To stream a prerecorded night-forest video continuously from Linux, loop the input with FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1, publish it at real-time speed with -re, and send the output to your platform’s live ingest endpoint. For a YouTube stream, the example below uses H.264 at 720p30, YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate for that format, AAC audio, and a two-second keyframe interval. The loop handles the end of the file; it does not keep FFmpeg, Linux, the network, or YouTube online by itself.
Prepare the video, audio, and YouTube stream
Check the source file and rights
Use a video file that FFmpeg can read and that you have the right to stream. Check that the picture and audio play correctly, including at the point where the file will loop back to its beginning. A hard cut, silence, or sudden change in ambience can be noticeable on a 24/7 channel. YouTube’s guidance calls for testing with representative movement and audio before going live; its live-stream setup and encoding guidance is at YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Permission to use a recording is separate from whether it is technically suitable for streaming. Do not assume that a nature recording, music, sound effect, or video found online is free to rebroadcast. Review the license for both the audio and visuals, and retain evidence of permission. YouTube may apply copyright rules to live content as well as uploads; using a long loop does not make unlicensed material permissible.
Create a live event and copy its ingest details
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder or streaming-software workflow. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that event. The key is a credential: do not publish it in a command screenshot, public script, or repository. The command below uses placeholders because the actual ingest host and stream key are supplied by YouTube, and can differ by destination or setup.

Run a looping FFmpeg stream
Install FFmpeg and confirm it is available
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your Linux distribution, then check that the executable is on your path:
ffmpeg -version
The exact installation command varies by distribution and repository; consult that distribution’s current package documentation rather than assuming one package command applies to every Linux system.

Replace the placeholder URL with the full RTMPS publishing URL and stream key copied from YouTube Studio. Keep the URL quoted, because the key may contain characters interpreted by the shell.

Choose settings for the stream quality you need
Resolution and bitrate
The sample is configured for 720p30, but it does not include an explicit scaling filter. If your source is not already 720p, set the output dimensions deliberately, for example by adding -vf scale=1280:720 before the video codec options. Scaling upward does not add detail. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; the appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current table before changing output settings.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Plan for upload capacity above the video bitrate so audio and network variation have room. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The sample’s 8 Mbps target and 60-frame GOP match those recommendations for 720p30. If changing frame rate, resolution, or codec, adjust the keyframe and bitrate settings to suit rather than copying the values blindly.
Audio and ambience continuity
The sample encodes audio as stereo-compatible AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed audio guidance for stereo AAC or MP3. Check the source’s channel layout and listen to the loop boundary. If the source contains only mono audio or has a gap at the end, encoding settings will not repair the underlying content.

Keep the stream running and detect failures
Understand what looping does—and does not do
Infinite input looping only addresses the end of the media file. It does not restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a failed network connection, keep the Linux host powered, or guarantee that YouTube continues accepting the stream. FFmpeg documents an output FIFO configuration that can retry after temporary output failures, but retries are not a substitute for process supervision or monitoring.
Use a supervisor and observable logs
For a long-running Linux setup, run FFmpeg as a managed service rather than relying on an open terminal. A systemd service can start it at boot and restart the process after an unexpected exit. Configure logs so you can inspect FFmpeg errors, and monitor both the process and YouTube Studio’s stream-health status. Set an alert for a stopped process or missing output if the channel must be checked promptly. Restart behavior cannot fix a permanently bad key, unavailable source file, full disk, or sustained upload failure.

YouTube recommends testing before the stream and checking upload bitrate and stream health while it is live. Run a short test using the actual file, audio, output settings, and ingest path before leaving it unattended.
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg exits immediately or cannot open the input
- Likely cause: the filename or path is wrong, the process lacks file permissions, or the media format cannot be read by the installed build.
- Fix: use an absolute input path, check file permissions, and inspect FFmpeg’s startup output for the specific demuxer or decoder error.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Likely cause: the ingest URL or key is incorrect, the event is not set up to receive the encoder, or the connection cannot reach the endpoint.
- Fix: copy the current endpoint and key from the correct YouTube live event, keep the full URL intact, and check FFmpeg’s connection errors and YouTube Studio’s status.
Stream health reports bitrate or keyframe problems
- Likely cause: output bitrate, frame rate, or keyframe interval does not match the chosen resolution and codec, or the upload link cannot sustain the stream.
- Fix: use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the exact output format, preserve a two-second keyframe interval where possible, and test upload capacity with margin for audio and network variation.
Audio is missing, clipped, or breaks at the loop point
- Likely cause: the source has an unexpected audio layout, an encoding issue, or an audible discontinuity at its end.
- Fix: inspect the input streams and listen to the entire file, especially the loop boundary; resolve the source issue before leaving the loop unattended.
The stream stops after running for a while
- Likely cause: FFmpeg exited, the host slept or lost power, the network failed, or the destination ended or rejected the stream.
- Fix: inspect service logs and YouTube Studio, configure a supervisor restart for process exits, prevent host sleep, and investigate the underlying network or destination error. Restart loops alone can repeatedly reproduce the same failure.
Or let it run in the cloud
