You can run a YouTube radio-style livestream from a Mac mini with OBS Studio: create a YouTube Live event, add its stream URL and key in OBS, build a scene with your audio and visuals, then test the feed before going live. For a stream that should stay up around the clock, plan for monitoring, music rights, reconnects, and YouTube’s archive limit; a Mac mini and OBS do not remove those responsibilities.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. It must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- A Mac mini running macOS 13 or later for the current OBS Studio macOS download. OBS provides separate Intel and Apple Silicon installers; check your Mac’s processor and choose the matching one. - A sustained internet upload connection suited to the video bitrate you choose. There is no single resolution or bitrate that is right for every Mac mini or connection.
- Audio and visuals for the broadcast, plus permission to use the music in both a live stream and any replay you intend to keep.
OBS is free streaming software. Its system requirements caution that compatibility alone does not guarantee that a Mac can stream every combination of encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Set up the YouTube livestream
- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable live streaming if the channel has not used it before. Wait for activation before your broadcast date if this is the channel’s first stream. YouTube encoder setup instructions
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In Live Control Room, create a livestream using an encoder. Scheduling gives viewers a watch page in advance; an unscheduled stream is suitable when you do not need advance notice. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. The URL is the destination, while the key identifies your feed.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or a public stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if offered, and enter the stream key—or use the custom server option and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Build a simple radio scene and route audio
A radio-style stream can combine a static image, station title, now-playing text you update yourself, or a visualizer with the program audio. In OBS, add an image or other visual source to a scene, then add the audio source that matches how your playback is produced. Watch the OBS audio mixer while the program plays: its meters should move, and a test stream should let you confirm that the sound is audible and not distorted.
Mac system audio routing depends on the playback application and the specific macOS setup. Some workflows need an additional audio-routing application, but there is no one universal method established for every Mac mini. Validate the route with your actual player and confirm that OBS captures the intended audio—not silence, duplicate audio, or unrelated system sounds—before going live.

Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a starting point, then lower the load if your upload connection or Mac cannot sustain the test. For a radio stream with a still image, high frame rates or a high resolution may add load without improving the listening experience. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP(S), and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, YouTube’s recommended audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. - Transport: Prefer RTMPS unless you have a specific workflow that requires another protocol. YouTube describes HLS as a specialized option for certain codecs or HDR workflows, with higher latency; it adds complexity without a clear benefit for a typical radio stream.
- Rate control: Set CBR as YouTube recommends for encoder delivery.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and bitrate: Choose a modest, stable combination your sustained upload can handle. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate; a speed-test result does not guarantee that the connection will sustain the stream continuously.
- Audio: Select an accepted codec and verify channel layout and level in a test. Keep the mixer out of clipping and listen to the stream playback, not just the local source.
Test and monitor before leaving it running
- Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard, then run a private or otherwise appropriate test using audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check the image, audio, stream health, and any encoder warnings before going live.
- Confirm viewers can open the scheduled or live watch page from the channel and on a mobile device.
- If recording locally, confirm that the archive file is being written and growing. YouTube recommends a local recording as a backup.

An Ethernet connection can be convenient for a stationary Mac mini, but it is not a guaranteed fix for upload problems or a universal requirement. Check the exact Mac mini’s available port or adapter needs and your network equipment; measure whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate.

Plan music rights and the stream archive
Clear rights for live use and replay
Use only music whose license or other permission covers the intended YouTube live broadcast and any archived replay. Check the permitted territories, attribution rules, and live and replay conditions for each track, and keep records of the permission. Its licenses are track-specific; that availability does not establish that any particular track is licensed for continuous radio-style live use. Account for the 12-hour archive boundary
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams that exceed 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not rely on YouTube to preserve one uninterrupted archive. Plan session rotation below that boundary and keep an independent local recording if you need a backup, then test how the breaks and resulting archives appear to viewers. Choose between a scheduled stream and continuous operation
A scheduled, finite broadcast is simpler to prepare: viewers can see a watch page in advance, and you can start and end a defined session. Continuous operation has additional practical requirements: somebody or something must monitor the feed, recover from interruptions, manage session breaks around the archive limit, and preserve a local copy if needed. A hardware encoder is not required for the basic Mac mini method; OBS is a software encoder option. Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
- Confirm the channel has live streaming enabled and that initial activation is complete.
- Check that OBS is using the stream key and URL for the same event shown in Live Control Room. If a key was reset or exposed, update OBS with the current key.
- Verify OBS is actually streaming and review its output status and YouTube’s stream health messages.
The stream buffers or loses health
- Lower the video bitrate or resolution, then test again; the chosen bitrate must fit the sustained upload capacity, not just a brief speed-test peak.
- Check for network interruptions and competing upload use. A wired connection may help simplify a stationary setup, but does not guarantee a fix.
- Test the full scene and audio under realistic conditions before leaving the stream unattended.
The stream is silent or has the wrong audio
- Check that the intended OBS audio source is selected and its mixer meter moves during playback.
- Listen to a test stream and check for muted sources, duplicate capture, or unexpected system sounds.
- If capturing Mac system audio, verify the particular routing method for your playback application and macOS setup; a universal routing recipe cannot be assumed.
The archive is missing or incomplete
- Check the session duration: YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured.
- For longer programming, rotate sessions below the archive limit and make a local recording if you need an independent copy.
