Video Bitrate for Streaming: How to Choose the Right Setting

There is no universal streaming bitrate. Use the destination platform’s recommendation for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then test that your connection and encoder can sustain it.

Choose your bitrate from the destination platform’s current recommendations for your codec, resolution and frame rate, then make sure your upload connection and encoder can sustain it. For YouTube Live, for example, the H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps; Twitch’s example for the same resolution and frame rate is 6,000 kbps. Those figures are platform-specific, not universal targets. A stable stream at a lower setting is better than one that repeatedly drops frames.

What bitrate should I use for streaming?

There is no single correct bitrate for every stream. Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second: raising it can preserve more picture detail, but also increases the upload bandwidth and encoder capacity required. Start with the current recommendation published by the platform you are streaming to, for the codec, resolution and frame rate you intend to use.

For YouTube Live, the English encoder-settings table recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Its AV1/H.265 recommendations for those same modes are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps, respectively. These are YouTube live-ingestion recommendations; YouTube may revise them, and they should not automatically be applied to another platform or codec. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table

For Twitch, the Broadcasting Guidelines give examples of 6,000 kbps at 1080p60 and 4,500 kbps at 1080p30. The difference between these examples and YouTube’s recommendations is one reason not to treat a bitrate as a universal setting. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines

Platform bitrate examples by resolution and frame rate

The following figures are platform recommendations or examples, not guarantees of quality or stability. YouTube values are live-ingestion recommendations from its English encoder table; Twitch values are examples in its Broadcasting Guidelines. YouTube’s table specifies the codec, while the Twitch examples below do not provide a codec-specific split.

Platform and codec Resolution and frame rate Recommended/example bitrate
YouTube Live, H.264 720p30 8 Mbps
YouTube Live, H.264 720p60 8 Mbps
YouTube Live, AV1/H.265 720p30 6 Mbps
YouTube Live, AV1/H.265 720p60 6 Mbps
Twitch 720p30 3,000 kbps
Twitch 720p60 4,500 kbps
YouTube Live, H.264 1080p30 14 Mbps
YouTube Live, H.264 1080p60 17 Mbps
YouTube Live, AV1/H.265 1080p30 10 Mbps
YouTube Live, AV1/H.265 1080p60 12 Mbps
Twitch 1080p30 4,500 kbps
Twitch 1080p60 6,000 kbps
YouTube Live, H.264 2160p60 (4K) 50 Mbps
YouTube Live, AV1/H.265 2160p60 (4K) 35 Mbps

These examples show why “1080p bitrate” is incomplete without a platform, codec and frame rate. YouTube’s table gives the specific codec-based recommendations above; Twitch’s listed examples should be read as Twitch guidance, not as a prediction of what YouTube or another service will accept or deliver.

How much upload speed do you need?

Your upload speed needs to exceed the configured video bitrate, leaving headroom for fluctuations and other network use. Twitch’s FAQ gives a rule of thumb: allow about 30% more upload speed than the stream bitrate. Its example says a 6 Mbps stream may need at least 8 Mbps of upload speed. This is a guideline, not a guarantee; other devices, network activity and the stability of the route to the platform also matter. Twitch’s streaming FAQ

Check your actual upload performance before the event rather than relying only on the speed advertised by your internet plan. If other people or devices share the connection, account for their traffic too. A bitrate that fits a speed test’s best result may still be too ambitious if upload performance varies.

Should you use CBR or VBR?

For YouTube Live, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Twitch also recommends CBR. With variable bitrate (VBR), the amount of data can spike as the video gets more complex. Twitch warns that those spikes can contribute to buffering, dropped frames or broadcast starvation on an unstable network route. For a live stream, a steady, sustainable rate is generally a safer choice than peaks your connection cannot carry.

Choose a resolution and frame rate your setup can sustain

Higher resolutions and frame rates generally require more bandwidth and more processing. The right setting depends not only on the platform table but also on what your encoder and connection can handle. Twitch notes that higher resolution needs more bitrate and higher frame rate needs more encoding power. Encoder choices also affect system load: its guidance contrasts x264’s CPU use with GPU encoding options. Twitch’s encoder and bitrate guidance

Live streaming bitrate is not upload encoding bitrate

A video-file upload and a live stream are different jobs. YouTube’s upload-encoding table is for files uploaded to YouTube, not for live ingestion. For SDR uploads, it lists 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). Use YouTube’s live encoder table when configuring a live stream. YouTube recommended upload encoding settings

Set your bitrate and test before going live

  1. Identify the destination and task. Decide whether you are streaming live or uploading a finished video, then use the matching platform guidance.
  2. Pick your output mode. Choose the resolution and frame rate appropriate to the content and intended viewers.
  3. Set the platform-recommended bitrate and codec. Follow the destination’s current table for that exact mode rather than borrowing a number from another platform.
  4. Check upload headroom and encoder load. Allow for other network activity and normal variation; confirm your computer can encode the chosen resolution and frame rate without struggling.
  5. Run a representative test. Include movement and audio similar to the planned stream. YouTube specifically advises testing with similar audio and movement before going live.
  6. Monitor stream health. Use the platform’s feedback during the event. Twitch recommends a network test before streaming and Twitch Inspector to review stream health.
  7. Adjust if the test is unstable. Lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then test again. Do not keep a high setting that causes dropped frames or buffering.

YouTube notes that it transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers, so the bitrate you send is not a promise that every viewer receives an identical stream. Its latency settings also involve a trade-off: lower latency can mean more playback buffering, and the appropriate choice depends on how much you interact with viewers. YouTube says 4K/2160p streams do not have its low-latency option. YouTube live stream settings and latency options

Common bitrate problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports instability or viewers buffer. The configured bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or network performance may be varying. Check other network use, test the connection and lower bitrate or output resolution if needed.
  • Dropped frames or encoder strain. The computer may not be keeping up with the selected encoding workload. Reduce resolution or frame rate, lower bitrate if the connection is also under pressure, and test the encoder again.
  • Picture looks poor despite a high bitrate. Check that you are using the correct platform and codec recommendation for the chosen mode. More bitrate cannot compensate indefinitely for an unsuitable resolution, encoder limitation or unstable connection.
  • Using the YouTube upload number for a live broadcast. Switch to YouTube’s live encoder recommendations; upload-file settings apply to a different process.
  • Bitrate spikes cause interruptions. Use CBR as recommended by YouTube and Twitch, and retest on the same network conditions you expect during the event.
