Yes—you can keep example.com on its current host while running WordPress at blog.example.com on a different server. Create a DNS record for the subdomain that targets the second server, configure that server to answer for the hostname, install TLS, and set WordPress to use the final HTTPS address. Your main domain’s DNS records and hosting do not need to move.

DNS chooses where requests go; it does not configure the web server or WordPress. The destination must have a virtual host or server block, the correct document root, PHP and rewrite handling, a certificate for the subdomain, and (if applicable) proxy headers that preserve the original host and scheme.

How the arrangement works

A visitor requests https://blog.example.com. The authoritative DNS provider returns the address of the second server. That server matches the blog.example.com host name, loads the WordPress files from its document root, runs PHP, and applies WordPress rewrite rules. The existing records for example.com, www.example.com, mail, and other services remain unchanged unless you deliberately edit them.

WordPress describes the two required mappings this way: you must configure DNS “to map the domain name to the server’s IP address” and configure the server “to map the domain name to the WordPress installation directory.” A DNS change without a matching virtual host commonly produces a default hosting page, a certificate warning, or a 404.

Choose a separate WordPress site or Multisite

Decide the ownership and operating model before changing DNS. The subdomain can host an independent single-site installation, or it can be a site inside an existing WordPress Multisite network.

Decision factor Separate single-site installation WordPress Multisite
Ownership and administration Best when the blog has its own owner, administrators, deployment schedule, or host. Best when one organization intentionally administers all sites as one network.
Core, plugins, and themes Core, plugins, themes, and updates are independent of the main site. Sites share WordPress core files and network administration; network-level plugins and themes can affect multiple sites.
Data boundaries Separate database and file backup set. Each site has separate database tables and media directories, but the network remains operationally coupled.
Updates and maintenance The blog can be updated, restored, or paused without changing the main site. Network administrators coordinate updates and permissions for every site.
DNS and hostname work Point the subdomain to the server hosting that installation. Map the subdomain to the network and add the site address in network administration; every mapped hostname still needs DNS and a matching virtual host.
Migration and rollback Move or roll back the blog without moving the main site. Migration is more involved because stored network addresses, mapped sites, cookies, and shared files must remain consistent.

Choose a separate install when the blog is independently hosted, backed up, updated, or owned. Choose Multisite only when shared network administration is an intentional requirement; a subsite does not automatically share content with other sites.

Pick the DNS record

Record Use it when Important limitation
A The second server has a stable public IPv4 address. If the address changes, you must update DNS before the old address stops working.
CNAME Your DNS provider permits a subdomain alias and the destination provider supplies a hostname. Use the provider’s supported target; a CNAME points to a hostname, not an IPv4 address, and provider restrictions vary at the zone apex and for certain services.
Wildcard Many subdomains should resolve to the same destination, such as a network that creates sites dynamically. It increases the operational blast radius: an unintended hostname can reach the same server. A wildcard does not replace virtual-host, certificate, or WordPress configuration.

For a single blog with a fixed address, an A record is usually the clearest choice. For a provider-managed endpoint, use its documented CNAME target. Use a wildcard only when you actually need multiple hostnames; WordPress’s example is *.example.com A 192.0.2.1 together with an Apache ServerAlias *.example.com.

Implementation: point the subdomain to the other server

1. Inventory the current site

  • Record the authoritative DNS provider and current records for the main domain.
  • Confirm that the destination server has a stable public endpoint and that its firewall permits HTTP and HTTPS.
  • Decide whether you are installing a new blog or moving an existing WordPress site.
  • Take a full file and database backup before changing URLs, importing data, or switching traffic.

Do not alter the main domain’s A, CNAME, MX, or other records merely to add the blog. You need to add one hostname-specific record.

2. Create the DNS record

  1. Open the DNS management panel at the authoritative provider.
  2. Add a record whose name is blog (the panel may display the complete name as blog.example.com).
  3. Choose A for a fixed IP, or the provider-supported CNAME option for a hostname target.
  4. Set the value exactly as supplied by the destination host. Keep the existing TTL unless you have a documented reason to change it.
  5. Save the record and allow caches to expire. Check the result from more than one independent resolver rather than relying on one local cache.

During propagation, some users may still receive an old cached answer while others reach the new server. Do not begin a content migration on the assumption that every resolver has updated at the same moment.

