Run MongoDB on a private address, expose only the OpenVPN listener to the internet, and require MongoDB authentication and TLS after the VPN connection is established. Docker supplies isolation and repeatable deployment, while OpenVPN supplies an authenticated route to the database; neither layer replaces the other.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What the secure design looks like
The safest general pattern is a two-layer boundary. MongoDB listens on a private host address or an internal Docker network and has no public 27017/tcp mapping. OpenVPN runs on a host with a public IP address or DNS name, accepts the VPN connection, and routes only an approved private subnet toward MongoDB. A host firewall then permits database traffic only from the VPN interface or VPN client subnet.

This follows MongoDB’s guidance to ensure that only trusted hosts can reach a deployment, and the OpenVPN database pattern of removing the database port from the public internet. A client must pass the VPN’s identity checks, the network firewall, MongoDB’s authentication, and MongoDB’s authorization before it can read or write data.
What each layer protects
| Layer | Purpose | What it does not provide |
|---|---|---|
| Docker networking | Keeps the database on an internal network and makes the deployment reproducible. | It is not a firewall by itself and does not authenticate database users. |
| OpenVPN | Creates an encrypted, authenticated path into the private network. | It does not grant MongoDB roles or protect a database account whose password was stolen. |
| Host firewall and security groups | Limit which interfaces, source networks, and ports can connect. | They do not identify an individual MongoDB user. |
| MongoDB authentication and authorization | Require a database identity and enforce least-privilege roles. | They do not hide an exposed port or replace network segmentation. |
| MongoDB TLS | Encrypts MongoDB traffic and authenticates certificates when configured for mutual TLS. | It does not decide whether a VPN client should be allowed onto the network. |
Plan the topology before deploying
Use a private address range that does not overlap with the networks commonly used by your clients. The documentation examples used by OpenVPN are reserved examples, not values to copy into production. Choose real ranges for your environment, document them, and make sure the VPN client pool, the MongoDB network, and users’ local networks cannot collide.

Recommended placement
- Place MongoDB on a private host or an internal Docker network. Do not publish port 27017 in a Docker
ports:section. - Place OpenVPN on a host that can reach the MongoDB private address. It may be a separate machine or a carefully isolated container on the same host.
- Expose only the OpenVPN listener and any administration interface that must be reachable. Restrict administration by source address or a separate management network.
- Route only the database subnet through the VPN rather than sending every client packet through the server.
- Create a VPN group, such as
db-access, for people or service accounts that genuinely need database connectivity.
Decide whether MongoDB and OpenVPN share a host
Separate hosts give you a smaller blast radius: a compromise of the VPN host does not automatically expose the database filesystem. A single host is simpler and can work for a small deployment, but the Docker daemon, host kernel, VPN container, and database container then share one security boundary. If you colocate them, use separate networks, strict firewall rules, protected secrets, and a maintenance plan that covers every component.
Prerequisites and secret handling
- A patched Linux host with Docker Engine and a host firewall or cloud security group.
- A public DNS name or stable public IP for the OpenVPN endpoint.
- A private route from the VPN host to the MongoDB address and a non-overlapping VPN client subnet.
- Persistent volumes for MongoDB data, OpenVPN configuration, certificate authorities, and issued certificates.
- A method for storing passwords and private keys as secrets, with file permissions that prevent ordinary users and unrelated containers from reading them.
- Backups tested by restoring into an isolated environment.
Protect the Docker daemon socket and any remote Docker API. Docker documents that access to the daemon can provide powerful control over the host, so do not mount the socket into containers unless there is a specific, reviewed need. If the daemon is remotely reachable, require mutually authenticated TLS and restrict the management network.
Deploy MongoDB without a public port
The following Compose fragment illustrates the important properties. Pin an approved MongoDB image version or digest instead of relying on a floating tag, and adapt paths to your host. The example intentionally has no host-port mapping for 27017.

An internal Docker network prevents ordinary external access, but it is not sufficient when the VPN runs on another host. In that case, bind MongoDB to the private host address or a private interface reachable from the VPN route, and enforce the same restriction with the host firewall. Do not use --bind_ip_all without compensating firewall rules; it makes the process listen on every container interface.
Initialize the first administrator safely
- Start MongoDB on the private network only.
- Connect from the host or an application container over the internal network, not from the public internet.
- Create a unique administrator in the
admindatabase. Use a long, randomly generated password stored outside the Compose file. - Create separate application users with only the roles they need on their application database. Do not use the administrator account in an application connection string.
- After confirming authentication works, remove any temporary bootstrap credentials and rotate the password if it appeared in shell history or logs.

Use SCRAM for normal MongoDB Community deployments when password authentication is appropriate. A service should have its own database user, and separate services should not share credentials. Grant read-only, read-write, or narrowly scoped custom roles according to the operation the service performs.
Run OpenVPN in Docker with the required capabilities
OpenVPN needs to create a tunnel device and alter network routing. OpenVPN Access Server’s Docker procedure therefore requires Docker Engine, the NET_ADMIN and MKNOD capabilities, and the host’s /dev/net/tun device. Persist the server configuration, certificate authority, issued certificates, and accounting data on a protected volume.

