Run multiple Elasticsearch deployments on one VPS by choosing between isolated standalone containers and nodes in one cluster. Standalone instances require unique service names, host ports and data volumes; a cluster requires unique node names, a shared cluster name, discovery seed hosts and one-time bootstrap settings. In both designs, keep data persistent, constrain memory, protect the HTTP and transport interfaces, and prepare the VPS kernel and file-descriptor limits before starting containers.

First decide what “multiple instances” means

The phrase describes two different architectures. Select the one that matches the failure and isolation behavior you need; the Docker files, discovery settings and network design are not interchangeable.

Architecture Purpose Discovery Networking Failure behavior Resource cost
Independent instances Separate applications, tenants or environments such as production and staging discovery.type=single-node in each deliberately standalone container Distinct host HTTP ports; optionally separate Docker networks One instance can fail without directly stopping the others Each container runs its own JVM and consumes memory, file descriptors and storage
One multi-node cluster Node redundancy, shard distribution and a shared dataset Shared cluster name, discovery seed hosts and initial master bootstrap settings Private transport networking between nodes; publish HTTP only to required clients Work can be redistributed only when enough eligible nodes remain and discovery is correctly configured Substantially heavier on a small VPS because every node is another JVM

Do not combine these models. A standalone container is not a one-node member of a future cluster: discovery.type=single-node disables the normal multi-node discovery process. Conversely, cluster nodes must not use that setting.

Plan names, ports and storage before writing Compose

Make a small inventory first. For standalone deployments, assign a service name, host HTTP port and volume to each application or environment. For example, production can use es-prod, host port 9200 and es-prod-data, while staging uses es-staging, 9201 and es-staging-data. The container-side HTTP port remains 9200 in both cases.

For a cluster, assign a unique node.name and volume to every node, then choose one cluster name and a private network shared by the nodes. Record which HTTP endpoint a reverse proxy or application should use. This simple map prevents the most common collisions: duplicate service names, duplicate published ports and two containers writing to one data path.

Compose volume names are tied to the project name. Renaming a directory or starting the same file with a different project name can create a new, empty named volume. Record the actual volume names and inspect them before using cleanup commands such as docker compose down -v; removing a volume deletes the persisted data it contains.

Prepare the VPS before installing Elasticsearch

Budget memory for every process

Count the JVM and operating-system overhead for every Elasticsearch container, then add Docker, a reverse proxy, monitoring and the application workload. Automatic JVM heap sizing assumes Elasticsearch is the only resource-intensive application on the host; that assumption is unsafe on a shared or small VPS. Apply explicit Compose memory limits and watch RAM, swap activity and disk usage after deployment.

No universal “memory per node” number is established here. The correct limit depends on your Elasticsearch version, mappings, shard count, query load and the other services on the VPS. Leave headroom for the operating system and filesystem cache rather than assigning all host RAM to containers.

Set kernel and descriptor limits

  • Raise the Linux open-file limit to at least 65,535, as required by Elasticsearch system guidance.
  • Apply the Elasticsearch-required kernel settings on the VPS host, including vm.max_map_count, before starting the containers.
  • Use persistent SSD-backed storage for data and keep free space available for segments, merges, logs and snapshots.
  • Confirm that the Docker daemon and your service manager will retain the limit after a reboot; changing a shell limit alone may not affect containers.

Install and pin the software

Install Docker Engine and the Compose plugin using your VPS distribution’s supported packages. Pin an Elasticsearch image tag in an .env file instead of silently tracking a moving tag. Keep the image version consistent across nodes in one cluster and plan upgrades deliberately.

Create a protected project directory

Store the Compose file and an environment file in a directory readable only by administrators. Put passwords and certificate material in protected environment variables or a secrets mechanism rather than committing them to source control. The examples below use variable names so credentials are not embedded in YAML.

