YouTube’s documented tools provide stream-health information in Live Control Room and status data through the YouTube Live Streaming API, but they do not document a native email alert for an encoder stream going offline. To receive email, monitor the authorized stream’s API status on your server, wait for a persistence threshold you choose, and send an alert through your own email service.
What to monitor: the incoming stream, not just the broadcast
YouTube distinguishes the incoming video feed from the viewer-facing live event. In the API, a liveStream represents the feed sent to YouTube; a liveBroadcast represents the event viewers watch. To detect whether YouTube is receiving encoder data, monitor the stream resource. Use broadcast state as context, so an intentionally ended event is not mistaken for an unexpected encoder outage. See the LiveStreams API resource, LiveBroadcasts API resource, and YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
The stream’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus answer different questions. streamStatus describes whether data is arriving or whether the stream is inactive or in an error state. healthStatus describes configuration health and can include issue severity and diagnostic details. Decide whether your alert should trigger on missing incoming data, serious health issues, or both, and make the email explicit about which condition occurred.
Set up email alerts with the YouTube Live Streaming API
-
Identify the stream resource
Find the YouTube
liveStreamassociated with the broadcast you want to monitor. The authorized LiveStreams: list method retrieves stream resources; request thestatuspart to receive status fields. The method’s authorization options include read-only YouTube access. Use an API client authorized to read the channel’s stream data.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Check status from a scheduled server task
Run a scheduled check on a server you control and inspect
status.streamStatus. YouTube definesactiveas receiving data through the stream, inactiveas not receiving data, anderroras an error condition. When useful, also inspectstatus.healthStatusand its configuration issues. The API documents these fields in the LiveStreams resource. -
Choose a persistence and recovery rule
Do not necessarily email on a single inactive or error result: a brief interruption or reconnect can create noise. For example, alert only after repeated checks show the condition, then send a recovery notice when the stream returns to
active. YouTube does not prescribe the check interval, number of repeated results, or recovery policy; choose them for your operation and validate the behavior against intentional stops and transient reconnects. -
Send the email through your own mail system
When your rule triggers, send the notification through your organization’s SMTP server or transactional-email service. Include the channel or stream identity, the associated broadcast if relevant, the last observed status, the observation time, and a link to the appropriate Live Control Room. Email delivery is something your monitor implements; it is not a behavior provided by the YouTube status API.
-
Use Live Control Room to diagnose the alert
YouTube says you can check stream health and analytics while streaming in Live Control Room. The dashboard checks the sent stream for errors and displays them beside the health indicator, including a timestamp and severity description. Use it to investigate what happened after your monitor reports an outage. See See your live stream’s metrics and Live streaming error messages.

Design the alert to avoid false alarms
- Separate feed loss from an ended event. An inactive input feed and a completed broadcast are not equivalent. Check broadcast context before labeling a planned end as an encoder outage.
- Say which signal triggered the notice. A missing-data alert based on
streamStatusis different from a configuration-health alert based onhealthStatus. - Include observation time and last status. This lets the operator distinguish an ongoing problem from a delayed or recovered event.
- Test planned stops and reconnects. Tune the persistence threshold and recovery behavior to the stream’s needs; YouTube does not provide a universal threshold.
Common problems and what to check
- No email arrives: Confirm the scheduled task is running, the API request is authorized and returning the
statuspart, and your mail provider accepts the message. The status endpoint does not send email for you. - An intentional end triggers an outage alert: Your rule may be treating stream inactivity as equivalent to broadcast completion. Check the associated broadcast state and suppress or classify planned endings appropriately.
- Brief reconnects generate repeated messages: Apply a persistence rule and send one alert per outage episode, with a separate recovery notice if useful. The appropriate threshold is an operational choice, not a YouTube-prescribed setting.
- The stream is active but has quality or setup warnings: Review
healthStatusas well asstreamStatus, then inspect the health indicator and timestamped errors in Live Control Room. - A webhook example appears to monitor YouTube: Check which service owns the stream being monitored. For example, Mux’s
video.live_stream.disconnectedwebhook describes a Mux live stream; that event alone does not establish monitoring of a YouTube stream. See the Mux webhook reference.
Keep a YouTube stream running without a home computer
If your underlying need is an always-on YouTube stream rather than building and operating your own server monitor, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera input. It does not replace the custom API-and-email monitoring method above.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Your video streams as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo to start the free day.