3. Configure the destination web server

Add blog.example.com to the destination server’s virtual host (Apache) or server_name (Nginx). Point that host at the WordPress document root, enable PHP handling, and enable the rewrite rules WordPress needs for “pretty” permalinks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An Apache host must include the blog name in its ServerName or ServerAlias and use the directory containing index.php. An Nginx server block must list blog.example.com in server_name, set its root to that same directory, pass PHP files to the configured PHP-FPM socket, and route unknown paths to /index.php. Exact directives differ by operating system and PHP version, so apply the syntax supplied by your server provider and reload the service after validating its configuration.

Before WordPress is involved, request the hostname and confirm that the intended virtual host answers. If a default site appears, the hostname is missing from the virtual-host configuration or the request is landing on the wrong server.

4. Install or move WordPress

For a new blog, install WordPress in the destination document root and create its database and database user there. For an existing blog, copy the files and import the database, then verify permissions, uploads, scheduled tasks, and any environment-specific settings. Keep the backup until the new site has passed all tests.

If the installation was previously available at another address, plan a controlled URL replacement. WordPress stores absolute URLs in settings, content, serialized values, and sometimes plugin data. Use a WordPress-aware migration or search-and-replace method that preserves serialized data; do not run an unqualified text replacement over the database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Issue TLS for the subdomain

Obtain a certificate whose names cover blog.example.com. A certificate for example.com alone does not necessarily cover the subdomain, while a wildcard certificate covers only the names permitted by its scope. Configure the certificate and private key on the destination server, then redirect HTTP requests to HTTPS.

Test the HTTPS virtual host directly before enabling a permanent redirect. A redirect loop or certificate warning at this stage usually means the certificate is attached to the wrong virtual host, the DNS record still points elsewhere, or a proxy is terminating TLS without forwarding the correct scheme.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

6. Set WordPress’s public URLs

In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings → General and set both WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) to https://blog.example.com. Save once the HTTPS virtual host is working. If you cannot reach the dashboard, the same values can be defined in wp-config.php temporarily, or corrected in the database with a careful, backup-first procedure.

Use the final HTTPS hostname consistently. Mixing an old hostname, an HTTP URL, and the new HTTPS URL causes canonical redirects, login-cookie failures, duplicate media addresses, and incorrect sitemap links.

7. Handle a reverse proxy or CDN, if present

A reverse proxy is optional. When one sits between visitors and WordPress, it must pass the original host and scheme. WordPress’s reverse-proxy documentation notes that a proxy can overwrite HTTP_HOST; where that occurs, the installation must use the documented SERVER_NAME or HTTP_X_FORWARDED_HOST approach for the proxy’s header arrangement.

Configure the proxy to forward the host blog.example.com and to identify the original HTTPS request. Configure WordPress and the web server to trust those headers only from the proxy you control. If the proxy reports HTTP while the browser used HTTPS, WordPress may continually redirect to HTTPS; if it substitutes another host, generated links and canonical tags can point to the wrong domain.

Multisite-specific setup

If the blog is a subsite in an existing network, complete the network setup rather than creating a second, unrelated installation. The network’s domain and server must already be reachable, and the new hostname must resolve to the server hosting that network. WordPress states that all domains to be used should already be mapped to the DNS server.

  1. Create the DNS record for blog.example.com and wait for it to resolve.
  2. Add the site in Network Admin → Sites → Add New, using the intended site address and administrator email.
  3. If the hostname is mapped separately from the network’s native address, use a supported domain-mapping configuration and ensure the mapped address is stored for that site.
  4. Configure the web server and TLS certificate for the mapped hostname, not only for the network’s original domain.
  5. Review network settings, site URL values, media paths, login cookies, and rewrite rules for every mapped site.