Option A: run isolated standalone instances

Use one Compose service for each application or environment. Every service needs a unique service or container name, a unique host-side HTTP port and a separate persistent data volume. The internal Elasticsearch HTTP port can remain 9200 in every container; only the host mapping changes.

volumes:
  es-prod-data:
  es-staging-data:

The 2g values are examples of explicit limits, not a universal sizing recommendation. Set limits that fit the combined VPS budget and your workload. Add another service by repeating the pattern with a new name, host port and volume.

Why the port mapping works

Inside each container Elasticsearch listens on its normal HTTP port. The host exposes production at 127.0.0.1:9200 and staging at 127.0.0.1:9201. Binding to loopback keeps both endpoints off the public interface; clients can reach them through a reverse proxy, VPN or SSH tunnel. If a service must be reachable from another private host, bind to the VPS private interface and restrict the firewall to that network.

Isolate networks when required

Compose creates a project network by default. For stronger separation, define a different Docker network for each independent deployment and attach only the services that need to communicate with it. Never reuse a data directory between instances, even when their mappings and versions appear identical.

Option B: build one multi-node cluster

A cluster shares indices across nodes, so its services must discover one another over a private network. Give each service a unique node.name and data volume, set one cluster.name, list Compose service names in discovery.seed_hosts, and configure the initial master nodes only for the first bootstrap.

services:
  es01:
    image: docker.elastic.co/elasticsearch/elasticsearch:${STACK_VERSION}
    environment:
      - node.name=es01
      - cluster.name=game-search
      - discovery.seed_hosts=es02,es03
      - cluster.initial_master_nodes=es01,es02,es03
      - bootstrap.memory_lock=true
      - xpack.security.enabled=true
      - ELASTIC_PASSWORD=${ELASTIC_PASSWORD}
    mem_limit: 2g
    networks: [esnet]
    volumes:
      - esdata01:/usr/share/elasticsearch/data

  es02:
    image: docker.elastic.co/elasticsearch/elasticsearch:${STACK_VERSION}
    environment:
      - node.name=es02
      - cluster.name=game-search
      - discovery.seed_hosts=es01,es03
      - cluster.initial_master_nodes=es01,es02,es03
      - bootstrap.memory_lock=true
      - xpack.security.enabled=true
      - ELASTIC_PASSWORD=${ELASTIC_PASSWORD}
    mem_limit: 2g
    networks: [esnet]
    volumes:
      - esdata02:/usr/share/elasticsearch/data

  es03:
    image: docker.elastic.co/elasticsearch/elasticsearch:${STACK_VERSION}
    environment:
      - node.name=es03
      - cluster.name=game-search
      - discovery.seed_hosts=es01,es02
      - cluster.initial_master_nodes=es01,es02,es03
      - bootstrap.memory_lock=true
      - xpack.security.enabled=true
      - ELASTIC_PASSWORD=${ELASTIC_PASSWORD}
    mem_limit: 2g
    networks: [esnet]
    volumes:
      - esdata03:/usr/share/elasticsearch/data

networks:
  esnet:
    driver: bridge

volumes:
  esdata01:
  esdata02:
  esdata03:

This is a structural example. The official Compose pattern also enables HTTP TLS and transport TLS, configures certificate authorities and uses memory limits. Reproduce that security approach with your own certificates and securely managed passwords before exposing a cluster to clients.

Bootstrap settings are not routine discovery settings

cluster.initial_master_nodes is for the first formation of a brand-new cluster. After the cluster has bootstrapped, do not keep reusing that list during ordinary restarts or when attaching nodes to an existing cluster. Preserve each node’s data volume; deleting it creates a new node identity and can lead to accidental re-bootstrap or data loss.

Keep transport traffic private

Cluster nodes communicate over the Docker network. Do not publish transport ports to the public internet just to make discovery work. Compose service names resolve on the private network, so es01, es02 and es03 can be seed hosts without public DNS. Publish an HTTP port only for a client or reverse proxy that genuinely needs it.

Understand what discovery does

discovery.seed_hosts tells a new node where to find possible cluster members; it is not a list of public client URLs. Every listed service must resolve on the shared Docker network and accept private transport traffic. The cluster name must match on every node, while node names must remain unique. A node that answers HTTP but cannot contact its peers is not a successfully joined cluster.

