You can host an ARK: Survival Ascended dedicated server on Linux, but not with a native Linux executable. Studio Wildcard distributes the Windows server, so a Linux host must run ArkAscendedServer.exe through Proton or Wine. The practical choices are a managed application such as ARK Ascended Server Manager (AASM), a Docker image that bundles SteamCMD and GE-Proton, or a manual SteamCMD and systemd installation.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What running ASA on Linux actually means
ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) has no native Linux dedicated-server binary in the implementations documented for 2026. The server depot is Windows-only. On Linux, SteamCMD downloads that Windows depot and Proton or Wine supplies the compatibility layer that launches ArkAscendedServer.exe. This is different from many older ARK: Survival Evolved guides that describe a Linux server executable.

That distinction affects every part of the setup: you need a 64-bit Linux operating system, a Proton/Wine prefix, additional compatibility files, and a process supervisor that can restart the Windows program. AASM and the cited Docker image automate those pieces. A manual installation gives you more control, but you are responsible for updates, prefixes, service files, logs and backups.
Choose an operating model before installing
| Method | What it manages | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| AASM | SteamCMD installation, Proton prefix, server creation, scheduling, backups, Web UI and RCON management | Operators who want a guided setup and a graphical control panel | It is a separate application with its own licensing and less low-level control than hand-written services |
| Docker with GE-Proton | Container, SteamCMD and Proton download on first start, environment-based configuration and port mappings | Repeatable deployments, homelabs and administrators already comfortable with containers | You still administer Docker storage, networking, upgrades and container logs |
| Manual SteamCMD plus systemd | You download/update the depot and create the Proton/Wine launch and service configuration | Experienced Linux administrators who need custom scripts or unusual layouts | Most hands-on maintenance; backups, monitoring and update scheduling are not automatic |
All three methods run the same Windows server and therefore share the compatibility risk. Test one map and one external client before building a cluster. Adding more maps multiplies disk use, update time and the number of services that can fail.

Hardware and host requirements
Memory
Plan on at least 16 GB of RAM. Both the 2026 AASM guide and ferment9348’s Docker documentation identify 16 GB as the sensible floor; the Docker notes describe roughly 15 GB already installed and growing during operation. AASM recommends 32 GB when you run multiple servers or a complete cluster. Leave headroom for the operating system, Proton, Docker (if used), mods and filesystem cache.
Storage
Use SSD storage. ARK performs heavy random I/O while loading assets, saving worlds and processing mods, so a hard disk can turn joins, restarts and saves into long stalls. Reserve approximately 30–50 GB of free space per server before counting save archives, downloaded updates, staging files and mod data. A cluster needs more than simply multiplying the map count because each instance also has logs and backups.
Recommended Free Tools
CPU, architecture and network
- Use a supported 64-bit Linux distribution and a modern multi-core CPU.
- Choose a host with reliable upstream bandwidth and a public address, or configure port forwarding from your router.
- For consistent uptime, LinuxGSM recommends data-center hosting; a home connection can work, but carrier-grade NAT, changing addresses and power outages complicate access.
- Keep enough free disk and RAM for an update to unpack beside the existing installation. Updating with no staging space is a common cause of failed or partial installs.
Prepare Linux and your network
1. Create a dedicated account and directory
Run the server under a non-root account. Give that account ownership of the installation, saves, logs and backups, and keep the operating system and server data on a filesystem with sufficient free space. Do not place passwords directly in public shell history or shared configuration files.
2. Install the prerequisites for your method
AASM expects a graphical Linux desktop for its initial setup; after you configure its Web UI, the server can operate headlessly. Docker requires a working Docker Engine and persistent bind mounts or volumes for the server files and saves. A manual deployment needs SteamCMD, Proton or Wine, a 64-bit userland and a service manager such as systemd.
Install only the packages required by the method you selected, then update the host before downloading the ASA depot. Compatibility packages vary by distribution and Proton build, so follow the current instructions for your chosen manager rather than copying an ARK: Survival Evolved package list.

