How to Run a YouTube 24/7 Playlist Schedule with Windows Task Scheduler

Task Scheduler can launch a YouTube playlist encoder at a chosen time, on sign-in, or after startup. Here’s how to configure the task, test the stream, and understand what it takes to keep it running.

You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch a YouTube playlist stream at a chosen time, when you sign in, or after a restart—but Task Scheduler only starts the encoder or script. YouTube Studio creates the live event and supplies its connection details; the encoder plays your playlist and sends the video to YouTube. A genuine 24/7 stream also depends on Windows, the encoder, your playlist source, power, and internet connection staying available.

What you need before scheduling a YouTube playlist stream

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  • A Windows PC that can stay on and connected for the intended streaming period.
  • An encoder or script that can play or receive your chosen playlist and send it to YouTube. Task Scheduler does not play media or configure a playlist.
  • A playlist source the encoder can access, such as local media files or a supported network source.
  • A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: don’t share it, post it in screenshots, or leave it in a publicly accessible script.

Encoder playlist setup and command-line syntax depend on the software you choose; there is no universal Windows command that schedules every encoder and playlist. YouTube lists software and standalone hardware encoders in its encoder overview, but no single vendor is established as the best choice for every workflow.

Create the YouTube live event and get its connection details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a live stream or schedule an event for the time you want. YouTube’s current steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. In the stream’s connection settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Keep the key private. YouTube lets you create or reset stream keys in Live Control Room; if a key may have been exposed or the encoder won’t connect, use YouTube’s current stream-key troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Choose the playlist behavior in the encoder: for example, play files in sequence or repeat the playlist if the encoder supports looping. Confirm the encoder’s settings and test playback before scheduling it.
  4. Where your encoder supports it, select RTMPS. YouTube describes it as RTMP transported over TLS/SSL and recommends it for encrypted transport. Check the encoder’s own documentation to confirm support.

Choose the right Task Scheduler trigger

Task Scheduler runs a selected program when a trigger’s conditions are met; it does not guarantee that the program will keep streaming. Microsoft documents time-based, boot, and logon triggers in its Task Scheduler trigger reference.

Trigger Use it when Important limitation
At a scheduled time You want the encoder to start at a specific date and time. The PC must be running and able to execute the task then.
At startup You want the encoder to launch after Windows starts. An encoder that needs an interactive desktop may not work as expected in a boot-started session. Test the actual PC and encoder.
At log on The encoder expects a signed-in Windows desktop. The task waits for the specified user to sign in; it does not start the encoder merely because the PC boots.

If the encoder needs an interactive desktop, use a logon trigger rather than assuming a boot trigger will provide one. If Windows needs time to bring up the network or mount storage after sign-in, you can add a delay, but the right delay depends on your PC and network; verify it on the target machine.

Set up the task to launch the encoder

  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler and choose the option to create a task. Exact wording and layout can vary across Windows versions.
  2. Give the task a clear name, such as “YouTube playlist stream.” Select a trigger that matches your plan: a scheduled time, system startup, or user logon.
  3. Add an action that starts the encoder executable, or starts the batch file or script that launches it. Set the program path and any arguments using that encoder’s documentation; do not assume command-line options are interchangeable between encoders.
  4. If the playlist or script is on a network location, confirm that it is accessible under the account and trigger context used by the task. If your encoder needs a signed-in desktop, configure the task to run for that user at logon.
  5. Save the task and test it with Task Scheduler’s Run action or the encoder’s own test procedure. Confirm that the encoder opens, reads the playlist, and connects to the intended YouTube event.

A stream key embedded in a script or command can be exposed through shared files, screenshots, or logs. Keep scripts private and avoid posting connection details when asking for help.

Configure and test the outgoing stream

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codec options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Choose only settings your encoder supports and your upload connection can sustain.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate: Check the recommended bitrate for your selected resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current encoder settings page. Test the available upload capacity rather than choosing a rate that your connection cannot maintain.
  • Audio and motion: Test representative audio and scenes with movement. A static test image or silence may not reveal issues that appear in the actual playlist.
  • Transport: Use RTMPS when supported, and confirm the encoder is configured with the correct stream URL and key.

YouTube recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours before an event and starting at least 15 minutes ahead, so there is time to check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. These are operational recommendations, not guarantees that a stream will work. Check the watch page as well as the preview, and monitor audio and video quality. If you record a local archive, confirm that it is growing as expected.

What a scheduled task can—and cannot—keep running

A task can start an encoder; it cannot keep a stream healthy if Windows shuts down, the encoder exits, the playlist becomes unavailable, or the internet connection fails. YouTube advises monitoring stream health, and Microsoft’s trigger documentation describes when the task starts—not a guarantee of continuous streaming.

Sleep, power, and network interruptions

Task Scheduler has a WakeToRun setting that requests that the computer wake for a task. It does not prove that every PC’s sleep settings, firmware, or power configuration will wake reliably. Test your actual hardware and power settings. An optional UPS can help cover brief power loss, but it cannot fix internet, Windows, or encoder failures.

Tasks that run for days

Microsoft’s TaskSettings reference says a task is stopped 72 hours after it starts by default unless its ExecutionTimeLimit is changed. If the scheduled task itself remains active for days, check this setting; don’t assume the encoder process is exempt.

Long-stream archives

YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance. Do not rely on one automatic archive for a stream that runs longer than that. Check YouTube’s current guidance and plan any longer-run recording or archive needs separately.

Troubleshoot common scheduling and stream failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The task runs, but the encoder does not appear. The program path or action is wrong, or the encoder expects a signed-in desktop session. Run the encoder directly, verify the executable path and arguments, and use a logon trigger if it needs an interactive session.
The encoder opens but cannot connect to YouTube. The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the key may have been reset, or the encoder may not support the chosen transport. Confirm the event’s current connection details in Live Control Room, check RTMPS support and encoder settings, and follow YouTube’s current stream-key troubleshooting steps.
The stream starts but the playlist is missing or stops. The encoder may not be configured to loop or sequence the playlist, or the files or network source may not be accessible in the task’s account context. Test the playlist in the encoder itself and verify file paths, permissions, and source availability under the same Windows account.
The task does not start after a reboot. The selected trigger may be logon rather than startup, or Windows may not be reaching the expected state. Check the trigger and task history. Remember that a logon trigger requires the specified user to sign in.
The stream starts but has unstable video or audio. The upload connection may not sustain the selected settings, or the encoder may be configured with unsupported values. Test upload capacity, use supported codec and bitrate settings, verify the recommended keyframe interval, and monitor YouTube stream health.
The task stops after several days. The task may have reached its default execution time limit. Check the task’s ExecutionTimeLimit setting in Windows Task Scheduler.
