You can run an always-on podcast stream from a Windows desktop by sending an encoder’s audio-and-video output to YouTube Live. First enable live streaming on your channel, then configure and test the encoder, check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and keep the computer, encoder, power and internet connection running. A single desktop setup is not inherently uninterrupted: any of those components can stop the feed.
Check that your channel can go live
Before setting up the desktop, confirm that your YouTube channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility guidance is at Get started with live streaming. Live content must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Choose the broadcast format
For a podcast stream with a designed visual, overlays or audio routed from other sources, use encoder streaming: the encoder sends the finished audio/video output to YouTube. YouTube recommends encoder streaming for broadcasts that use external audio equipment or a more elaborate production. Its Live Streaming API documentation, updated 2026-09-14, distinguishes the incoming media transmission (a “stream”) from the watchable video event (a “broadcast”) and describes a 24/7 feed as a use case.
That model allows a continuous feed; it does not guarantee that one Windows computer, encoder, power source or internet connection will remain available without interruption.

Set up and test the Windows encoder
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, follow YouTube’s live-stream setup flow and confirm that your channel is eligible before scheduling or starting the broadcast.
- Prepare your podcast output: Decide what viewers will see while they listen—for example, cover art, a visualizer or a camera view—and ensure the encoder receives the intended audio. If you use a microphone or preamp, check that it is selected as the audio source and that the level is clear without clipping.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube: Use YouTube’s encoder setup flow to obtain and enter the stream details. Treat the stream key as private; do not publish or share it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP.
- Choose quality for your connection: Set the encoder’s output quality to suit the available upload connection, rather than choosing a setting the connection cannot sustain. YouTube’s current guidance for encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The cited guidance does not establish a single Windows-specific configuration that suits every desktop and connection.
- Run a representative test: Test with the actual podcast audio and the kind of moving video or visual elements you expect to stream. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal, inspect the preview, and listen for problems such as silence, distortion or an unintended audio source.
- Start and monitor: Once the preview and output look and sound right, start the broadcast. Keep the encoder running and monitor YouTube’s stream health and audio/video quality while the feed is live. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring.
Continuous feed or shorter broadcasts?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. See Archive live streams. If preserving the full program matters, record a local backup; if you want a replay for each episode, use shorter broadcasts rather than relying on a multi-day archive.
Rights, reused material and monetization
Having permission to transmit material and qualifying for monetization are separate questions. Make sure you have the rights needed for the audio, video, music and other material in the stream, and follow YouTube’s platform rules.

YouTube’s monetization policies assess whether channel content is original and authentic, or instead repetitive, generic or mass-produced. Its reused-content rules consider whether reused material adds significant original commentary, substantial modification, or educational or entertainment value. A continuous loop does not by itself guarantee eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program; the review considers the channel and its content. YouTube’s policy page notes that on 2025-07-15 it clarified and renamed the former repetitious-content policy as “inauthentic content,” while treating reused content separately: YouTube channel monetization policies.
Equipment: start with what you have
A microphone is an optional part of an encoder setup when you need to capture spoken audio. A preamp may also be part of an audio chain. YouTube’s creator guidance says expensive equipment is not required to start: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” See Get started with live streaming. Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, the encoder is using the current stream details, and the stream key has not been mistyped or replaced. Keep the key private.
- The preview has no audio: Check that the encoder is capturing the intended microphone or other podcast audio source, then test again and listen in YouTube’s preview.
- The stream health is poor or the picture/audio breaks up: Check the upload connection and reduce output quality to a level it can sustain. Test with representative content and monitor stream health rather than assuming a successful start means the feed is stable.
- The live page is not a complete replay: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need the full program, or divide the show into shorter broadcasts.
- A continuous loop is not accepted for monetization: There is no guarantee based on loop duration or ownership alone. Review whether the channel’s material is original and adds meaningful commentary, modification, educational or entertainment value under YouTube’s policies.
