You can run a prerecorded playlist as a YouTube Live stream from a Google Compute Engine (GCE) Linux VM by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, running an encoder on the VM, and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. The VM can keep the encoder running without a home computer, but you are responsible for media playback, process recovery, monitoring, and ongoing cloud costs. YouTube’s official guidance covers stream setup and quality settings; it does not establish a particular FFmpeg playlist-loop command, so this guide avoids presenting unverified syntax as ready to run.
How the GCE livestream setup works
The workflow has three parts:
- YouTube Live Control Room: creates and controls the broadcast, and shows the incoming encoder preview.
- A GCE Linux VM: runs an encoder and reads media files that you are authorized to stream.
- RTMPS: carries the encoded video and audio from the VM to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint.
The encoder—not YouTube—must handle your chosen media source and make it play continuously. A YouTube playlist page is not automatically a direct media input for an encoder. Confirm that the selected software supports your file formats, playlist ordering, repeat behavior, and restart handling before building the broadcast around it.
1. Make sure the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Encoder streaming is one of YouTube’s supported ways to go live. Check the channel’s eligibility and restrictions before provisioning a VM, because a running encoder cannot bypass a channel-level restriction. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
2. Create the encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. The encoder needs both to connect to YouTube.
- Keep the stream key private: treat it like a password, do not commit it to public source control, and keep it out of screenshots or logs that others can access.
- After the encoder connects, inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room before starting the public broadcast. Confirm that both picture and sound are correct.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete archive; plan separately if you need to preserve or publish the whole run. YouTube: Stream using an encoder.

3. Create a Linux VM in Compute Engine
Choose a VM for the encoding work
Start with a Linux VM image supported by Compute Engine. Select its machine size only after deciding the output resolution, frame rate, and whether your chosen encoder will use software encoding. Those choices affect compute demand; a VM suitable for one stream configuration may not suit another. Google’s instructions cover creating a Linux VM from a public image: Create and start a Compute Engine instance.
Automate setup carefully
Compute Engine supports startup scripts supplied through instance metadata. They run as root when the VM boots and run only when network access is available. This can automate repeatable installation and process setup, but make scripts safe to rerun and protect any secrets they contain. Do not assume a startup script alone provides process supervision or proves that a stream is healthy. Run startup scripts.
Sending an encoder stream to YouTube is outbound traffic. Avoid opening inbound firewall ports unless you have a specific management or monitoring requirement; configure access for that need deliberately rather than exposing services by default. Compute Engine firewall rules control network traffic to VM instances: VPC firewall rules.

4. Configure media playback and the encoder
On the VM, the encoder needs access to the media files—stored locally or mounted from a location the VM can read—and must produce a continuous audio/video output. Configure it to connect to YouTube’s ingestion URL with the stream key from Live Control Room.
The exact playlist command depends on the encoder and how the media is stored. The official YouTube and Compute Engine instructions cited here do not document an FFmpeg playlist-loop command, so there is no safe universal command to copy. Before launching, verify the selected encoder’s current primary documentation for:
- Supported input formats and whether each file’s audio and video can be decoded.
- Playlist ordering, transitions or gaps, and how repeat or loop behavior is configured.
- What happens at end of file, on a missing or unreadable file, and after a network interruption.
- Whether the process can restart without leaving the stream stopped, and how audio continuity is maintained.
- How the encoder accepts the RTMPS destination and stream key without exposing the key.
Test with media you have the right to use. Do not treat a YouTube watch-page or playlist URL as a media file path unless the chosen encoder’s documentation explicitly supports that input.

5. Set quality, connect, and test before going live
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by both the encoder and VM, and consult YouTube’s current bitrate table rather than relying on a hard-coded setting that may not fit your output. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Leave upload capacity above the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom, so a stream should not consume all available outbound bandwidth. Test and monitor under conditions similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube encoder settings and YouTube streaming tips.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the incoming preview
- Start the encoder and confirm that it connects to the intended YouTube stream.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the expected media is playing, audio is present and intelligible, and the picture has the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Check stream health and the VM’s process and outbound network during a test run before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
- Start the public broadcast only after the preview and stream status are satisfactory.
6. Keep the stream operating and recover from interruptions
A VM reboot can leave an encoder stopped unless your setup starts it again. Use boot automation or a process supervisor appropriate to your encoder, and verify its behavior with a deliberate restart before depending on it. This is operational advice, not a claim that Compute Engine’s startup scripts supervise a process after launch.

When the stream is missing or interrupted, check the components in order:
- YouTube: Is the channel eligible, is the correct broadcast selected, and does Live Control Room show an incoming preview?
- Encoder: Is the process alive, reading the expected playlist, and using the correct ingestion URL and stream key?
- Media: Can the VM still read the files, and does playback advance and repeat as intended?
- Network: Is outbound connectivity available, and is there enough upload headroom for the configured bitrate?
- Audio and video: Are both tracks present and within the encoder settings YouTube supports?
For a broadcast longer than 12 hours, account for YouTube’s archive behavior rather than assuming a single complete archived video will be available. YouTube encoder streaming instructions.

| Symptom | Likely area | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | Channel access or encoder connection | Confirm livestream eligibility, that the intended stream is active in Live Control Room, and that the encoder has the matching stream URL and key. |
| Preview appears, but the wrong video plays | Playlist or media configuration | Check the encoder’s documented playlist order, file paths, and repeat settings; do not assume a YouTube playlist URL is a supported media input. |
| Video appears without sound | Media or encoding configuration | Verify the source file has an audio track, the encoder is including it, and the preview is monitored with sound enabled. |
| Stream health is unstable | VM capacity or network | Check VM load and outbound bandwidth; lower the chosen resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the VM or connection cannot sustain them, using YouTube’s current recommendations. |
| Stream stops after a VM restart | Boot or process recovery | Check that boot automation runs when expected and that the encoder is restarted; test recovery rather than assuming a boot script keeps the process supervised. |
| Broadcast runs but archive is incomplete | Archive duration | For streams longer than 12 hours, do not expect one complete automatic archive; arrange separate recording or preservation if the full run matters. |
7. Estimate GCE cost and choose VM availability
A continuous stream consumes compute and outbound networking for as long as it runs. Your bill also depends on region, VM family and size, disk, IP choices, and outbound data, so a useful estimate must use your actual configuration and current rates. Google publishes separate pricing information for Compute Engine and networking: Compute Engine pricing and Networking pricing.
