How to Run an FFmpeg YouTube Stream from an AWS Lightsail VPS

A practical guide to sending an FFmpeg stream from an AWS Lightsail Linux VPS to YouTube Live, including secure ingest, encoder settings, and pre-event checks.

You can run FFmpeg on an AWS Lightsail Linux instance to send a live video feed to YouTube: create the VPS, install and verify an FFmpeg build for your chosen operating system, then send its output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it, match encoder settings to YouTube’s current guidance, and test the whole path before relying on it.

What this setup does—and what it does not

FFmpeg runs on the Lightsail instance and pushes an encoded video-and-audio stream outbound to YouTube. The Lightsail firewall does not need an inbound RTMP listener for this arrangement: AWS says outbound traffic is allowed by default, while its firewall rules control inbound public-IP traffic. See AWS Lightsail firewall documentation.

This is a self-managed server workflow. You are responsible for installing and checking FFmpeg, supplying a valid video source, protecting the stream key, and monitoring the process and YouTube stream health. The available evidence does not establish a particular Lightsail plan’s sustained encoding capacity, the cost of running continuously, or a ready-to-copy command that works across Linux distributions and FFmpeg builds.

1. Create and access a Linux Lightsail instance

  1. In the AWS Lightsail console, create an instance. Choose a Linux/Unix image, region, and instance plan. AWS lists Ubuntu and Debian among the supported distributions; see Lightsail instance information and AWS’s instance-creation guide.
  2. Connect using Lightsail’s browser-based SSH or a standard SSH client. Restrict inbound SSH access to your source address where practical. Lightsail manages IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules independently, so review both if you use both address families.
  3. Decide whether you need a stable public address. Lightsail’s default public IPv4 may change after stopping and restarting an instance. Attach a static IPv4 if external references to the server must remain stable through that lifecycle. It is not required for the outbound YouTube stream. See AWS’s static IP guide.
  4. Choose capacity based on the video resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether FFmpeg must encode or can copy already encoded streams. Measure the actual workload on the instance before depending on it; YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not demonstrate that a particular VPS can encode at that rate.

2. Install and verify FFmpeg for the selected image

Use the package manager and repositories for the Linux distribution and release you chose. Package names, versions, encoders, and protocol support can differ, so do not assume a generic install command or binary will provide every capability your stream needs.

Before configuring the live output, check that the installed FFmpeg binary provides the input handling required by your source, the intended video and audio encoders, and RTMP or RTMPS protocol support. In particular, verify RTMPS support before using YouTube’s secure endpoint. If the build lacks it, select a suitable build or use an alternative only after verifying its security and compatibility; do not label an unencrypted connection as encrypted.

3. Create a YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream into your FFmpeg output configuration. Use the exact current values shown there rather than guessing an endpoint path.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit it to source control, expose it in public logs, or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in the live-stream settings. YouTube explains stream management in Manage live stream settings.

4. Choose compatible video, audio, and transport settings

Codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate

YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, with AAC or MP3 audio. For broad compatibility, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical starting choice, but select settings that match your source and the encoding capacity you have measured. Use the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.

For H.264, YouTube Help’s current table, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee of a Lightsail instance’s encoding performance. The table is resolution- and frame-rate-specific and includes different recommendations for other codecs; do not apply one figure to every stream.

Rate control, keyframes, and audio

  • Use constant bitrate (CBR), which YouTube recommends for encoder output.
  • Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Use AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps audio bitrate in its advanced settings.
  • Keep frame rate at or below 60 fps and ensure the chosen bitrate corresponds to the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current table.

These are platform settings, not a promise that a given server can sustain a particular encode. If the instance cannot encode reliably, reduce the output profile or use a source and workflow that avoids unnecessary re-encoding.

Prefer RTMPS when the FFmpeg build supports it

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which protects the RTMP connection with TLS/SSL. As YouTube puts it, “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and verify that your installed FFmpeg can connect to it. Read YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

5. Start the process and validate the stream before an event

Once you have verified the source, FFmpeg build, output settings, Live Control Room URL, and stream key, start FFmpeg from the Lightsail instance using a command appropriate to that exact setup. The correct command depends on the input format and the installed build; a single universal copy-and-paste command is not established here.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the current server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm outbound connectivity, and verify that the installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen RTMP or RTMPS protocol.
  • RTMPS connection fails: Confirm that RTMPS support is present in the FFmpeg build and that you used the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube. If you switch transport, verify what protection the alternate connection provides rather than assuming it remains encrypted.
  • Video or audio is missing: Check whether the input contains the expected streams and whether your selected encoders and output mapping match them. Confirm the preview and health information in Live Control Room.
  • Stream health reports quality issues: Compare codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s current table and recommendations. Then check whether the Lightsail instance can sustain the workload; lower the profile if needed.
  • The server address changed after a restart: The default public IPv4 can change after stop/start. Attach a static IPv4 if a stable address is needed for external access; the YouTube outbound push itself does not require one.
  • The stream key may have leaked: Reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the FFmpeg configuration with the replacement. Keep the new key out of source control and public logs.

Costs and operational trade-offs

A Lightsail instance is the cloud server in this design, but the reviewed AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish the current price for a specific instance, a suitable plan for continuous encoding, or the total cost of a 24/7 stream. Check current Lightsail pricing for your region and plan, and account for the workload you actually run. A static IP is a separate choice for address stability, not a requirement for YouTube ingest.

This method offers control over FFmpeg and the server environment, but it also leaves installation, compatibility checks, key security, process management, capacity testing, and monitoring to you. For gaming broadcasts, remember that a technically healthy encoder does not establish that your footage, game audio, or other material is cleared for streaming: check rights and YouTube’s applicable rules before broadcasting.