3. Open and forward the required ports
| Purpose | Protocol | Default port | When it is needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game traffic | UDP | 7777 | Players’ game connections |
| Peer traffic | UDP | 7778 | Server networking; keep it aligned with the instance configuration |
| Query | UDP | 27015 | Server browsers and query tools where applicable |
| RCON | TCP | 27020 | Remote administration, only if you enable it |
Permit the same traffic in the Linux firewall, then forward it from the router to the host or add it to the cloud security group. For a standard UFW installation, the rules follow this pattern:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallsudo ufw allow 7777/udp
sudo ufw allow 7778/udp
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp
sudo ufw allow 27020/tcp
Adjust the rules if you choose non-default ports or run several instances. Do not expose RCON to the entire internet when a VPN, private network or source-address restriction is available. If friends cannot see the server, check the host firewall, the router or security-group rule, the server’s bound address and whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT.
Install ASA with AASM
Why choose AASM
AASM is a native Linux management application. Its documented workflow installs the Windows ASA depot through SteamCMD, creates the Proton prefix, and exposes scheduling, backups, a Web UI and RCON management. It hides the Proton/Wine wiring that would otherwise be repeated in shell scripts.
Initial setup
- Install AASM on the 64-bit Linux desktop and start it under the dedicated server account.
- Choose a storage location with at least 30–50 GB free for the first server, plus additional capacity for saves, mods and backups.
- Create an ASA server profile and let AASM download or validate the server depot. The first installation can take considerably longer than later updates because both the game files and compatibility components may be prepared.
- Select the map identifier, server name, maximum players, administrator and server passwords, ports, mods and any crossplay option exposed by the current AASM release.
- Start the server from AASM, wait for the world to finish loading, and connect from a client outside the host’s local network.
- After the external connection succeeds, configure its maintenance cycle: automatic updates, restarts, health checks and rolling backups.
Use the Web UI for routine operations after the initial graphical setup. Keep one known-good backup before changing mods or major settings, and test restores on a separate directory rather than overwriting the live save.
Deploy the Docker and GE-Proton route
What the container provides
The documented image downloads SteamCMD and GE-Proton on its first start, installs the Windows depot and runs ArkAscendedServer.exe under GE-Proton. Persistent storage is essential: without a volume or bind mount, a container replacement can discard saves, configuration and downloaded content.

- Design your survivor, shape the trunk and tame, train, multiply and ride dinosaurs in a vivid ecosystem
- Public online mode for up to 70 players, private multiplayer mode for up to 8 players + local split screen for 2 players
Configuration variables
The image documents environment variables including:
SERVER_NAMEfor the public server name.MAPfor the ASA map identifier. The documentation usesTheIsland_WP, not the older ARK: Survival Evolved map name.MAX_PLAYERSfor the player limit.MODSfor the mod list.CROSSPLAYfor the documented crossplay setting.
Map names, variables and defaults can change with the image version. Read the image’s current configuration reference before deploying a second instance, and map each host port to a unique port when running multiple containers.
Container launch checklist
- Create a persistent data directory owned by the account or UID used by the container.
- Define the environment variables in an environment file that is readable only by the administrator.
- Publish UDP 7777, UDP 7778 and UDP 27015, plus TCP 27020 only when RCON is enabled and protected.
- Start the container and follow its first-run logs while SteamCMD downloads the depot and GE-Proton.
- Wait for the server process to report that it is listening before testing from an external client.
- Set a restart policy and schedule image, server and mod updates during a maintenance window.
Never assume that a container restart is a backup. The image documentation warns that ARK writes server and administrator passwords to ShooterGame.log in clear text. Restrict log permissions, avoid publishing logs publicly and rotate or delete old logs according to your retention policy.
Build a manual SteamCMD and systemd installation
Download and update the server
Install SteamCMD for your distribution, create a directory for the ASA depot and use SteamCMD’s anonymous or authorized installation workflow documented for the server. Run validation after an interrupted download and schedule updates during a maintenance window so players are not disconnected unexpectedly.

Launch through Proton or Wine
Create a dedicated Proton/Wine prefix for the server and keep it alongside the installation or in another documented persistent location. Your service must invoke the Windows executable through that prefix, pass the map and server settings, write logs to a known directory and use the intended working directory. Test the command interactively first; only then place it in a systemd unit.
Run it as a service
A systemd unit should run as the non-root server account, wait for the network, restart after an unexpected exit and stop cleanly during shutdown. Add separate timer units or cron jobs for updates and backups rather than updating while the live process is writing saves. Record the exact launch command and environment in administrator documentation so a replacement host can be rebuilt.
Before enabling automatic restarts, confirm that a failed Proton process does not leave a stale lock or child process. If a restart loops, stop the service, inspect the journal and Proton log, and correct the prefix or missing dependency before starting it again.

