained under the backup policy. | -backups 4 is the documented default. |
-backupshort |
Sets the short backup interval. | -backupshort 7200 means 7,200 seconds, or 2 hours. |
-backuplong |
Sets the long backup interval. | -backuplong 43200 means 43,200 seconds, or 12 hours. |
Keep the quotation marks around names that contain spaces. Replace the sample world name with a stable identifier; changing it later points the server at a different save rather than renaming the existing world. Keep the password out of public posts, screenshots, and shared configuration files.

Public browser or private access
Use -public 1 when players should find the instance in the server browser. Use -public 0 when you want it hidden and intend to provide the address or join code directly. Hiding a listing does not replace a password or other access control.
Steam-only launch example
In the copied script, combine the documented arguments in one launch line, for example:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
-name "My Realm" -port 2456 -world "MyWorld" -password "choose-a-private-password" -public 1
Leave the executable, headless, and batch-mode portions supplied by the official script intact. The example above is the argument portion; the surrounding command differs between the Windows batch file and the Linux shell script.
Crossplay launch example
For supported non-Steam players, add -crossplay to the same argument set:

-name "My Realm" -port 2456 -world "MyWorld" -password "choose-a-private-password" -public 1 -crossplay
The port still identifies the server instance, but the relay changes how outside players reach it. You should not forward router ports solely because the command includes a port value when the server is using the crossplay backend.
Configure networking for the Steam backend
Iron Gate documents two consecutive ports for the Steam backend: the configured port and that port plus one. With the default setting, forward 2456 and 2457 from the router to the local address of the machine running the server. Apply matching inbound rules in the host operating system’s firewall.
- Give the server machine a stable address on your local network so a router rule does not point at a different device after a lease change.
- Leave
-port 2456in the launch configuration unless you have a reason to choose another value. - Create router forwarding entries for
2456and2457, directing each to the server machine. - Allow the same server traffic through the machine’s firewall.
- Start the server and test from a network outside your home connection. A test made only from the host’s own network can miss an internet-facing forwarding error.
If you change the configured port to another number, forward that number and the immediately following port instead of continuing to use the defaults. Do not expose unrelated administrative services just to make Valheim reachable.
Use crossplay for supported non-Steam platforms
Add -crossplay when players on supported non-Steam platforms need to join. Iron Gate states that the PlayFab relay carries the server traffic, so the server does not require router port forwarding to be accessible outside the local network. The server’s configured port remains part of its identity even though the relay handles the external path.

Crossplay does not make every platform a server host. Iron Gate’s 2025 FAQ says an Xbox console cannot set up a dedicated server, although an Xbox player can join a dedicated server when crossplay is enabled. The always-on machine must therefore be a supported computer or hosting instance; the console is a client.

Browser or direct access
With -public 1, players can search for the server name in the browser. With -public 0, give players the required address or code and the password. A hidden server is useful for a private group, but every player still needs the correct backend, address method, and password.
Join-code flow
Iron Gate’s FAQ documents a join-code method: start the dedicated server, open the pause menu to copy the join code, and have the other player paste it under Join Game → Add server. This is particularly useful when the group is using the crossplay backend and you do not want to distribute a changing network address.

- Choose a destination that is not the same physical disk or mount as the live world when possible.
- Copy the world data and permission files on a schedule that matches the value of the world to your group.
- Keep at least one copy offline or separately mounted so a disk failure, accidental deletion, or damaging process cannot remove the live files and every backup together.
- Before restoring, stop the server process and preserve the current directory as a separate snapshot. Replace the damaged world with a known-good copy, then start the server and verify the world before allowing everyone back in.
The built-in rolling backups are useful for recent mistakes, but they remain on the host unless you copy them elsewhere. A second location is an operational safeguard, not a feature that the default settings provide automatically.
Operate the server continuously
Power and connectivity
The host must stay awake and connected. Disable sleep on a self-hosted machine, keep the server on a reliable wired or wireless connection, and account for brief power interruptions. A UPS can keep the machine running long enough to ride through a short outage; its capacity and runtime must be matched to your hardware rather than assumed.
Process supervision
Run the copied script through the operating system’s service or process-management facility so it can be started after boot and restarted after an unexpected exit. Record where the script, executable, save directory, and log output live. Test a controlled stop and restart before inviting players, and verify that the same world name loads rather than creating a new world.
Updates and maintenance windows
Steam updates can reset the supplied launch script, which is why the editable copy matters. Apply server updates during an announced maintenance window, stop the process cleanly, confirm that the world files and external backup are current, then start the copied configuration again. Do not silently replace a working script and discover the change only when players cannot connect.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Players cannot connect on Steam
- Confirm that the server process is still running and that it loaded the intended world.
- Check that the router forwards both the configured port and port plus one; with defaults, that is
2456and2457. - Check the host firewall for matching inbound rules.
- Verify that the forwarding target is still the server machine’s current local address.
- Confirm that players are using the correct server name, address method, and password.
Crossplay players cannot join
- Confirm that
-crossplayis present in the copied launch configuration and that the server was restarted after adding it. - Use the documented join-code route: copy the code from the pause menu and enter it through Join Game → Add server.
- Do not assume that a Steam-only configuration will accept Xbox or other supported non-Steam clients.
The world appears to have rolled back
- Check the save interval and the time of the last successful save.
- Inspect the rolling backups before overwriting anything.
- Compare the live directory with your separate copy; a host-local backup cannot help if the host’s storage is damaged.
- Restore only after stopping the server, and preserve the damaged files for later inspection.
The server stopped after a reboot or update
- Start the copied script manually and read its output for a path, permission, or argument error.
- Make sure the service manager launches the copied file rather than the vendor script that an update may have reset.
- Confirm that the save directory is writable by the account used for the unattended process.
Limits of the official guidance
Iron Gate’s published material gives the launch arguments, default ports, save locations, backup controls, and platform behavior described here. It does not provide a universal CPU, memory, storage, or bandwidth sizing table, uptime guarantee, hosting-provider ranking, price list, or affiliate terms. Size a machine for the number of players and mods you actually intend to run, then monitor it under your own workload instead of treating an unverified specification as a promise.