The volume path and image tag must match the OpenVPN distribution’s current documentation; do not substitute an untrusted image. Keep the container on a network that can reach the MongoDB private address, and publish only the documented VPN listener. If an administration web interface is enabled, bind it to a management address or restrict it with a firewall rather than exposing it broadly.
Configure private-subnet routing
- Create a VPN client address pool that does not overlap with the MongoDB subnet or common client LANs.
- Add a route for only the MongoDB private subnet. Avoid a default-route push unless all client traffic is intentionally inspected by the VPN host.
- Enable forwarding between the VPN interface and the MongoDB interface on the host or router.
- Allow forwarding only from the VPN pool to the specific MongoDB address and destination port 27017.
- Assign access to the
db-accessgroup or equivalent policy group. Users outside that group should receive no route to the database subnet. - Confirm return routing. MongoDB’s host must know how to send replies back to the VPN client pool, either through a static route or controlled source NAT on the VPN gateway.
Use the actual private ranges from your network plan. The tutorial examples in OpenVPN documentation are reserved documentation networks and must be replaced before deployment.
Firewall rules that enforce VPN-only access
At the cloud or edge firewall, allow the OpenVPN listener from the internet and deny inbound 27017 from every public source. On the MongoDB host, permit 27017 only from the VPN interface or VPN client subnet. If MongoDB and OpenVPN share a Docker host, apply rules to the host’s forwarding path as well as the container network; Docker can create forwarding rules that differ from the host’s ordinary input policy.

A rule should express all of the following conditions: the correct input interface, the approved VPN source range, the MongoDB destination address, and TCP port 27017. Place a final deny rule after the specific allow rule, and log denied attempts at a rate that will not flood the host. Review cloud security groups, host firewall rules, Docker network rules, and any upstream firewall together; an allow in one layer does not override a deny in another.
Do not mistake a listening socket for proof of exposure
Check the effective state from outside the VPN. A port scan or connection attempt from an unrelated external network should not complete on 27017. The same test from an authorized VPN client should reach the private address, then fail with an authentication error if no valid MongoDB credentials are supplied. That distinction proves that network reachability and database identity are separate controls.
Keep MongoDB authentication and TLS enabled
A VPN encrypts the path between the client and VPN endpoint, but traffic may traverse another host, bridge, router, or container network after it enters the private network. MongoDB states that TLS encrypts all MongoDB network traffic and supports strong ciphers with a minimum 128-bit key length. Keep TLS enabled for client connections and for internal replica-set traffic where your topology requires it.

Server certificate configuration
- Issue the server certificate from a CA trusted by the clients.
- Include every DNS name or IP address that clients use in the certificate’s subject alternative names.
- Store the private key in a root-owned, minimally readable file or secret.
- Configure a required-TLS mode after testing clients, and reject plaintext connections.
- Set certificate expiry monitoring and a renewal procedure before deployment.
- Require hostname validation in client connection strings where the driver supports it.
Do not disable certificate verification merely to make a connection succeed. A verification failure usually means the client is using the wrong CA, a name absent from the certificate, an expired certificate, or a clock that is incorrect.
Choosing MongoDB authentication
SCRAM is the practical choice for many self-managed installations: the client presents a database username and password over a TLS-protected connection, and MongoDB evaluates its assigned roles. X.509 authentication can eliminate passwords for suitably managed clients, but it has stricter prerequisites. MongoDB requires TLS, a common CA for client and server certificates, valid non-expired certificates, and correct serverAuth and clientAuth extended-key-usage settings.

