Choose how to keep the playlist running

YouTube describes encoder streaming as a route for gameplay, overlays, and external audio/video hardware. For prerecorded rotation, it also identifies cloud tools as an option. The right choice depends on whether you need production control or want playback to continue without a home computer.
Set up a YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming in advance. Verify the channel and confirm it has no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until launch time. See YouTube’s getting-started guidance.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and stream settings for the audience and recording block you plan to run. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
- Connect your encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it publicly, and reset it if you think someone else has obtained it.
- Prepare the playlist. Add the reviews and walkthroughs in the order you want them played, and check transitions and audio levels. Playlist design depends on your encoder or service; YouTube does not prescribe a particular rotation layout.
- Preview before going live. Check picture, sound, overlays, and the preview in Live Control Room. Test that the public watch page opens and that the audio is audible on another device. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring the stream; see its live-streaming tips.
- Start the encoder or cloud playback. Confirm that YouTube shows the incoming feed, then start the event. Keep monitoring picture and sound while it runs.
- Check the archive afterward. Open the channel’s Live tab in Studio to see whether YouTube created an archive, and review any copyright notices or claims.
Plan for the YouTube archive separately
A continuous live feed and a dependable replay are two different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete platform VOD is important, schedule shorter events under that threshold rather than relying on one uninterrupted broadcast. Consult YouTube’s archive guidance for the current policy.
- Start a new scheduled event for each shorter block if you want distinct watch pages and more reliable platform archives.
- Record a local copy as a backup, especially for reviews or walkthroughs with lasting value. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive; an external drive is an optional storage choice, not a YouTube requirement.
- After each block, check that the local file is growing and that the platform archive appears in Studio. Test playback on the watch page and on a mobile device.
Clear game footage and audio rights
Do not assume that permission to show gameplay automatically covers every soundtrack, promotional clip, or later archive use. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the creator to have the rights needed for both live and archived content. Review the publisher’s video policy and the terms for music or other third-party material in every recording.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can interrupt or terminate a live feed, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. If a rights holder has licensed material for your channel, YouTube says the channel may need to be allowlisted in Content ID to prevent interruptions. Read YouTube’s livestream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams.
Keep the stream observable
- Watch Live Control Room for feed status and preview, and check the public watch page rather than assuming that an encoder’s local preview proves viewers can see the stream.
- Monitor audio and video quality during playback, including after playlist transitions.
- For a local workflow, check the encoder, computer, power, and network. Any of these can fail and interrupt playback; YouTube’s guidance recommends monitoring but does not promise a failover system or uptime level.
- For a cloud workflow, check the service’s playback status and the YouTube watch page. Do not assume a cloud service removes the need to verify the outgoing stream.