Security and exposure rules

  • Enable xpack.security.enabled=true for internet-reachable deployments.
  • Use HTTP TLS for client connections and transport TLS between cluster nodes; the official multi-node Compose approach demonstrates both.
  • Keep Elasticsearch bound to loopback or a private interface where possible. Expose a reverse proxy or VPN instead of a raw public Elasticsearch port.
  • Restrict firewall rules to known client addresses and require authentication even on a private network.
  • Store credentials and private keys outside the Compose file when possible, protect file permissions, and replace all example passwords and certificates.
  • Do not expose the transport interface publicly. It is for node communication, not browser or application access.

The basic Docker image example is intended for development and uses discovery.type=single-node. Treat that as a deliberate standalone choice, not as a secure production template. For a public VPS, authentication, certificates, firewall policy and a private transport network should be decided before DNS or application traffic is pointed at Elasticsearch.

Deploy in a controlled sequence

  1. Choose the architecture. Decide whether applications need independent data and failure domains or one shared cluster with shard distribution.
  2. Create the project. Make a dedicated directory, write the Compose file and create an .env file containing a pinned STACK_VERSION and secrets.
  3. Prepare the host. Apply kernel settings, raise open-file limits to at least 65,535, verify disk capacity and set firewall rules.
  4. Validate Compose. Run docker compose config. This catches YAML errors and missing variable interpolation before containers start.
  5. Start services. Run docker compose up -d.
  6. Check container state. Run docker compose ps, then inspect failures with docker compose logs --tail=200 <service>.
  7. Test HTTP access. Query each endpoint with authentication and HTTPS when enabled. For loopback bindings, run the request on the VPS or through your tunnel; do not open a firewall rule merely for testing.
  8. Verify a cluster. Query _cluster/health and confirm that every expected node joined. A responding HTTP endpoint alone does not prove that discovery succeeded.
  9. Test persistence. Restart one service, query it again and confirm that its indices remain. For a cluster, restart nodes one at a time and watch health before proceeding.

Validate the two designs after startup

Standalone checks

  • Each service has a distinct name in docker compose ps.
  • Each host port reaches only its intended container: 9200, 9201 and so on.
  • Each service reports its own cluster identity and uses its own data volume.
  • Stopping one container does not stop or alter the other application’s indices.

Cluster checks

  • All nodes report the same cluster.name.
  • Every node.name is unique and every data volume belongs to exactly one node.
  • Seed hosts resolve over the private Docker network.
  • The cluster health response shows the expected node count and a healthy shard allocation after recovery.
  • Transport connections remain private and TLS-protected; only required HTTP access is published.

Backups, upgrades and ongoing operations

Back up outside the containers

A named Docker volume is persistence, not a backup. Keep snapshots or another Elasticsearch-supported backup copy outside the VPS or on storage that survives a host failure. Test restoration, including credentials, certificates, index templates and lifecycle policies. Never treat a container filesystem as the only copy of production data.

Upgrade deliberately

Pin the image tag, read the compatibility requirements for the target version, back up first and upgrade one planned change at a time. In a cluster, preserve node data and follow a rolling procedure appropriate to the version; in independent deployments, upgrade each service separately so a staging failure does not take production offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor the host as well as Elasticsearch

Watch container memory limits, JVM pressure, swap, disk capacity, file-descriptor usage, restart counts and cluster health. A VPS can become unstable before Elasticsearch reports an application-level error if several JVMs compete for the same RAM or the filesystem fills during segment merges.

Document recovery details

Keep a record of the pinned image version, Compose project name, volume names, port assignments, certificates, passwords or secret locations, firewall rules and bootstrap history. This documentation makes it possible to distinguish a stopped container from a missing volume and prevents an administrator from accidentally initializing a second cluster over an existing data set.

