You can also press Ctrl+Enter to execute it. Before doing anything that changes data, export a database backup, verify the table prefix in wp-config.php, and check every table named by the statement.

The database selection is the most important step. A valid query sent to the wrong database can return an empty result or affect another site on the same account. phpMyAdmin reports query results and errors on the following page, so read that response rather than assuming that a click succeeded.

What phpMyAdmin does for a WordPress site
phpMyAdmin is a browser-based interface for working directly with a MySQL-compatible database. The WordPress Developer Handbook describes it as useful for table maintenance, backups, and direct edits when WordPress itself is not working. That direct access is powerful because it bypasses the WordPress dashboard and plugins; it is also why a typo or an incorrect database choice deserves more care than a normal dashboard setting.
The phpMyAdmin introduction states that the application can run, edit, and bookmark SQL statements, including batches of queries. For a one-off inspection, the SQL page is usually enough. For repeated maintenance, a saved or bookmarked statement can reduce retyping, but it does not remove the need to verify the target database each time.

Prepare before opening the SQL editor
Confirm that you have the right access
Start in the hosting control panel that manages the site. Providers use different names and layouts for the phpMyAdmin link, so the path may not look identical from one host to another. Open the phpMyAdmin instance associated with the WordPress installation you intend to inspect.
Export a backup first
Use phpMyAdmin’s database export function before running a statement that could alter or remove data. Keep the exported file somewhere you can retrieve it independently of the hosting account. A backup is especially important when you are working outside the WordPress dashboard, because a database mistake can prevent the dashboard from loading.
Find the actual table prefix
Do not assume that WordPress tables begin with wp_. The prefix can be changed during installation or later, and it is recorded in wp-config.php. Check the value there, then use that exact prefix in every table name. For example, a site using site7_ will have a table such as site7_posts, not wp_posts.
- Have the correct phpMyAdmin login and hosting account open.
- Export the intended database before changing it.
- Read the table-prefix value in
wp-config.php. - Write down the exact database name you expect to see in phpMyAdmin.
Open the WordPress database and SQL tab
- Open phpMyAdmin from the hosting control panel.
- In the left-hand column, select the database used by the WordPress installation. Do not open the SQL editor before selecting a database.
- Choose the SQL tab.
- Look above the SQL text area and confirm that the displayed database name is the one you selected. If the name is wrong, return to the left column and choose the correct database before entering a query.
- Enter or paste the SQL statement into the editor.
- Click Go, or press
Ctrl+Enter. phpMyAdmin opens another page showing the returned rows or an error message.
This sequence matters because the SQL tab operates in the context of the selected database. Selecting a table instead of the database, or selecting a neighboring site’s database, changes where an otherwise valid statement is evaluated.

Run a safe first query
Use a read query to inspect content
A SELECT statement reads data without asking phpMyAdmin to change it. The following example lists published posts in reverse publication order:
SELECT * FROM wp_posts WHERE post_status = 'publish' ORDER BY post_date DESC;Replace wp_ with the prefix from your own wp-config.php before running it. If your prefix is site7_, the table reference becomes site7_posts. The example is useful for confirming that you selected the right database and that the expected WordPress posts table exists.

Check the statement before execution
- Compare every table name with the tables shown for the selected database.
- Confirm that the prefix is identical, including underscores and capitalization where applicable.
- Read the filtering condition and sort order, especially when you copied the query from another site.
- Make sure the database name displayed above the editor still matches the site you intend to inspect.
Read the response page
After Go or Ctrl+Enter, phpMyAdmin displays the results or an error on the next page. A result grid lets you inspect the returned rows. An error response means the statement was not accepted as written; use the message to identify the table, column, syntax, or permission issue, then correct the query and run it again only after confirming the database context.