Identity and gameplay settings
- Give every instance a unique server name, especially when several maps share one public address.
- Set the ASA map identifier, maximum players, administrator password and player password in the manager, container environment or service configuration.
- Choose a non-default RCON port when practical and restrict access by firewall source address or private network.
- Add mods gradually. A single incompatible or unavailable mod can delay startup or prevent clients from joining.
- Enable crossplay only when it matches the platforms and access policy you intend to support.
Protect credentials and saves
ARK’s server logs can contain passwords in clear text. Treat the log directory as sensitive, use restrictive filesystem permissions and avoid sending full logs to public chat or issue trackers. Back up the save directory and configuration separately so you can restore a world even if a mod update or binary update fails.
Plan for more than one server
Use unique game, peer, query and RCON ports for each instance. AASM’s 32 GB recommendation for multiple servers or a full cluster is a useful planning baseline, not a performance guarantee. Increase memory and storage when player counts, mods or simultaneous maps grow, and monitor swap activity rather than assuming a server is healthy because its process remains running.

Operate the server: updates, restarts, backups and monitoring
Use maintenance windows
Schedule updates and restarts when players are least active. Download and validate the new depot before announcing downtime, then restart one instance at a time in a cluster. Keep the previous save and configuration until the new build has accepted connections.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Automate backups
Make daily or more frequent rolling backups of saves, configuration and mod lists. Store at least one copy outside the live server disk. Test a restore periodically; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Monitor health, not just process state
LinuxGSM’s ARK workflow documents operational patterns such as start, stop, restart, update, validate, backup, monitor, log viewing and cron scheduling. LinuxGSM’s page is explicitly for Survival Evolved, so treat those commands as an operations model and verify ASA compatibility before using its scripts.
At minimum, monitor process availability, listening ports, RAM, swap, disk space, update failures and backup age. Alert when free space falls below the amount needed for a second copy of the depot or when the last successful backup is older than your recovery objective.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server will not start
- Confirm that the Windows depot completed and passed validation.
- Check that Proton/Wine can access its prefix and that the service runs as the account that owns the files.
- Read the service journal and Proton log for missing libraries, permission errors or a stale process.
- Remove only temporary compatibility files after taking a backup; do not delete saves while troubleshooting.
Players cannot connect
- Verify UDP 7777 and 7778 on the host firewall and router or cloud security group.
- Check that the client is using the current public address and that the server is not bound only to localhost.
- Test from a network outside the host’s LAN to avoid misleading hairpin-NAT results.
- Confirm that the configured port matches the ASA
-port=argument and the forwarded port.
The server appears online but is unresponsive
- Inspect RAM, swap, CPU and disk latency during map loading and saves.
- Check whether a mod update is repeatedly failing or blocking startup.
- Ensure the disk is not full from logs, old depots or backups.
- Restart during a controlled window and validate the installation before inviting players back.
RCON is unsafe or unavailable
Confirm TCP 27020 is open only where required, the RCON password is set, and the firewall allows the administrator’s source address. If remote administration is not needed, disable RCON and close the port.

Which Linux approach should you use?
| Priority | Recommended direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest guided setup | AASM | It handles SteamCMD, Proton/Wine, scheduling, backups and Web UI configuration in one workflow. |
| Repeatable infrastructure | Docker with GE-Proton | Environment variables and persistent volumes make rebuilds predictable, provided you already manage containers. |
| Maximum customization | Manual SteamCMD and systemd | You control launch arguments, filesystem layout, timers and monitoring scripts. |
| Several maps or a cluster | AASM or a carefully automated container deployment | Port allocation, backups and coordinated maintenance become more important than a minimal install. |
| Highest uptime requirement | Data-center Linux host | LinuxGSM recommends data-center hosting for consistent uptime; verify ASA compatibility, bandwidth and provider policies before committing. |
Final pre-launch checklist
- 64-bit Linux host with at least 16 GB RAM, SSD storage and 30–50 GB free per server.
- 32 GB or more planned when operating multiple ASA servers or a full cluster.
- Windows ASA depot installed and launched through Proton or Wine.
- ASA map identifier and
-port=<port>syntax verified. - UDP 7777, UDP 7778 and (where applicable) UDP 27015 opened and forwarded; TCP 27020 restricted if RCON is enabled.
- Unique names and ports for additional instances.
- Passwords protected from public logs and configuration exposure.
- External client connection tested before adding maps or a cluster.
- Scheduled updates, restarts, backups and health monitoring enabled.
With those controls in place, you can host ASA on Linux reliably despite the absence of a native server binary. The compatibility layer is the unavoidable part; the choice between AASM, Docker and manual services determines how much of the surrounding administration you automate.