Troubleshooting common failures

“Address already in use”

Two services are attempting the same host port. Keep the internal port at 9200, change the host side of the mapping, and confirm that no old container or reverse proxy owns the selected port.

Containers restart or are killed for memory

Inspect docker compose ps and logs, then compare the sum of Compose limits with host RAM. Reduce the number of JVMs, lower limits only with workload testing, move other services, or use a larger VPS. Do not solve sustained pressure by relying on swap.

Cluster nodes never join

Check that service names in discovery.seed_hosts resolve on the shared Docker network, that all nodes use the same cluster name and compatible image version, and that transport traffic is not blocked. Ensure the nodes are not configured with discovery.type=single-node.

Data disappears after a rebuild

The data path was not mounted persistently, the wrong volume was attached, or a new project name created a different Compose volume. Verify that every service mounts /usr/share/elasticsearch/data and record the exact volume names before running destructive cleanup commands.

HTTP works but clients cannot connect remotely

A loopback binding intentionally accepts traffic only on the VPS. Use the configured reverse proxy, VPN or SSH tunnel, or bind to a private interface and update firewall rules. Do not expose the endpoint publicly without authentication, TLS and restrictive network controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One node returns a different cluster identity

Inspect its cluster.name, data volume and environment interpolation. A stale volume can preserve an old node identity, while an altered project name can attach a fresh volume. Stop before deleting anything, compare the volume mapping with the intended Compose project, and restore from a known snapshot if the wrong cluster was initialized.

Choosing the safer layout for a small VPS

Use independent instances when isolation between applications or environments matters more than shared availability. Use a cluster only when you can fund the additional JVM, disk, descriptor and operational overhead and have a real need for node redundancy or shard distribution. Whichever layout you select, unique names, ports and volumes prevent accidental collisions; private networking, TLS, explicit memory limits, host preparation and tested backups determine whether the deployment remains reliable after the first restart or failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run several standalone Elasticsearch containers on one VPS?

Yes. Give every service a unique name, host-side HTTP port and persistent volume. Each container can keep Elasticsearch’s internal port at 9200 and use discovery.type=single-node when it is intentionally independent.

How is a multi-node cluster different from separate instances?

Separate instances hold independent data and fail independently. Cluster nodes share one cluster name and dataset, discover one another through seed hosts, and can distribute shards or recover work when enough eligible nodes remain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can two Elasticsearch containers share one data directory?

No. Mount /usr/share/elasticsearch/data from a separate named volume or host directory for each instance or node. Sharing a path risks corruption and destroys the isolation the layout is meant to provide.

Do I need to publish the transport port?

No. Keep transport traffic on the private Docker network or private VPS interface. Publish only the HTTP endpoint required by an application or reverse proxy, and never expose transport publicly just to make discovery work.

When should cluster.initial_master_nodes be removed?

Use it only while a brand-new cluster forms. After bootstrap, do not keep reusing the initial list for normal restarts or when adding nodes; preserve the existing data volumes and follow the version-appropriate joining procedure.

How much memory does each container need?

There is no universal value. Budget for every JVM plus the operating system, Docker, proxy, monitoring and applications. Set explicit Compose limits, leave filesystem-cache headroom and monitor swap and memory pressure rather than assigning all VPS RAM to Elasticsearch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does localhost work but a remote client fail?

A mapping such as 127.0.0.1:9200:9200 intentionally accepts connections only on the VPS. Use a reverse proxy, VPN or SSH tunnel, or bind to a private interface with restrictive firewall rules. Add authentication and TLS before any public exposure.

Is a Docker volume also a backup?

No. It preserves data across container replacement but not necessarily across VPS loss. Keep Elasticsearch-supported snapshots or another backup copy outside the host and test restoration of data and security configuration.

The Bottom Line

Choose standalone containers for isolation or a multi-node cluster for shared data and node redundancy. Give every container or node unique names, ports and persistent volumes; keep discovery and transport private; pin versions; limit memory; raise the 65,535 file-descriptor limit; enable authentication and TLS; and verify backups and recovery before treating the VPS as production-ready.