Keep VPN identity separate from MongoDB identity. Revoking a VPN certificate should remove network access without forcing a password change for every database user, while disabling a database account should not require reissuing VPN certificates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the deployment from both sides of the boundary
- From the MongoDB host, verify that
mongodlistens only on the intended private address and that no public Docker port is published. - From an authorized VPN client, confirm that the private MongoDB address is reachable on TCP 27017.
- Connect with TLS and a test account whose role is intentionally limited. Verify that permitted operations succeed and forbidden operations fail.
- Disconnect the VPN and repeat the connection attempt. It should fail before MongoDB authentication.
- From an unrelated external network, test the public IP for 27017. It must not establish a TCP session.
- Inspect VPN, firewall, Docker, and MongoDB logs for the successful and rejected attempts. Ensure passwords, private keys, and full connection strings are not written to logs.
- Test certificate renewal in a staging environment and confirm that clients reject an expired or incorrectly named certificate.
Useful diagnostic distinctions
| Symptom | Likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout before VPN connection | Public firewall, DNS, or VPN listener | Confirm the listener is published and the edge rule allows its documented protocol and port. |
| VPN connects but private address is unreachable | Routing or forwarding | Check the pushed route, interface forwarding, and return route to the VPN client pool. |
| Private address reaches a closed port | MongoDB bind address, Docker network, or host firewall | Inspect the listening address, container attachment, and source-based 27017 rule. |
| TLS hostname or trust error | Certificate chain, SAN, expiry, or client clock | Verify the CA file, requested hostname, certificate dates, and system time. |
| Authentication failed after TLS succeeds | Username, password, authentication database, or mechanism | Check the user’s database, SCRAM mechanism, and secret version without printing credentials. |
| Authorization denied after login | MongoDB role assignment | Inspect the user’s roles and test with the least-privilege account intended for the application. |
Self-hosted container or administration-focused distribution?
Both approaches can implement VPN-only MongoDB access. The important difference is how much operational work you accept and where policy is managed.
| Concern | Self-hosted OpenVPN container | Administration-focused OpenVPN distribution |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | More manual work for certificates, users, routes, firewall rules, and upgrades. | Provides a documented Docker deployment and a web administration workflow. |
| User and group management | Often assembled from configuration files, scripts, or an external identity system. | Offers centralized user and group administration; a group such as db-access can control the private route. |
| Certificate lifecycle | You own issuance, revocation, renewal, and backup procedures. | Administrative tooling can simplify those tasks, but you still must monitor expiry and protect the CA. |
| Private-subnet routing | Flexible, but every route and forwarding rule is your responsibility. | Policy screens can make route assignment easier; verify the generated firewall behavior. |
| Logging | You choose log storage, retention, alerting, and review. | Central administration may improve visibility, but logs still need protected storage and retention rules. |
| Patching | You patch the image, Docker Engine, host, and configuration yourself. | The distribution may streamline upgrades, while the host, Docker Engine, and MongoDB remain your responsibility. |
| Exposure | Usually one VPN listener plus any deliberately restricted management endpoint. | VPN and administration endpoints both require explicit firewall restrictions. |
| Cost | Infrastructure and administrator time; software costs depend on the chosen distribution. | Infrastructure plus any applicable distribution licensing or user-tier terms, which can change over time. |
Choose the self-hosted route when your team already operates certificate authorities, configuration management, and monitoring. Choose an administration-focused distribution when consistent user/group workflows and a supported management interface reduce the chance of configuration mistakes. In either case, retain MongoDB authentication, authorization, TLS, and host hardening.
Quick Recap
Hardening and ongoing operations
- Bind
mongodonly to localhost, a private interface, or the Docker address required by the application. Never bind publicly as a substitute for authentication and firewalling. - Use unique MongoDB users, narrowly scoped roles, and separate credentials for applications, administrators, backups, and monitoring.
- Store VPN keys, MongoDB certificates, private keys, and passwords as secrets with restrictive ownership and permissions.
- Protect the host, kernel, Docker Engine, and daemon socket. A database can be secure while the host that controls its container is not.
- Patch the host, Docker Engine, OpenVPN image, and MongoDB image on a defined schedule. Test image upgrades against a restored backup.
- Collect and review VPN, firewall, Docker, and MongoDB authentication logs. MongoDB’s security checklist recommends retaining logs for forensic analysis.
- Alert on repeated VPN failures, unexpected database authentication failures, certificate expiry, and changes to firewall or route policy.
- Back up the database and the VPN configuration separately. Encrypt backups, restrict restore privileges, and rehearse revocation and recovery.
- Remove VPN access promptly when a user leaves or a device is lost. Rotate database credentials independently when a database secret may have been exposed.
Incident response when a VPN account is compromised
- Revoke the affected VPN certificate or disable the account and remove it from every database-access group.
- Review VPN connection logs, source addresses, routes assigned, and MongoDB authentication logs for the account’s activity.
- Disable or rotate any MongoDB credentials that may have been used from the compromised device.
- Check for changes to Docker volumes, images, firewall rules, certificates, and user roles.
- Preserve relevant logs, then restore a known-good configuration if unauthorized changes are found.
- Issue new credentials only after the endpoint is patched, the cause is understood, and least-privilege access has been revalidated.
Deployment checklist
- MongoDB has no public 27017 mapping and listens only on the required private interface.
- The public firewall exposes only the documented OpenVPN listener and restricted administration paths.
- The VPN client pool, MongoDB subnet, and common client networks do not overlap.
- Only the approved group receives a route to the MongoDB subnet.
- Host forwarding and return routes are explicit and limited to the required destination and port.
- MongoDB authentication, least-privilege roles, and TLS are enabled and tested.
- X.509 certificates, when used, have a common CA, valid dates, correct extended-key usages, and matching names.
- The OpenVPN container has
NET_ADMIN,MKNOD, and/dev/net/tunonly because they are required, and its data volume is protected. - The Docker daemon socket, host credentials, and secret files are not exposed to untrusted containers or users.
- An external non-VPN test cannot establish a MongoDB connection, while an authorized VPN test can connect only with valid database credentials.
