You can use a Raspberry Pi 5 to send prerecorded bhajan video to a YouTube livestream, but the Pi must play the video and encode a live stream while maintaining a reliable internet connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; for H.264 at 1080p30, its recommended bitrate is 5 Mbps. Those are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Pi, encoder setup, or connection will run all day. YouTube’s live encoder settings.

This guide covers the hardware and YouTube setup, the decisions you need to make about playback software, testing, rights, archiving, and troubleshooting. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe or verify a specific Pi looping command or software configuration, so treat the playback method below as a setup plan to validate on your own hardware—not a tested recipe.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi 5.
  • Boot media with an operating system installed, and a compatible power supply. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance lists these as prerequisites; it describes a case as optional and wired Ethernet as a possible network connection. Raspberry Pi setup guidance.
  • Your bhajan video files, stored somewhere the Pi can access. The sources cited here do not specify a required storage capacity.
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected output settings. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably sustain and testing before the broadcast. A wired connection is one option if available at the installation site.
  • Permission to livestream every part of the recording and visuals, including the composition, sound recording, and any images or footage.

Know the Pi 5’s encoding constraint

The Pi 5 can hardware-decode H.265 video, but that does not mean it has a hardware video encoder for creating a live stream. Raspberry Pi’s documentation states, “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Raspberry Pi camera documentation. A playback-and-encoding workload is different from simply playing a file, and the cited guidance does not establish Pi 5 performance, CPU load, or thermal behavior for any particular streaming application or all-day setup.

Choose playback and encoding software only after checking its current instructions for your operating system and confirming that it can loop your media, send a live feed to YouTube, and set the required output parameters. This guide does not provide an unverified FFmpeg command, OBS profile, desktop-player setting, or unattended-restart service as if it were validated.

Choose a stream length and output settings

Set the YouTube ingest parameters

Setting Starting point Qualification
Protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest.
Video codec H.264 YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingest. This is a YouTube capability, not confirmation that a particular Pi software setup can encode each format.
Video bitrate 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 YouTube’s recommendation, not a measured minimum or stability guarantee. Select a quality your connection can reliably sustain.
Rate control CBR YouTube specifies constant bitrate.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Both are supported by YouTube’s ingest guidance.

See YouTube’s live encoder settings for its current guidance. Lower resolution or bitrate may be a sensible choice if your measured upload capacity cannot sustain the intended output. The cited guidance does not give a Pi-specific upload reserve; avoid treating a speed-test result as proof that the stream will remain healthy under real conditions.

Decide whether to stay under 12 hours

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer broadcast will be saved as one complete archive. If a single archive matters, plan a stream shorter than 12 hours and confirm the result in YouTube Studio. For a longer all-day broadcast, check the Live Control Room and archive status rather than assuming YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted video.

Set up playback and YouTube ingest

  1. Install and boot the operating system. Prepare boot media, connect the Pi 5 to its power supply, and confirm the system can access the bhajan files and the internet. A case is optional in Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance; no particular cooling product or all-day thermal profile is established for this workload.
  2. Prepare a repeatable playback-and-encoder setup. Select software with current documentation for your operating system. Configure it to play the intended video or playlist repeatedly and encode/send a live feed using the output settings you chose. Verify that audio stays in sync and that the loop transitions as intended. No exact loop command or Pi-specific streaming configuration is established by the cited sources.
  3. Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Locate the server URL and stream key in the encoder setup details. The key is a credential: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s encoder setup workflow.
  4. Enter the ingest details into your encoder. Add YouTube’s server URL and the stream key to the software you selected. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio format. Check that the configured values match the profile you intend to send.
  5. Start sending a private or unlisted test. Use the same bhajan media, playback loop, resolution, frame rate, audio, network path, and approximate duration planned for the public broadcast. This is a precaution based on YouTube’s advice to test similar audio and movement and monitor health, not a reported Pi test.
  6. Check the preview before going live. In Live Control Room, confirm that video and audio arrive correctly and inspect stream health and messages. If the preview or health indicators show a problem, fix it before starting the public broadcast.
  7. Monitor the live stream. Keep the Live Control Room available and watch stream health and messages. YouTube may report problems even when local playback appears normal; do not assume the Pi’s screen alone shows what viewers receive.

Protect rights and understand monetization limits

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the creator to have the rights needed to use the live content, including music licensing rights. Check permissions for the underlying composition, the specific sound recording, and all video or artwork, for the intended territories and uses. A bhajan’s age or devotional subject does not by itself establish that a particular recording or visual is free to use. YouTube Terms of Service.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed third-party content may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel. Resolve that with the rights holder before relying on the material in a long broadcast. Permission to use music is not a promise of monetization. YouTube’s channel-level monetization policies separately address reused content and repetitive or mass-produced material, which it calls “inauthentic content” in a policy clarification dated July 15, 2025. YouTube says monetization requires original, authentic content; a music license alone does not establish that a channel or stream qualifies. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom What to check Next step
No preview in Live Control Room Whether the encoder is sending, and whether the server URL and stream key were entered correctly. Recheck the ingest details in YouTube Studio and the encoder; start sending again and wait for the preview.
Stream health warning or unstable video Whether the connection can reliably sustain the selected bitrate and whether the encoder is using CBR and the intended settings. Test a lower output quality or bitrate, then run another test and monitor stream health. YouTube’s 5 Mbps H.264 1080p30 figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee.
Black screen, wrong video, or a loop that stops Whether the selected software is reading the intended file or playlist and whether repeat playback is configured as intended. Confirm the media path and playback behavior locally, then retest through YouTube’s preview. A particular Pi looping command is not established here.
Audio missing, out of sync, or interrupted The encoder’s audio source and supported output format, plus playback behavior at file transitions. Check the selected AAC or MP3 audio output and run an end-to-end test using the intended loop before going public.
Copyright warning or interruption Whether every music and visual element is covered by permissions and whether the rights holder requires channel allowlisting. Stop using the disputed material until permissions and any allowlisting are resolved; a license does not prevent all automated interruptions.
Archive missing or incomplete after a long run Whether the stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic-archive behavior. Check the stream and archive status in YouTube Studio. Do not assume a broadcast longer than 12 hours will appear as one complete archive.