Changing SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL or rewrite rules alone does not migrate existing site addresses or configure DNS, virtual hosts, TLS certificates, redirects, and cookies. Treat those as separate tasks and back up the complete network before editing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the finished blog

Run these checks from a private browser window and, where possible, from a second network:

  • DNS: The blog hostname resolves to the intended destination, while the main domain still resolves to its original host.
  • Host selection: The destination serves the blog rather than a default page or another customer’s virtual host.
  • TLS: HTTPS presents a valid certificate for the exact hostname and HTTP redirects once to the HTTPS URL.
  • Front end: The home page, category pages, search, pagination, and a sample post load without mixed-content warnings.
  • Permalinks: Open a post URL, save a permalink setting if necessary, and confirm that it does not return a server 404.
  • Media: Upload a new image and open an older image; both URLs should use the blog’s HTTPS hostname.
  • Login and cookies: Log in, log out, and confirm that the session remains on the blog hostname without redirecting to the main site.
  • Administration: Dashboard screens, plugin and theme pages, the media library, and the editor load over HTTPS.
  • REST API and feeds: Check the REST endpoint, RSS feed, and any application that publishes through the API.
  • Scheduled work: Confirm WP-Cron or the server’s scheduled task runs and that backups complete on the destination host.
  • Discovery: Inspect canonical tags, sitemap URLs, and robots directives for the correct subdomain.
  • Multisite: Visit every mapped site and verify that each has the intended address, media directory, login behavior, and certificate.

Diagnose common failures

Symptom Likely cause Correction
DNS lookup returns the old host Propagation or resolver caching, or the record was added at a non-authoritative provider. Verify the authoritative nameservers, query multiple resolvers, and wait for the previous TTL to expire.
Default hosting page appears The destination virtual host does not include blog.example.com, or DNS points to the wrong server. Correct the record and the server’s host matching, then reload the web server.
Certificate warning No certificate covers the subdomain, or TLS is attached to another virtual host. Issue or install a certificate for the exact hostname and bind it to the HTTPS host.
Every post URL is a 404 Rewrite handling is disabled or the document root is wrong. Enable the WordPress rewrite configuration, allow the required overrides, and resave permalinks.
Redirect loop between HTTP and HTTPS The proxy reports the wrong scheme, or both proxy and origin enforce conflicting redirects. Forward the original scheme, configure trusted forwarded headers, and keep one clear HTTP-to-HTTPS policy.
Links point to the main domain or an old address WordPress Address, Site Address, or stored content still contains the former URL. Correct the two General Settings URLs and perform a serialized-data-safe URL replacement where required.
Login repeatedly fails Cookie domain, HTTPS detection, or proxy host handling is inconsistent. Use one canonical HTTPS hostname, remove conflicting cookie settings, and correct host and scheme forwarding.
Images work in the editor but not publicly Uploads or generated URLs still reference the former host, or file permissions prevent access. Check upload paths, permissions, media URLs, and the site’s stored address.
Only one mapped Multisite site works Other hostnames lack DNS, virtual-host entries, certificates, or correct stored addresses. Repeat the complete DNS, server, TLS, and WordPress mapping for each site.

Operations after launch

Backups and recovery

Back up the blog’s database, wp-content, configuration, uploads, and web-server settings on the destination host. Test restoring those backups independently of the main site. For Multisite, preserve the network database and every site’s media directory; a single-site backup is not a complete network recovery plan.

Updates and ownership

Assign responsibility for WordPress core, PHP, plugins, themes, TLS renewal, DNS changes, monitoring, and security response. A separate installation makes those duties independent. In Multisite, network administrators must consider the effect of an update or plugin activation on every site.

Future moves

Keep DNS TTL and migration timing in your runbook. To move the blog later, prepare the new server and certificate, copy files and database, test with the hostname before switching traffic where your tools allow, then change only the subdomain record. After propagation, verify the same front-end, login, API, media, and administrative checks before removing the old server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical decision summary

  • Use an A record for one blog on a stable IP; use a provider-supported CNAME when the destination is a hostname; reserve a wildcard for deliberate multi-subdomain designs.
  • Use a separate WordPress installation when the blog is independently owned, managed, backed up, or hosted.
  • Use Multisite when shared network administration and shared core files are intentional, not merely because the URL is a subdomain.
  • Remember that DNS is only the first layer: virtual host, document root, PHP, rewrites, TLS, WordPress URLs, and proxy headers must all agree on the same HTTPS hostname.

The Bottom Line

Leave the main domain where it is, create a DNS record only for blog.example.com, configure the second server and its certificate for that hostname, and set both WordPress URLs to the final HTTPS address. Choose Multisite only for a deliberately shared network; otherwise, an independent installation provides cleaner ownership, backups, updates, and rollback.