Use parameters instead of rewriting values
From phpMyAdmin version 4.5, the SQL page accepts parameters written with a colon prefix. When you tick Bind parameters, phpMyAdmin displays input fields for those parameters. This lets you keep the statement structure fixed while supplying a value at execution time.
For example, a parameterized inspection query can use a status value instead of embedding it directly:
SELECT * FROM site7_posts WHERE post_status = :status ORDER BY post_date DESC;With Bind parameters enabled, enter publish for status and execute the query. The table prefix in this example is illustrative; replace it with the prefix verified in your configuration file. Parameter support is documented for the SQL page, but the exact controls can vary with the phpMyAdmin version supplied by your host.
Batch queries, editing, and bookmarks
phpMyAdmin’s own introduction says it can execute batch queries, edit SQL statements, and bookmark statements. A batch is useful when several related read operations need to be run from the same database context. Review every statement in the batch individually before execution: selecting the correct database protects the whole batch, but it cannot correct a wrong table name or an unsafe condition inside one statement.

Bookmarks are convenient for recurring checks, such as a report that you run during maintenance. Treat a bookmark as a saved instruction, not as a safety approval. Reconfirm the database name and table prefix whenever you use it on a different WordPress installation.
Handle statements that can change or remove data
Why destructive commands need a second check
Commands that alter the database require more scrutiny than a read-only SELECT. The WordPress-specific guidance calls out destructive commands such as DROP: check the intended tables before running them. A dropped table can remove an entire category of WordPress data, and the correct recovery path is the backup you exported before starting.

- Confirm the database name above the SQL editor.
- Match each table in the statement to the tables shown under that database.
- Compare the prefix with
wp-config.phprather than relying on the example prefixwp_. - Read the statement from beginning to end and identify every table it could affect.
- Verify that your export completed and that you know where the file is stored.
- Only then click Go or press
Ctrl+Enter.
If the result is not what you intended, stop running additional statements. Preserve the error or result page and use the backup to plan a controlled recovery rather than trying random corrective queries.

An unsafe-operation warning from a web application firewall
A web application firewall can block a legitimate SQL request and show an unsafe operation
warning. The phpMyAdmin FAQ suggests allowing phpMyAdmin scripts in the firewall or disabling the firewall for the phpMyAdmin path. If you take the second option, treat it as a temporary maintenance change: run only the required query, restore the protection immediately, and avoid exposing phpMyAdmin more broadly than necessary.

The query references a table that does not exist
First check the selected database, then check the prefix in wp-config.php. A query copied with wp_ will fail or target the wrong object when the installation uses a custom prefix. Selecting a different database can produce the same symptom, so verify both items before changing the SQL.
The page shows an error after execution
phpMyAdmin reports errors on the page that follows execution. Read the complete message, identify the statement that failed, and correct one issue at a time. Do not assume that a displayed error means every statement in a multi-query batch was harmless; review the batch and the result before retrying.

When to use WordPress code instead
When WordPress is running normally and the operation belongs inside application logic, you can use WordPress’s wpdb class. Its query method executes an SQL query on the WordPress database. That approach keeps the operation in code and can be incorporated into a controlled plugin or maintenance script.
phpMyAdmin remains useful when the dashboard is unavailable, when you need to inspect tables directly, or when a one-time maintenance action does not justify writing application code. Whichever route you choose, the same database name, table-prefix, backup, and destructive-command checks still apply.
End-to-end workflow
- Open the hosting control panel and launch phpMyAdmin.
- Identify the WordPress database and select it in the left column.
- Export that database before any modifying operation.
- Open wp-config.php through your file-management method and record the actual table prefix.
- Return to phpMyAdmin, open SQL, and verify the database name above the editor.
- Start with a read-only statement, such as the published-posts query, using the verified prefix.
- Execute with Go or
Ctrl+Enter; useShift+Enterwhen you need a new line. - Inspect the result or error page before making another change.
- For parameterized statements, enable Bind parameters and supply each colon-prefixed value.
- For any statement that can remove or alter data, repeat the table and backup checks immediately before execution.
- If a firewall blocks the request, apply the phpMyAdmin-specific exception or temporary path change, then restore normal protection.
Version and hosting caveats
The shortcut and parameter details are drawn from phpMyAdmin documentation for version 5.1.4, while the related FAQ material references 5.2.4-dev. The current stable release behavior on October 14, 2026 was not established here. Your hosting provider may supply a different release, disable features, or rename control-panel links, so confirm the labels and available controls in your own phpMyAdmin screen.
The core workflow does not change: choose the correct database, verify its name in the SQL view, use the real WordPress table prefix, back up before changes, and inspect the response page after execution.
