How to Run an OBS Playlist of Coaching Institute Demo Classes on YouTube Live

Use OBS’s VLC Video Source to play coaching demo classes in order on YouTube Live. This guide covers playlist settings, YouTube setup, testing, network health, and fixes.

For a sequence of prerecorded coaching classes, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video Source: install VLC, add the approved video files in the intended order, leave Shuffle off, and turn on Loop Playlist only if the program should repeat. Connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, then test the complete sequence in the Live Control Room before going public.

Before you build the stream

Confirm channel eligibility and permissions

  • YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current requirements for your channel and location before scheduling. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
  • Get authorization to broadcast the specific recordings. Confirm that permission covers the classes, instructors, slides, music, and any other material included. Possessing a recording—or being the institute that arranged the class—does not by itself establish permission for every contributor’s material. Applicable legal requirements depend on the content and jurisdiction.

Prepare the class files and schedule

  1. Put the approved videos in a clearly named folder and decide their exact order.
  2. Play each file locally to check that it opens and its audio is audible.
  3. Write a run sheet with the opening, class sequence, any breaks, and the intended ending. Decide whether viewers should see a title or holding scene before the first class.

Choose the right OBS source

OBS source Best for Key controls and requirements
VLC Video Source A playlist of multiple local video files Supports playlist order, Loop Playlist, and Shuffle Playlist. Requires VLC installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Media Source One video file at a time, such as a single class, title card, or break screen Supports playback controls such as looping and restarting. Available in OBS for Windows, macOS, and Linux, according to OBS documentation.

OBS describes the VLC source’s distinction this way: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” See the OBS Project Media Sources guide and its sources guide.

Build the playlist and scenes in OBS

  1. Install VLC with the same architecture as OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS if the VLC Video Source is not available after installation.
  2. Create the scenes. In the Scenes panel, add an opening/title scene, a class-playlist scene, and an ending or holding scene. Keeping the playlist off the opening scene helps prevent a class from appearing before you intend to start. OBS scenes can combine sources and use transitions such as Fade and Cut. See OBS Project: Scenes and Sources.
  3. Add the playlist source. Select the class-playlist scene, add a VLC Video Source, and add the local class files in the run-sheet order. Check the list carefully before the event.
  4. Set playback behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist disabled for a planned curriculum sequence. Enable Loop Playlist for an unattended repeating schedule; leave it off when the event should play through once. Check the source’s visibility behavior so playback behaves as intended when the scene is not visible. OBS documents the VLC playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.
  5. Add titles or breaks if needed. Use a separate scene with a Media Source for a single title or break video, or use text and other scene sources. Keep transitions simple—Fade or Cut is sufficient for a straightforward class stream.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling ahead can create a watch page viewers can find in advance.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s stream settings. Use YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the exact interface and connection options: YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it; reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
  4. Use YouTube’s recommended secure ingest option, RTMPS, where available. For resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and related encoder settings, consult YouTube’s current encoder settings rather than copying a bitrate without considering your output and connection.

Test the complete program before going public

  1. Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting the public event.
  2. Verify the watch page and event visibility from a viewer’s perspective.
  3. Play through the playlist transitions, confirm the next class starts when expected, and listen for clear audio throughout.
  4. Check that the opening and ending scenes appear at the right times and that the playlist repeats—or stops—according to your plan.
  5. Monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s advice is to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube live streaming tips for computer.

Set bitrate and protect the connection

The appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the output you choose and the upload connection available to the encoder computer. Check YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, test your actual setup, and watch the Live Control Room’s health indicators. Your available upload capacity needs to sustain the selected stream bitrate with headroom; a network disruption can interrupt the stream.

  • Prefer the most reliable connection available. If Wi-Fi is unstable and both your computer and router support it, Ethernet is an optional troubleshooting choice—not a requirement or guaranteed speed upgrade.
  • Avoid treating a speed-test result as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming; monitor the connection and stream health during the test and event.
  • If upload capacity is insufficient, lower the encoder’s output settings using YouTube’s current recommendations and test again before the scheduled broadcast.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause What to check
VLC Video Source is missing VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS and check the source list again.
Classes play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly Files were added in the wrong order, Shuffle is enabled, or Loop Playlist is set differently than intended. Compare the playlist against the run sheet, disable Shuffle for a fixed sequence, and set Loop Playlist to match the event plan.
A class has no audible audio The file’s audio may be missing or too quiet, or the source/output may not be routed as expected. Play the file locally, then test the OBS scene and YouTube preview with audio before going live.
YouTube does not show a usable preview The encoder may not be connected with the correct stream URL/key, or the channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements. Recheck the Live Control Room credentials and channel status, then consult YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Stream health drops or the broadcast disconnects Upload bandwidth may be insufficient or the network may be unstable. Check the chosen bitrate against YouTube’s current settings, leave bandwidth headroom, and test a more reliable connection; try Ethernet only if it addresses an actual Wi-Fi problem.
A class appears before the planned start The playlist source is visible in the opening scene or starts when the scene is not expected to. Keep the playlist in its own scene, verify the source’s visibility behavior, and test the opening-to-playlist transition before the event.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you need the approved recordings to keep looping on YouTube without leaving an OBS computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the videos, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; each slot streams uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, and start your free first day.
