First enable live streaming, obtain the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, then test a modest output setting and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before going live.
What you need before building the pipeline
- A prerecorded video file and an old PC that can read it.
- A working internet connection with sustained upload capacity above the stream’s chosen bitrate.
- GStreamer installed with the elements required to read and decode your file, encode audio and video, mux the output for RTMP, and send it to YouTube. The documented

The title does not establish your PC’s operating system, CPU or GPU, GStreamer release, plugins, video codecs, or connection speed. Those determine the actual pipeline and what quality it can sustain, so test on the machine rather than assuming an old PC can handle a particular resolution.
Get the YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
- Open the stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream.
- Use the RTMPS URL shown by Live Control Room if your installed GStreamer sink supports the required secure transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which sends RTMP over TLS/SSL; its Live Control Room provides a lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube: Use an encoder to go live
- Do not assume that entering an RTMPS address into an ordinary
rtmp://sink makes the connection secure or compatible. Verify that your sink and its installed version support the transport YouTube provides.
Build and test a GStreamer pipeline
A pipeline for this job needs to read the prerecorded file, decode it as necessary, encode its video and audio in formats accepted by YouTube, mux the encoded streams for RTMP, and send them to the ingest address with your stream key. GStreamer documents an RTMP sink for sending encoded FLV video over RTMP, but that documentation alone does not identify the correct file-reading, decoder, encoder, muxer, or RTMPS setup for your computer.
Before using a pipeline, confirm that the necessary elements are installed and check the input file’s codecs. Match the encoder and output format to both your GStreamer plugins and YouTube’s current ingest settings. Avoid copying a command for a different OS or plugin set without checking each element and the sink’s secure-transport support.

- Choose a modest resolution and frame rate that you expect the old PC to encode steadily. If available, use an encoder supported by your installed hardware; otherwise test the software encoder at a lower setting.
- Configure the video and audio encoders, output muxing, and sink for the chosen YouTube ingest address and key. Use the stream key only in a location you can keep private.
- Start the pipeline and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that picture and sound are present and review the stream health before clicking Go live. YouTube’s workflow separates sending the encoder feed from starting the broadcast in Live Control Room.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not only a still frame or silent opening. Monitor stream health during the broadcast.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant-bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. These figures are YouTube ingest guidance, not measurements of Indian broadband or mobile networks. Compare the selected bitrate with your connection’s sustained upload capacity, leave room for ordinary fluctuations, and test at the exact setting you plan to use. If the preview or stream health shows trouble, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again rather than relying on a brief speed test.
Preflight checks and common problems
- Live streaming is unavailable: enable it in YouTube Studio in advance; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- GStreamer reports a missing element: the required plugin may not be installed, or the command may expect a different GStreamer version. Check the local installation and use elements available on that machine.
- The file will not play through the pipeline: inspect its codecs and ensure the required demuxer and decoders are installed. A pipeline written for a different file format may not work.
- YouTube receives no feed or rejects the connection: verify the stream URL and key, confirm the selected ingest transport, and make sure the sink supports RTMPS if you used YouTube’s secure URL.
- Video or audio is missing: check that both streams are decoded, encoded in a supported format, and included in the muxed output. Confirm picture and sound in the Control Room preview before going live.
- The old PC falls behind or the feed becomes unstable: lower the output resolution or frame rate and test again; no specific setting can be guaranteed without the PC’s hardware and a representative run.
- Upload interruptions or poor stream health: check sustained upload capacity against the chosen bitrate and reduce the bitrate if needed. Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event.
YouTube playback, copyright, and archiving
Sending a prerecorded file as a live encoder feed does not remove YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules. Use material you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s policies for copyrighted material and reused content before broadcasting.
