You can broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event from a headless Ubuntu server by sending the file through an encoder to the event’s ingest URL and stream key. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, configure an encoder on Ubuntu, then verify the incoming preview and start the event. YouTube’s official guidance covers the Live Control Room workflow and encoder settings; it does not provide an Ubuntu-specific FFmpeg install command or a tested command for looping a file, so those details depend on the encoder and deployment you choose.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. Eligibility can depend on the account’s current state, so check the requirements shown in YouTube Studio.
- A prerecorded video file that you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder running on the Ubuntu server that can read the file and send a live feed to YouTube.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule the event and retrieve its stream URL and stream key.
- A reliable server upload connection with capacity for the selected video bitrate, and a way to check the event remotely in Live Control Room.
The server does not create or publish the YouTube event by itself: Live Control Room manages the event, while the encoder sends its feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one for the intended time.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s configuration.
- If your encoder supports RTMPS, get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room’s stream settings. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingest; do not assume the default displayed URL uses RTMPS.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that lets the encoder send a feed to your event. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or copyable public command. If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder.
See YouTube’s guidance on managing live stream settings for stream keys and auto-start/auto-stop controls.
Configure an encoder on Ubuntu
Install and configure a software encoder that can read your video file and send it to the YouTube ingest endpoint. Keep the URL and key in a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your server rather than publishing them in scripts or logs. The exact installation steps, encoder flags, file-loop behavior, and service supervision depend on the encoder and Ubuntu release. YouTube’s encoder instructions do not specify an Ubuntu package version or an FFmpeg command, so verify those details against the current documentation for your chosen encoder and operating system before deploying.

At a high level, the encoder must take the prerecorded file as its input, encode or pass through compatible audio and video, and transmit a continuous feed to the event’s stream URL using its key. Confirm that the encoder supports your selected ingest protocol—prefer RTMPS where supported—and determine whether it will stop at the end of the file or repeat it. Do not assume a file will loop or that a process will restart after a failure unless you configure and test that behavior.
Choose resolution, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, a maximum of 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Use settings supported by your encoder and source media, and make sure the server’s sustained upload capacity can handle the selected bitrate. YouTube’s table is guidance, not a measurement of your server’s performance.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Ingest | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Use the secure URL from Live Control Room if the encoder supports RTMPS. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. | Choose a codec the encoder supports and that fits the event’s target resolution and frame rate. |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps. | Match the intended output and source; avoid selecting a rate the encoder or server cannot sustain. |
| Rate control | CBR. | Check the encoder is configured for constant bitrate and test the feed before the event. |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds. | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly and confirm its units and interpretation in that encoder’s documentation. |
| H.264 bitrate example | For 1080p at 30 fps, 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, according to YouTube’s settings table; its publication date is not shown. | Allow sufficient stable upload capacity for the chosen bitrate, including network variation. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3. | Check that audio is present, intelligible, and synchronized in the remote preview. |
For the full codec and resolution tables, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Start the encoder, verify the preview, and go live
- Start the encoder on the server and confirm that it is sending to the correct event URL with the matching stream key.
- Open that event in Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming video preview rather than assuming that a running encoder means the event is ready.
- For a scheduled stream, check the preview and then select Go live in Live Control Room. You can enable auto-start and auto-stop in stream settings if you want the encoder to control those stages; verify the behavior on a test event before relying on it.
- Check that the event is reachable from its channel or watch page and on a mobile device. Monitor both picture and sound during the stream. A headless server has no local desktop preview, so use the remote Live Control Room for the checks it provides.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring before and during a live stream. Its advice is collected in YouTube live streaming tips.

End the stream and check the archive
When the broadcast is finished, end the event using the controls appropriate to your configuration, then confirm that the encoder has stopped sending. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the event dashboard for the final state and archive, especially if the stream runs longer than 12 hours.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | Whether the encoder is running, the event’s URL and key match, and the selected protocol is supported. | Recheck the stream settings in Live Control Room, replace any exposed or reset key in the encoder, and confirm RTMPS support before using its URL. |
| Preview appears but the scheduled event is not public | Whether the event is still waiting for the scheduled-stream start step. | Wait for the preview and select Go live, unless you have configured and tested auto-start. |
| Video stalls or quality is inconsistent | Whether the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate and the encoder is maintaining CBR. | Test the connection and lower the output bitrate or resolution if the server cannot reliably sustain the current settings. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | The encoder’s audio input, selected AAC or MP3 output, and the remote preview. | Correct the encoder’s audio configuration and test a short event before the intended broadcast. |
| Broadcast stops when the file ends | The encoder’s configured input behavior at end-of-file. | Configure repeat behavior if the encoder supports it, then test it; do not assume the file loops automatically. |
| Stream does not resume after a disconnect | The encoder process, server network, event settings, and whether restart behavior was configured. | Check the process and reconnect using the same event’s valid credentials; test recovery behavior before an unattended run. |
Check copyright and YouTube policy before broadcasting
Having a video file does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast its music, footage, or other included material. Review the rights for every part of the recording and YouTube’s current rules before streaming. A live retransmission is still subject to YouTube’s policies; this workflow does not bypass copyright checks or guarantee monetization. Also distinguish a live event from an ordinary upload: using prerecorded footage as a live feed does not make the content original or resolve reused-content concerns.
